2012 District 7 Pinot Noir, Monterey 750ml 3-Pack

Flavors of black cherry and strawberry are complemented by a touch of vanilla and toast that linger in a long, silky finish. An elegant, balanced offering that is the ultimate food wine. Try it with grilled salmon, roast duck, pork tenderloin or soft-ripened cheeses.

Vineyards: Of all grape varieties, Pinot Noir is the most sensitive to its terroir. We work hard each vintage to get it right in the vineyard so that when the grapes are harvested and arrive at the winery, we can step aside and allow the fruit to speak for itself. The cool temperatures of District 7 present ideal growing conditions for Pinot Noir. Each afternoon, the reliable winds from the Monterey Bay come howling down the valley, keeping our estate vineyards at a moderate temperature.

Winemaking: The delicate Pinot Noir grapes were picked at optimum ripeness. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented in open top fermenters. Over the next 2 - 3 weeks, the firm cap of skins and seeds that bubble up and form on the surface during red fermentation was punched down. The wine was carefully aged in a combination of new and neutral oak, to craft a lush, elegant wine with bright fruit aromas and vivid flavors.

2013 District 7 Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml 3-Pack

Vineyards: The grapes for District 7 Cabernet Sauvignon are grown on our estate vineyard in southern Monterey County. This locale provides a prime environment for growing this classic Bordeaux varietal, with sunshine-filled days followed by the cooling maritime influence of the Monterey Bay in the late afternoon. These conditions allow the grapes to hang on the vine and develop complex flavors and intense varietal character.

Winemaking: The grapes were picked in late October. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented in open-top fermenters. Over the next 2 – 3 weeks, the firm cap of skins and seeds that bubble up and form on the surface during red fermentation was punched down. After a 10-day fermentation in stainless tanks, the wine was aged with a combination of 75% American, 15% French and 10% Eastern European oak to round out and soften the rich, black fruit flavors.

“Quality is never an accident.  It is always the result of intelligent effort.”
John Ruskin – artist, writer, philosopher (1819 – 1900)

To summarize the essence of a company in a one or two sentence mission statement is a daunting task. On the surface, our job at Scheid Vineyards is to supply our winery clients with the grapes they need at an acceptable price and at the highest quality possible. But it goes much deeper than that. For to supply a particular client with particular grapes implies an understanding of the specific wine and style being made and the knowledge of how to custom farm to achieve that profile. Say, a certain Sauvignon Blanc customer produces a grassy, herbaceous style of wine while another client aims for a more floral and fruitier character. Same grape, different approach. That’s where the “intelligent effort” part comes in.

Quality is a term that has been trivialized, used by purveyors from McDonald’s to Verizon to K-Mart. Genuine quality is harder to come by and does not mean simply well-made or acceptable. Real quality is that which is superior. It is the result of thought, analysis, communication, sweat and honest-to-God hard labor, succinctly stated by Mr. Ruskin as “intelligent effort”. True quality is giving each customer no less than exactly what they want and need.

It is never an accident.
