The River Wild

Rhône if you want to.

As muscular, rich, and uninhibited as a first-round NFL draft pick, Rhône-style wines were originally cultivated by the Romans on the rugged slopes of the Rhône river valley. The grapes in these three David Girard wines don't know Marcus Aurelius from Neiman Marcus, but they carry the Rhône banner without breaking a sweat.

The textured, polished 2009 Coda Rouge blend is ready to rumble now. The 2009 Mourvedre, redolent of violets and tea and strawberry leaves, is at your service now or later. And the 2009 Syrah is just starting to flex its smoky, juicy muscles. Even if you've never been anywhere near Lyon or Geneva, these David Girard reds will turn you into a Rhône ranger.

Features

2009 Coda Rouge, El Dorado County Red Blend 750ml

Violets, fresh strawberry, juicy pomegranate seed, wet stones and hints of warm sun on granite. The beautiful textures in this wine mimic the components. Polished tannins of Mourvedre, granitic tannins in Grenache, and layering of Syrah. This is a blend to experience now.

2009 Mourvedre, El Dorado Estate Vineyard 750ml

A beautiful expression of the David Girard estate Mourvedre. This year shines for its perfume aromatics. Violets emerge from this wine that smells like a vineyard at harvest. Tea like herbs come through with hints of strawberry leaves. The palate is filled with velvety tannins and seamless balance. Ahh… fresh plum flesh. Makes you wonder why you would drink anything else. This wine pairs well with earthy flavors to make the fruit explode. Paired with fruit tarts, the essence of herbs come alive with some bacon and lamb like overtones.

2009 Syrah, El Dorado County 750ml

A classic Syrah that is beginning to unfold. Layers of violet, tea leaves, and smoke frame a juicy core with tobacco, black raspberry, and earthiness. Some tar, resin, and black olive juice add interest to the fruit core of this wine.

Vendor Details

David Girard Vineyards

Owner:
David Girard
Founded:
1998
Location:
El Dorado County/Placerville

David Girard remembers looking out at the picturesque landscape rising from the South Fork American River Valley twenty years ago, and seeing beyond its beauty into its great potential. Here in the heart of California’s famed historic Gold Country in the El Dorado Appellation located at 1300 feet elevation, David envisioned a vineyard producing premiere,  estate-grown grapes.

From good earth may come gold, but also great wine. David Girard Vineyards (DGV) was founded by good earth, great vision, and, like the most intrepid of the earliest gold seekers, a high tolerance for risk. Beginning in 1998, David’s first endeavor was growing Merlot grapes, and selling them to Robert Mondavi. While this partnership was successful, his love for French wines drew him down a new path. David joined Vineyard Manager Ron Mansfield in researching and journeying to southern France’s Rhône River Valley. This was the valuable inspiration and information needed to lead David to produce Rhône varietals on our 85-acre estate.

Nearly all DGV wines are crafted with estate-grown, small-lot productions. With each production approximately 5,000 cases, our winemaker is able to focus on the full and unique expression of the Gold Country fruit, highlighting the particular attributes from our climate, soil, and each chosen variety.
