Leon "Cumulus" Brown

Now that basketball season is over, let's look back on the history of the game and remember its greats.

Few remember Leon "Cumulus" Brown, the cloud who started as center for the Boston Celtics through much of the team's first decade. Brown was known for his oppressive defense, court presence, and cotton-like appearance.

"Cumulus" Brown was a feared defender in the post as well as on the perimeter. Opposing players claimed he was nearly impossible to screen, and he would cover the ball mercilessly in both man-to-man and zone defenses. He was named NBA defensive player of the year until he evaporated into the atmosphere in 1957.

However, on April 10, 1952 in a game against the New York Knicks, Brown achieved a feat unparalleled in basketball history: 50 blocks in a single game. Brown was everywhere on the floor that night, literally. He touched nearly every shot put up by a New York player with at least one of his suspended drops of condensation.

Some have disputed the record, as Brown was not a human being at all but a cloud and therefore unbound by the same physical laws. But it stands to this day, even if it is totally made up and only tangentially related to wine in any way.

Cumulus Estate Wines

Owner:
Lion-Nathan
Location:
Orange, Australia

In the early 1980's some astute and dedicated wine pioneers recognized the cool climate and ideal soils of the Orange region. Orange, along with the Central Ranges have become the largest cool climate region in Australia. The area, alongside Mudgee and Cowra, produces twice the amount of wine as the Hunter Valley. The founders of what is now Cumulus were ambitious, planting a massive 1,000 hectares of vineyard and built a 10,000 ton winery with storage capacity for 8 million liters of wine.

Top Comments are discussion forum posts we have deemed worthy of your time. Listen, we get a lot of comments, and most of the time, it's pretty forgettable stuff; but sometimes you rise to the top like butterfat in milk. We don't recommend you base your self-worth on how often we feature your comments, but we don't expressly forbid it either.
