Think Outside The Box

If you're anything like me, you probably haven't had the opportunity to drink wine from a bag since before you went to prison.

I was a different person back then, you know? I was young, angry at the world for reasons that weren't anyone's fault but my own, and too stupid to see it. Hanging out outside convenience stores, passing around three dollar bottles of wine wrapped in brown paper with guys with names like Ponzi and M-Bezzle and Steve, waiting for some sucker to pay me from insider trading tips was no way to live. I see that now.

The more I think about it, that time away in a federal prison was good for me. It was rough, sure. The lack of loofah for my private shower, the wobbly ping-pong table in the rec room, the absolutely atrocious Beef Wellington they'd serve us on Thursday nights, I still nightmare about those things today. It really opened my eyes to what I was doing to myself. I swore to myself that when I got out, I'd never repeat the mistakes that put me in that body pillow-less hell.

Nowadays, I'm living life the way it should be lived. I've got a good job, a budding family, and when my wine comes in a bag, only the Clif Family 1.5L The Climber Pouch will do. Whether it's the fruit-filled palate and decisively juicy finish of the Chardonnay or the lush wonder that is the blackberry jam, plum and black currant flavors of the Cabernet Sauvignon, I'm reminded with each sip that I can continue being a better person than I was before, one that doesn't get caught so easily.

Oops! Would you look at the time? I've got to go meet a client about his "foreclosure rescue!" Thank goodness these Climber pouches are so portable.

Vendor Details

Clif Family Winery

Founded:
1997
Owner:
Kit Crawford and Gary Erickson
Location:
St. Helena, CA
Kit inherited a passion for natural food from her mother and father who instilled in her the value of growing your own food and caring for the natural resources of the land. At Clif Family Farm, Kit has fun creating meals for family and friends from the organic fruits and vegetables that she grows on the Farm. Kit's interest in wine began when she worked at a popular artisan pasta, wine and cheese shop in San Francisco and expanded when she and Gary purchased a home and farm in the Napa Valley. Kit has a passion for animals and raises chickens and turkeys on the farm. Kit plays a very active role in her local and global community. As a St. Helena High School parent, she is very active in fundraising activities for the local community. As President of Clif Bar Family Foundation, she is responsible for the fiscal oversight of the foundation and its programs.

Gary has been cooking and baking since high school under the watchful eyes of his mother and grandmother. He began Kali's Sweets and Savories (named after his grandmother) in 1986 as a small bakery making calzones and gourmet cookies. Kali's went on to become Clif Bar & Company, the leading maker of organic energy food and drinks. Gary's love of food and wine began with his cycling trips through Europe. A day of cycling would inevitably end with a long meal and a great bottle of wine. The European's connection with their food was an inspiration for what would later become Clif Family Winery & Farm. Whether it's cycling in the French & Italian Alps or a mountain bike ride on his Napa Valley property, good food and wine are always part of the adventure. When he's not busy running his two companies, Gary can be found at home, cooking eclectic dishes for his family or playing jazz trumpet.
