Ask any little piggy & they'll tell you Clayhouse is the best.

Once upon a time there were three little pigs.

One pig built his house out of straw.

That went poorly.

One pig built his house out of sticks.

Also not a great outcome.

The third pig built her house out of clay. And not only did she avoid becoming a lupine banquet, she was also incredibly popular and well liked by the rest of the town.

Such is the power of Clayhouse.

End of fable.

Features

Clayhouse Vineyard wines offer the fine varietal character and soft tannins characteristic of Paso Robles, but with restraint (avoiding the high alcohols common in many Paso Robles wines). The grapes for Clayhouse Vineyard wines are sourced from the Middleton Family’s estate Red Cedar Vineyard in the Paso Robles AVA.

2012 Sauvignon Blanc, Red Cedar Vineyard, Central Coast 750ml 2-Pack

The wine is a bright straw in color, with aromas of cut-grass, passion-fruit, pear, and melon. Its flavors are of citrus with some chalky minerality. Firm acidity follows a balanced mouthfeel into a zesty, well-rounded finish.

The mild, even, 2012 growing season produced wines that are well-rounded with expressive fruit flavors. The grapes for this wine went directly to press at the winery. The juice was then coldsettled for two days before racking off the heavy lees prior to fermentation. Ninety-six percent of the wine was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel (49-55 degrees F, to preserve aromatics and keep fermentation rates slow). 4% fermented in neutral French oak to add a viscous mouthfeel and spice complexity. After fermentation, the wine was racked off the heavy lees and aged on the fine lees for three months prior to blending.

2013 Adobe Pink, Paso Robles 750ml 2-Pack

Salmon pink color with aromas of sweet jasmine, strawberries, fresh honey, vanilla and garigue. Flavors of watermelon and ripe strawberries (Syrah), Rainier cherries (Grenache), green apples (tartness), and a touch of dusty spice (Mourvedre). Wine is dry and lively with refreshing summer fruit flavors and a crisp yet delicate sweet fruit laced finish.

Warm and long growing season but relatively mild summer for Paso Robles. Yields were low to average producing an intense concentrated vintage with expressive big fruit flavors and tannins to match.

2012 Adobe White, Paso Robles 750ml 2-Pack

This exotic dry white wine has a bright straw color with aromas of orange blossoms, mandarin zest, jasmine, sweet fennel and honey, with hints of fresh-ground nutmeg. Tropical fruit flavors of mango, cherimoya, and white peach predominate. Firm acidity backs up a rich, balanced mouth-feel. The finished wine is a refreshing summer quaffer with plenty of fruit and spice character.

The blend component varietals were crafted separately before blending. 76% of the fruit was whole cluster pressed. All lots were settled for two days then racked off the gross lees before fermentation. 95% of the wine was fermented cool in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. A small portion (5%) of the total was fermented in neutral French oak barrels, to add viscosity and spice complexity.

Middleton Family Wines

Owner:
Rick Middleton
Location:
Paso Robles & Central Coast, CA

Our family has been working the land since 1898, when we started a lumber business in Aberdeen, on the coast of Washington State. We began with lumber and forestry, and have thoughtfully and gradually expanded our family business to include table grapes, wine grapes, and wine. Today our businesses are at home in Hoquiam (Washington – next door to Aberdeen), Walla Walla (Washington), Delano (California), and Paso Robles (California).

Because we’ve had four generations in the family business, we’re interested in building things that will last, for the fifth, sixth, seventh generations, and beyond.  Our wine business includes three wineries: Cadaretta (Walla Walla Valley and Columbia Valley), Clayhouse (Paso Robles and Central Coast), and Buried Cane (Washington State).

The Clayhouse label and brand celebrate a historic home at our estate vineyard near Paso Robles. That 150-year-old adobe structure – the Clayhouse itself – still reminds us of the time when grapes were first planted in this area. The Clayhouse, which we’ve carefully restored, is really the ideal symbol for our vineyard and winery. After all, like the adobe, our wines are created from the earth, cultivated by hand, and nurtured by family traditions.

For the Middleton family, those traditions and deep passion for agricultural businesses go back more than four generations.

Today, Clayhouse Wines extend that proud family legacy with a selection of exceptional wines, all crafted by hand in a refined, elegant style that reflects the unique character of Paso Robles and the depth of flavor that the Central Coast imparts.
