Training Day

What one person can do, another person can do. But mastering honeysuckle? That doesn't just happen overnight.

Everyone's done it once in their lives. You're out for a drive, you stop in somewhere seedy, it's clear you don't belong... and then, all of a sudden, the jukebox stops and there's honeysuckle all up-front in your face. And if you're not prepared for that, you might not be able to walk away.

That's why it's crucial- crucial! -that you buy a four pack of 2011 Estate Cuveé Blanc with which you can prepare yourself. Set up the first bottle and do a few drills. Marzipan from the left! Floral fruit from the right! Once you've got that, move to the second bottle. Mango surprise! Lychee from above! Hee-ya! Hee-ya! Punch, punch, kick! Now you've mastered the basics!

But don't get cocky yet. Because you've got to face off against that third bottle still. Can you handle the juicy sweetness? Really? Because that voluminous mouthfeel is gonna come hard, and it's not gonna stop until you're under the table. But if you master that, then and only then will you be ready to face bottle four... and the honeysuckle master.

And then, when you've finished the 2011 Estate Cuvee Blanc 4-Pack completely, you'll be powerful enough to take care of any wayward flavors that might come your way.

2011 Estate Cuveé Blanc, Red Cedar Vineyard Paso Robles 750ml 4-Pack

Clayhouse Estate Cuveé Blanc is a Rhone-white blend with plenty of up-front honeysuckle, marzipan and floral fruit aromas, as well as a crisp lime-citrus minerality and mouth-feel contributed by the Grenache Blanc. Fruit flavors are of mango, lychee, and citrus zest, with a hint of dried herbs and a juicy sweet impression. The wine is rich in the mouth, with a voluminous mouthfeel and a warm finish.

The fourth bottling of the Clayhouse Estate Cuveé Blanc comes once again from the estate Red Cedar Vineyard just east of Paso Robles. It’s a Rhone white blend of 70% Grenache Blanc from block 77 and 30% Viognier from block 75.  The Grenache Blanc vines are planted on fine alluvial sandy loam, in the growth-restrictive Arbuckle-San Ysidro soil type and the Viognier grows in calcareous sandstone and shale.

The Grenache Blanc was picked on October 21 and the Viognier on October 7. The goal was to pick at a sugar level that would provide plenty of body and natural acidity without any alcoholic heat. All of the grapes were hand-picked, and SO2 was added to the vineyard bins to prevent oxidation prior to whole cluster pressing (the fruit was not crushed). All of the juice fractions were kept separate, and the hard press was discarded. Cold fermentation for the Grenache Blanc and Viognier took place in mostly stainless steel (5% of the Viognier fermented in new Hungarian oak). The wines were blended after fermentation and stabilization. The finished blend is 70% Grenache Blanc and 30% Viognier. Bottling took place on May 5, 2011.

Middleton Family Wines

Owner:
Rick Middleton
Location:
Paso Robles and Central Coast, CA
Our family has been working the land since 1898, when we started a lumber business in Aberdeen, on the coast of Washington State. We began with lumber and forestry, and have thoughtfully and gradually expanded our family business to include table grapes, wine grapes, and wine. Today our businesses are at home in Hoquiam (Washington – next door to Aberdeen), Walla Walla (Washington), Delano (California), and Paso Robles (California).

Because we’ve had four generations in the family business, we’re interested in building things that will last, for the fifth, sixth, seventh generations, and beyond.  Our wine business includes three wineries: Cadaretta (Walla Walla Valley and Columbia Valley), Clayhouse (Paso Robles and Central Coast), and Buried Cane (Washington State).

The Clayhouse label and brand celebrate a historic home at our estate vineyard near Paso Robles. That 150-year-old adobe structure – the Clayhouse itself – still reminds us of the time when grapes were first planted in this area. The Clayhouse, which we’ve carefully restored, is really the ideal symbol for our vineyard and winery. After all, like the adobe, our wines are created from the earth, cultivated by hand, and nurtured by family traditions.  For the Middleton family, those traditions and deep passion for agricultural businesses go back more than four generations.

Today, Clayhouse Wines extend that proud family legacy with a selection of exceptional wines, all crafted by hand in a refined, elegant style that reflects the unique character of Paso Robles and the depth of flavor that the Central Coast imparts.
