Adobe-licious

The Commodores' first attempt.

Enclosed in this box you will find most of what you asked be returned to you. Here are your books, your Blu-rays, your cheap-o earphones, and that stupid robot vacuum cleaner. The dental floss you insisted I return because “you paid for it” is here. Also, while I’m not entirely certain why it’s so important I give you this specific towel, but here you go. I washed it, though, just to let you know. I hope that didn’t ruin whatever weird thing you’ve got going on with it. No, wait, I hope it did, actually.

Now then, on to the little matter of the Clayhouse wines you wanted back. Mainly, why that won’t be happening.

You see, Brad, I was pretty upset after chasing you and.. Oh, what was her name? Tramp? Hussy? The Collagen Experiment Gone Awry? Whatever. Basically, it wasn’t pleasant getting the two of you out of our bedroom and apartment. It took me a minute to control my thoughts and emotions, particularly the ones that told me I should burn all your stuff immediately.

So, I decided to have a glass of that Clayhouse Estate wine. The luscious flavors had a very calming effect on me as I read through the messages in your “Secret Emails” folder detailing just how long you’d been cheating on me. I nearly spit a whole mouthful of savory wine on the screen when I found the naughty photos you’d been sending her. Also, for your information, “Bradisrad27” is not a very secure password.

It wasn’t until I opened a second bottle of that Clayhouse 3-pack, though, that I finally came to terms with everything. Maybe it was the rich purply hues or the inviting aromas, I don’t know, but I really found myself at peace when I posted those pictures I found to every single social media site I could sign up for.

Let’s just call those Clayhouse Estate bottles an Asshat Tax, shall we, Brad? Think of it as the cost of doing business. But to show you there are truly no hard feelings, I’ve also thrown in the unused portions of the box of feminine hygiene products you bought when you purchased your precious floss. They’re technically yours, anyway.

Features

2012 Estate All Blacks Red Blend 750ml

Deep dark purple/black color. Aromas of mulberries, plum, earth and fennel. The All Blacks is a rustic-style full-bodied red with black fruit flavors, chewy tannins and spicy undertones.

The wine was designed to resemble the "Field Blends" from days past when California wine pioneers planted multiple varieties in the same field and harvested all at the same time. By making wine in this fashion, they could achieve a more complex and savory wine without the difficulties of multiple harvests of individual size, separate varietal lots, thus creating a blend for all occasions!

2012 was a warm vintage that yielded ripe grapes. These translated into aromatic, fruit-forward wines. Vine yields were average, as were grape tannin levels. This vintage's wines are smooth and round, packed with varietal aromas and lush, ripe fruit flavors.

100% hand-picked. Bunches were 100% destemmed and berry sorted. The grapes went directly to tank without crushing to cold soak for three days at 50 degrees F. The invidiaul varietal lots fermented in 1/2 ton bins with hand punch-downs 3 times per day.

Free run (only) was drained directly to barrels after 21 days. Malolactic fermentation was completed in barrels. Barrel-aged on the lees for 18 months in 100% French oak. Racked once at 18 months to clarify and blend. The final wine was finished with another two months in French oak (for a total of 20 months in barrel).

2011 Estate Tempranillo, Red Cedar Vineyard, Paso Robles 750ml

Deep brick red to purple color. Aromas of tobacco leaf, plum, saddle leather, clove and vanilla. Full bodied with spicy rich plum, leather, earth and cigar box flavors. The wine is juicy, savory and mouth-filling with firm tannins and a long warm finish with lingering roasted coffee and toffee notes. This Tempranillo has an old world backbone with a new world finish that pairs well with cured meats, Spanish cheeses and your favorite tapas, bocadillos, or  pintxos.

100% Handpicked. 100% destemed, berry sorted, direct to fermentation bins without crushing. Cold soak for 3 days at 50 degrees F before inoculation with yeast . Fermented in 1/2 ton bins with hand-punchdowns 3 times per day.

Free run wine was drained direct to barrels after 21 days maceration and fermentation. Malolactic fermentation was completed in barrel. Racked off lees and blended after completion of the malolactic fermentation. Aged on light lees for 20 months in a 100% French oak. Racked once at 18 months to clarify and for final finishing in new Hungarian and French oak for an additional 2 months.

2012 Clayhouse Estate Show Pony Petite Sirah, Red Cedar Vineyard, Paso Robles 750ml

Inky black purple color. Aromas of ripe blueberries, mulberries, loganberries, graphite and black pepper. The wine is rich and full-bodied with sweet, ripe juicy wild blackberry and huckleberry fruit flavors. It has good weight in the mid-palate, finishing with lingering vanilla, spice and toasted bread notes. Good acidity provides a backbone to this rich wine that accompanies braised full flavored meats as well as chocolate.

2012 was a warm vintage that produced ripe fruit. This translated into fruit forward, aromatic wines. Yields were average, as were tannin levels. This produced smooth, rounded wines packed with varietal aromas and flavorful varietal fruit character. 100% Hand picked. The grapes were 100% destemmed and berry-sorted. They were sent direct to tank, without crushing. The must was left to cold soak for 5 days at 50 degrees F before inoculation with select yeast strains. The must fermented in small 1/2 ton bins, with a maximum fermentation temperature of 82-85 degrees F. This small bin, warm fermentation enhanced the wine’s mouthfeel. The cap was manually punched down 3 times each day. We used a combination of BM4x4, CLOS, and D80 yeast, to suit our desired fermentation temperature and desired aromatic results. Free run new wine was drained directly to barrels after 21 days of fermentation and maceration. Malolactic fermentation was completed in barrels. The wine aged on light lees for 20 months in a 100% French oak, standard 59 gallon barrels and 132 gallon puncheons. We racked once at 18 months to clarify and finish.

Middleton Family Wines

Owner:
Rick Middleton
Location:
Paso Robles & Central Coast, CA

Our family has been working the land since 1898, when we started a lumber business in Aberdeen, on the coast of Washington State. We began with lumber and forestry, and have thoughtfully and gradually expanded our family business to include table grapes, wine grapes, and wine. Today our businesses are at home in Hoquiam (Washington – next door to Aberdeen), Walla Walla (Washington), Delano (California), and Paso Robles (California).

Because we’ve had four generations in the family business, we’re interested in building things that will last, for the fifth, sixth, seventh generations, and beyond.  Our wine business includes three wineries: Cadaretta (Walla Walla Valley and Columbia Valley), Clayhouse (Paso Robles and Central Coast), and Buried Cane (Washington State).

The Clayhouse label and brand celebrate a historic home at our estate vineyard near Paso Robles. That 150-year-old adobe structure – the Clayhouse itself – still reminds us of the time when grapes were first planted in this area. The Clayhouse, which we’ve carefully restored, is really the ideal symbol for our vineyard and winery. After all, like the adobe, our wines are created from the earth, cultivated by hand, and nurtured by family traditions.

For the Middleton family, those traditions and deep passion for agricultural businesses go back more than four generations.

Today, Clayhouse Wines extend that proud family legacy with a selection of exceptional wines, all crafted by hand in a refined, elegant style that reflects the unique character of Paso Robles and the depth of flavor that the Central Coast imparts.
