2012 Clavo Pinot Noir, Righetti Vineyard, Paso Robles 750ml

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast

Bright red fruits makes the nose focus on free run strawberries and ripe Bing cherry notes. When tasted, the darker fruit is exposed; such as crushed cranberries and red plum compote. The wine showcases the delicate nature of this grape with soft perfumed texture that leaves way for delicate aromas. The wine's structure is why so many enjoy Pinot Noir, very bright and marked acidity with silky texture. The wine is a great example of a proper blend of grapes from the several different micro-climates found on the Central Coast.

2011 Clavo Petite Sirah - Dreamer, Paso Robles 750ml

Gold Medal - 2015 Orange County Wine Competition

The ink color of the 2011 Clavo Cellars Petite Sirah showcases extended maceration and full ripeness. The nose is covered with dark chocolate and black currants. Hints of ripe blackberries and blueberries are to be found. The soft open tannins helps create a round texture that is brightened by the bright acidity.

2010 Clavo Zinfandel - Desperado, Paso Robles 750ml

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Gold Medal - 2015 SF Chronicle Wine Competition

The red fruit dominates the nose including steeped strawberries and crushed red plums. Hints of Asian spices can be discovered. The balance of this wine is consistent with Neil's winemaking. It shows ripe fruit with restrained structure. The palate is treated to a diverse selection of red fruits, free-run strawberries, red currents, and hints of Bing cherries. The oak showcases the affinity this grape has for added structure. The maintained acidity helps keep this wine bright and balanced. This is a great example of ripe fruit with proper structure.

Our story began in the vineyards of El Paso De Robles, California; with one of the best known viticulturists in California, Neil Roberts. Neil has over 20 years of experience in the wine industry throughout California’s many appellations. His career may have started with the Mondavi family, but it truly began when he got the chance to express himself and his knowledge through Clavo Cellars. In 2004 Neil made the decision to create his first wine label.

The name Clavo was given to Neil by the Mexican-American field workers he worked very closely with during his time with Mondavi. This nickname was a symbol of acceptance and respect. When it came time to name his brand, there was no question.

He created Clavo Cellars with the intent to showcase the many qualities of the Paso Robles Appellation. Neil believes wine is grown in the vineyard and simply maintained in the cellar. Through Neil’s primary business, Roberts Vineyard Services, he manages over 1,600 acres of vineyard from the southernmost part of Monterey County down through Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo.

Neil has chosen to use only fruit from the vineyards he manages to insure quality from the ground to the glass. Clavo focuses on varietals that flourish in the microclimates throughout Paso Robles. With access to some of the best vineyard sites on the central coast of California we have created a brand that truly focuses on the best that our region has to offer.

With the exception of our Pinot Noir, Paso Robles AVA is where all of our grapes are sourced for the Clavo label. Paso Robles is known for its hot summer days and cool nights; and its steep rolling hillsides piled high with calcareous soils. This provides a perfect climate for many French, Spanish, and Italian varietals. The Pinot Noir, on the other hand, is grown in the much cooler region of Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo. Edna Valley is home to hundreds of acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region is known for its cool coastal influences and lower elevation.

Clavo Cellars is all about growing wine in the vineyard and sharing it with anyone who can appreciate the passion and hard work behind each glass.
