Flat of the land

Many, many years ago there was a common theory that Casey Flat Ranch wine was actually flat. People would say, "If you put wine in a Casey Flat Ranch bottle, it'll just fall off the edge!"

Eventually, several philosophers and scientists came together and reasoned that a wine with deep purple color and rustic tannins couldn't be flat. If it smelled like wine, it must be the same shape as all other wine.

To prove this theory, they sailed across the world and finally found themselves at the Casey Flat Red Wine. They were handed a bottle and confirmed that, no, these bottles were not flat. The voyagers raised a glass to their new findings and began celebrating.

We tell you this in case you were among that coalition of people who also thought that this wine would be flat. Fortunately, it is not! Those philosophers and scientists were right. So, if you're buying this wine, expect a bottle of wine in the shape of a bottle. End of history lesson.

Deep within the rugged terrain of the Vaca Mountains in Northern California lies the Casey Flat Ranch.  The family ranch is home to our Longhorn cattle and the vineyard is nestled on a flat, high above the Copay Valley at a 2,000-foot elevation.  The family is committed to sustainable farming, thoughtful stewardship of the environment, and creating exceptional estate wines.

2012 Casey Flat Ranch Estate Red Wine 750ml 3-Pack

Layers of intense dark berry and cassis. Pure and delicious. This wine is dense and concentrated with elegant balance and length.

The Vineyard: The Casey Flat Ranch vineyard sits on a gentle slope at a 2000-foot elevation in the rugged western mountains overlooking the Capay Valley. The 24-acre vineyard is planted to Bordeaux and Rhone varieties. The first vines were planted in 2004 and the vineyard is sustainably cultivated, using materials and farming techniques that emphasize water and soil conservation. The growing season brings warm days and cool nights, creating climate conditions similar to the St. Helena appellation, just 22 miles to the West.

The Vintage: After two cool years, we finally had a warm and sunny spring. Although the temperatures teased us in the high 30’s, we had very little need to protect our buds from the frost. Full bud break came around the end of March with slow growth through the month of April. From late Spring to Summer and into Fall, the weather was consistently dry, sunny and warm. It was a near perfect growing season across the North Coast.

“Each CFR block is farmed, harvested and made as a unique wine specific to that soil, varietal, clone and microclimate. It is not until almost two years later that we blend these blocks together to craft the CFR Estate Red Wine. Only the very best of CFR goes into the blend.”

High in the Vaca Range along the eastern border of Napa County sits one of the most remarkable vineyards in all of California. And yet, as unique and special as this place is, the odds are you’ve never heard of it or the AVA it calls home.  The story of Casey Flat Ranch is a tale of vision, exploration, discovery and perseverance. It’s also a reminder there are still great wine producing sites in the Golden State that have yet to be discovered.

Originally part of the Berryessa Spanish land grant, area settlement began in the 1850's with the California Gold Rush. Valley locals of the time named the property Casey Flat for legendary frontiersman and early homesteader John Casey. Today the expansive 6000-acre Ranch is home to the Casey Flat Ranch Vineyards, supports a modest Longhorn Cattle operation, and reflects the values of the Robert and Maura Morey family - owners for over a quarter century. Casey Flat Ranch exemplifies stewardship of our environment, preservation of our natural resources, and is representative of a new and more contemporary Western sensibility towards the land and its use.
