Color Clash

OK, let's settle this reds vs. whites thing once and for all.

It ends now. Today. Right here. We're settling the eternal struggle once and for all.

When you make your choice between the Cameron Hughes Mixed Red Bundle and the Cameron Hughes Mixed White Bundle, you're not just voting for gold-medal wines. You're also voting for which color wine will forever be known as the champion. Crisp citrussy whites or bold berrified reds: only one can win.

Why here? Why now? Why not? You're not likely to find so many superb examples of each type in one place anywhere else. So we thought it was the ideal time to finally put the whole question to bed.

What if you like both? You better buy one of each bundle, then. You do want your voice to be heard, don't you?

These wines, while enjoyable at any time during the year, are best sipped on in summer. Add them to your Seasonal Cellar alongside other wines that should be enjoyed at specific times, such as:

Winter Wines - Unlike the lighter, sweeter summer wines, winter wines are often dry, red, and go well with being cold and miserable.

Merlober October - A collection of 31 Zinfandels, one for each day. Not to be taken part in alone.

A Very Sherry Christmas - Nothing says “I wish I didn’t have to deal with my family” more than a big old bottle of fortified wine.

Chardonnay Day - A holiday in Chardonnay, France, where residents must consume nothing but Chardonnay for a full 24-hour period.

Port Year - Portugal declared 1966 to be “The Year of Port,” when everyone drank this dessert wine with dinner for the entire year. At the end of the year they were faced with the reality of how gross Port is, and decided to just export it from there on out.

Breakfast Gewürztraminer - A wine designed specifically for Germans (you drink it in the morning).

Features

Whites:

2012 Lot 393 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 750ml 2-Pack

Bright and elevated notes of guava, passion fruit, citrus, flint and spring flowers. Playful interplay of juicy acidity and lush tropical notes on the palate.

2011 Lot 364 Atlas Peak Chardonnay 750ml 2-Pack

Lot 364 is marvelous and deeply inflected with Vetiver and Bergamot essence overlaying a chorus of ripe fruits and white flowers.

2011 Lot 359 Columbia Valley Riesling/Chenin Blanc 750ml 2-Pack

Lot 359 is layered with racy citrus and stone-fruit facets. Sultry nectarine and white floral notes abound. A juicy and balanced palate resolve with a vibrant and fresh finish. Stunning.

  • 90 pts: 2012 World Value Wine Challenge

Reds:

2010 Lot 357 Napa Meritage 750ml 2-Pack

Beautiful, lifted nose of mint, cassis, and dusty black fruit with hints of black tea and olive. The palate is seamless, with juicy black fruit core and velvety tannins. Delicious.

  • Gold Medal: SF International Wine Competition

2011 Lot 352 Cote Du Rhone, France 750ml 2-Pack

Lot 352 is laced with scents of fresh berry, peppercorn and fruit jam. The wine is texturally lush with cherry and plum flavors interlocked with black pepper and tapenade to finish. The wine has great purity and freshness. Phenomenal.

Cameron Hughes assembled the blend of big, rich componentry and laid it into barrels (in France) for about 14 months of barrel aging. The result is a dynamic Grenache/Syrah blend which is notable for its riper, richer style than your typical Côtes du Rhône.

2010 Lot 339 California Field Blend 750ml 2-Pack

Lot 339 is fresh with delineated black fruits, peppers, cherries and red plum notes. Integrated tannins frame a chewy finish meshed with exotic spice notes.

Lot 339 combines Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre for a tasty California spin on these famous Rhone varietals. This wine is the best of the old-world and the new, the classic and the updated…Purity of essence if you will.

2012 Lot 393 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 750ml 2-Pack
Lot 393 Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from a vineyard in the southeastern hills of Napa Valley. This vineyard resides on ancient, weathered, alluvial fans of silty impoverished soils that contribute an intense brightness and mineral austerity.

  • Style: Light, Crisp
  • Flavors: Grapefruit, Melon

2011 Lot 364 Atlas Peak Chardonnay 750ml 2-Pack

A stylistic departure from the 2010, I think this wine lands somewhere between the 2010 AP Chardonnay and our Arroyo Seco Chard Lots. It sees a larger percentage of new oak and is overall a bigger, richer style. 2011 was a tough harvest in Napa Valley, but less challenging by a wide margin up on Atlas Peak. While fogs socked in the Valley, Atlas Peak was bright and sunny. Like our past Atlas Peak Chardonnay bottling, this wine is sourced from the same blocks that comprise the vineyard's own $35 bottle.

  • Style: Light, Crisp
  • Flavors: Citrus, Grass, Melon

2011 Lot 359 Columbia Valley Riesling/Chenin Blanc 750ml 2-Pack

Sam blends in a generous amount of Chenin Blanc to finish out an already wonderful Riesling. This balances the acid and sugar of the Riesling while filling the nose with some savory fruit. This wine makes a great Summer-time sipper and is a true crowd-pleaser. It's priced for everyday drinking and perfect for parties.

Style:

  • Light, citrus and stone fruit flavors
  • White peach and nectarine and white flower notes

Woot Shipping:  (-$7.00)
Total MSRP:   $132.99

2010 Lot 357 Napa Meritage 750ml 2-Pack

Lot 357 is an amalgam of some of the best terroir of Napa Valley, comprised of primarily Oakville and Yountville Cabernet and Merlot with smaller portions sourced from Atlas Peak and Carneros (small amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec also in the blend). The list of wineries included in this component blend reads like a who’s who of Napa Valley, but alas, I can name only Stagecoach Vineyard as one of the sources. Rockin’ stuff.
  • Style: Medium, Fruity
  • Flavors: Raspberry, Spice

2011 Lot 352 Cote Du Rhone, France 750ml 2-Pack

Style: Medium, Fruity
Flavors: Cherry, Pepper, Plum

2010 Lot 339 California Field Blend 750ml 2-Pack

Style: Medium, Fruity
Flavors: Blackberry, Cherry, Pepper, Plum
Gold Medal: 2012 Denver International Wine Competition
