A rosé by any other name would still make boring dinner parties more tolerable.

It's come to our attention that there are still people (STILL) who won’t drink rosé. FOOLS. We figure it must be a marketing thing, and since we are clearly experts at marketing, we thought, “Okay, let’s rebrand rosé, starting with a name change.” A few thoughts:

Features

Bravium translates from Latin as “reward, prize, or gift.” Proprietor and Winemaker Derek Rohlffs founded Bravium in 2007 to produce terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines that explore its diverse vineyards of the California coast. Vineyards are located in the Anderson Valley, Mendocino Ridge, Napa and Sonoma Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands, and Sonoma Coast appellations. Wines are sold direct to mailing list members and in select retail and restaurant placements.

Derek employs simple winemaking techniques -gravity-moving wines and bottling his red wines unfined and unfiltered - allowing the source fruit to remain at the forefront, vine to bottle. "The longer I make wine, the more I subscribe to a 'less is more' approach," Derek has said.

Derek also owns Outlier Wine Co., which features a wide-ranging roster of distinctive wines, from Proprietary White and Red Blends - White Wedding and Lucky - to varietal bottlings.

2013 Bravium North Coast Rose of Pinot Noir 750ml 2-Pack

This rose is characterized by its racy acidity and delicious strawberry and cherry fruit flavors.  The fruit has a sweet character that might trick you into thinking there's some RS going on here, but we can assure you there is not!  Intriguing pit fruit flavors ride the acid backbone to a taught, mineral-laced finish.  Refreshing and palate cleansing, this rose is an enjoyable sipper but only gets better with food.

To make this bone-dry Rose of Pinot Noir, Derek Rohlffs picks fruit early to capture crisp acidity.  He also bottles his rose earlier than many of his peers to retain some of the fermentation bouquet and lively mouthfeel he and his assistant winemakers enjoy while crafting the wine.  He borrows some of his rose winemaking practices from Domaine Tempier, using a combination of direct pressing, short-term maceration, and saignee methods, creating a beautiful light red hue.  With timely harvesting, no secondary fermentation, and a very light aging regimen, the wine is alive, vibrant, and tongue-tingling.

2014 Bravium Rose of Pinot Noir, Signal Ridge Vineyard 750ml 2-Pack

Signal Ridge Vineyard, one of Mendocino Ridge's very few plantings, is situated on a steep mountainside three ridgelines in from the Pacific Ocean. At 2,642 feet elevation, the vineyard aspect varies from Southwest to Southeast with up to a 32% slope. The shallow, low-fertility soil is primarily composed of sandstone, clay and gravelly loam [Garcia-Snook-Gube complex]. This extremely exposed vineyard produces singular, site-driven wines. Signal Ridge is planted to a wide variety of clonal selections, across eight blocks, including Swan and Pommard, 2A, as well as 115, 777, and 828.

Fermentation & Aging: Meticulously hand-sorted fruit was treated with three rosé winemaking techniques: one lot was direct pressed, one underwent a short-term maceration, and the last one was a saignée portion. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks and neutral French oak barrels with all of the wine being aged in oak for a limited time to add body to the final blend.

Light cherry red color in the glass. The nose is extremely heady for a rosé and I loved it. Aromas of cherries, rose petal, pine sap, and herbs lead to a flavorful core of cherry, strawberry, spice and herb flavors. A little more substantial than your usual rosé, with plenty of Pinot character, and inviting intensity of flavor on the crisp finish. Highly enjoyable. - PinotFile VOLUME 10, ISSUE 12 June 14, 2015

2014 Bravium Rose of Pinot Noir, Muns Vineyard 750ml 2-Pack

Muns vineyard is situated at 2600 feet on top of a ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains overlooking the Monterey bay, the highest Pinot Noir vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a prime growing region for Pinot Noir. The vineyard enjoys the coastal climate of the mountains, with cool fog lapping over in the summer, gentle breezes and maximum sunlight - perfect for growing Pinot Noir. These factors along with moderate days and cool nights produce fruit with rich and complex flavors.

Moderately light pinkish orange color in the glass. Aromas and flavors of strawberry, blood orange, nectarine, apricot and a touch of spice and herbs have good intensity. A good grip of acidity underlies the fruit core and contributes a finishing burst of citrus-driven acidity. - [PinotFile VOLUME 10, ISSUE 12 June 14, 2015]
