Drops of Jupiter?

Benessere? I loved their hit song "Satisfaction."

Sangiovese is loaded with history. Did you know, for example, that the name “Sangiovese” translates to “Blood of Jove,” and is a nod to the Roman god Jupiter? Did you know Sangiovese dates all the way back to the Etruscans? You don’t get this kind of rich history with, say, Capri Sun.

You get it with Benessere’s 2009 Sangiovese. Plums, dried cherries, blackberry jam, and sandalwood on the nose. Fruit, spice, and French oak in the mouth.

That’s some tasty Jupiter juice!

2009 Benessere Estate Sangiovese, Napa Valley 750ml 4-Pack

Great Sangiovese should possess many elements: beautiful deep-ruby color, fragrant aromatics and a soulful, food-friendly taste.  We feel we have achieved this with our 2009 Estate Sangiovese.  Plums, dried cherries, blackberry jam, and sandalwood are readily apparent in the nose.  Depth of fruit, spice and a judicious amount of French oak are dominant components in the mouth.  The clean core of acidity and lingering finish with substantial yet supple tannins are hallmarks of a wine that is drinkable now, but will last for a decade or more.

Vintage: 2009 was a late vintage of moderation.  Benessere experienced the latest Budbreak in our 12 year history on April 1st, 2009, caused in part by an extremely wet and cool early spring.  Although we had a heat spike in July, the rest of the summer was mild, which continued on into the early fall.  Subsequently, harvest came late for the second year in a row.  After a quick shot of early rainfall at the beginning of harvest, the weather cooperated nicely to allow the fruit to ripen fully.  For the second year in a row, we achieved physical maturity of the fruit without excessive sugar or raisining.

Specs

Winemaking: We continue to utilize our outstanding "stable" of Sangiovese clones to produce and bottle a wine that is 100% varietal without the addition of other varietals. 2009 offered a beautiful growing season with which to create this powerful, yet elegant wine. Benessere is continuing in its quest to produce the finest varietal Sangiovese possible through gentle handling of the fruit and resulting wine, which is integral to our winemaking style. Hand sorting, manual punch-downs of the cap during fermentation and gravity/nitrogen decanting contribute to the depth of flavor and aroma.  Fining and filtration are unnecessary and leave more flavor and color in the wine. After 12 years of producing Sangiovese in Napa Valley, we feel we are beginning to understand this extremely fickle varietal.

  • Blend Composition:  100% Sangiovese
  • Harvest Dates: September 13 - October 3
  • Brix at Harvest: 24.6-26.4
  • Finished pH: 3.64
  • Finished TA: 6.3 g/liter
  • Alcohol: 14.5%
  • Production: 1841 cases

Benessere is the Italian word for "well being" or "living the good life" and the name reflects a dedication to producing fine, Napa Valley-grown, Italian varietals and a penchant for providing warm, casual hospitality.

That has been the Benish Family mission since 1994 when thirty vineyard acres surrounding the St. Helena winery were planted primarily to Italian varietals.  Their distinctive Italian wine portfolio includes two varieties not found at any other Napa Valley winery - Aglianico and Sagrantino.  Other featured wines include: Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, Rosato di Sangiovese, Old Vine Collins Holystone Vineyard Zinfandel, Moscato di Canelli, and our proprietary red blend - Phenomenon.

The eclectic, high-quality wine collection combined with a picturesque, vineyard-side setting provides a wine tasting experience unique to the Napa Valley.
