2009 Black Glass Zinfandel, Napa Valley 750ml 2-Pack

Hand-harvested fruit from this land was gently destemmed into small open-topped tanks for cold-soaking and fermentation.  The total maceration time in 2009 was 31 days.  The new wine was then drained and pressed and placed in a combination of new American Oak and once-used French Oak barrels for aging.  Racked twice during its 15 months in the barrel, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration to retain the maximum flavor and complexity.

On first pouring, is brilliant medium red, with distinctive terroir and velvety texture.  Spicy cherry and bright blackberry aromas that are complemented by clove and allspice tones that carry through to the palate.  We suggest pairing ribe-eye. steaks, lamb shank, blue cheese, and Belgian chocolates.  The well-structured 2009 vintage will age well for the next five to seven years.


2010 Black Glass Zinfandel, Napa Valley 750ml 2-Pack

Black Glass Zinfandel from the Benessere Estate is rich and layered. Black raspberry and blueberry aromas emerge from the glass. Fine-grained tannins show just a kiss of new French oak. Hints of black pepper play off the deep fruit flavors. Rich cocoa/mocha flavors emerge on the palate and carry through the long finish.

Winemaking: Our estate Black Glass Vineyard Zinfandel takes its name from the obsidian that surfaces in the vineyard after each rain. Much of this obsidian was shaped into spear points or arrowheads 150 years ago. Zinfandel seems to thrive here—perhaps the black obsidian captures heat that lets the vine roots develop more healthy structures.

In the winery we treat our Zinfandel as gently as our Sangiovese. We ferment in open top tanks and gently punch down twice each day. When the fermentation is complete we mature the wine in mostly neutral French and Hungarian oak barrels, as well as a few, larger puncheons.


2011 Black Glass Zinfandel, Napa Valley 750ml 2-Pack

Lively, even exuberant, on the palate, this wine displays the spicy side of Zinfandel, with notes of baked clove and black pepper. The wine boasts aromas of violets and berries, which carry through on the palate as boysenberry, blackberry and black raspberry flavors that are ripe but not jammy.

Winemaking: Our Zinfandel was hand-picked and destemmed into a small open-top fermentor.  The must was gently punched down throughout the 14-day maceration.  The fermented wine went into once-used and neutral French oak barrels for 26 months maturation before bottling without fining or filtration.

Vintage: Cool temperatures in 2010 led to a long growing season.  A post-verasion heat spike briefly accelerated ripening before cooler than normal temperatures returned, allowing the grapes to ripen at their leisure.

Zinfandel is a variety that thrives in a wide range of conditions, and the cooler weather allowed us to let the grapes hang on the vines longer, developing rich, complex flavors.

Pairing: This wine is remarkably versatile. It can be enjoyed on its own or with hard cheeses in front of the fireplace, or with anything off the grill We would also recommend a blackened steak, or lasagne with spinach and sage.

Saniovese:  We utilize our 10 acres of an outstanding "stable" of Sangiovese cloes to produce and bottle a wine that is100% varietal without the addition of other grape varieties.  The wines are beautiful deep-ruby color, fragrant aromatics and a soulful, food-friendly taste.  Plums, dried cherries, blackberry jam, and sandalwood are readily apparent in the nose.  Depth of fruit, spice and a judicious amount of French oak are dominant components in the mouth.  The clean core of acidity and lingering finish with substantial yet supple tannins are hallmarks of a fine Sangiovese.
