Gris Is The Word
Willamette Valley vintners like Bell Wine Cellars are known for Pinot Noir. If the Dub-Vee (that's what the cool kids call it, we've decided) had a coat of arms, it would feature a Pinot Noir grape vanquishing a sword-wielding lion, or something.
But they're not all about the dark side. In their lighter moments, Bell can vint one hell of a Pinot Gris. Golden, crisp, and fruity, the Bell Willamette Valley 2009 Pinot Gris is the yang to Pinot Noir's yin, with apricot, white peach, citrus, melon, and pineapple notes refreshing enough to almost make you forget all about Willamette's rep for that darker Pinot.
We said almost. Let's not get too carried away.
Features
The Willamette Valley Pinot Gris has an attractive golden hue with a bouquet of apricot and white peach. The refreshing flavors of lemon/lime, melon and pineapple fill the mouth and linger. This crisp and fruity wine is a delicious accompaniment to Asian dishes, or enjoyed on its own.
Viticulture
Winegrowing in Oregon's Willamette Valley has been well established since the 1860s. The Valley is a large and climatically diverse region extending more than 150 miles, from Portland to Eugene, dwarfing valleys such as Napa. Since the valley is exposed directly to maritime airflow off the Pacific Ocean, site selection and management is absolutely critical to fruit quality. Winters are mild, but cool, wet summers make the work of achieving optimum ripeness and balance every winemaker’s challenge. The Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir of the Bell Oregon Collection come from vineyards around the Willamette Valley.
The Bell Pinot Gris comes from vineyards in the northwestern part of the valley known as the Van Duzer corridor. The corridor, which runs (west to east) across the Willamette Valley, brings in cool late afternoon breezes from the ocean which help to moderate summer heat. The gently sloping southern facing vineyards, featuring brick-red volcanic soils that drain particularly well, produce a Pinot Gris with the perfect combination of minerality and appealing mouth feel.
