Atlas Hugged

Once there was a Titan named Atlas, but he lost a fight with Zeus. Zeus was a real sore loser, so he made Atlas carry the weight of the heavens on his shoulders. It was super heavy, which really sucked.

So when Heracles came by one day asking for help to get some apples, Atlas was happy to get a break. Apparently Eurystheus wanted Heracles to get these apples because Eurystheus was a demanding jerk or something.

Anyway, so Atlas went ahead and got the apples. Upon returning, both he and Heracles were privately thinking about how they could trick the other into holding the heavens forever. But then they both realized how petty they were acting, and that neither of them were being a particularly good friend. So instead of trying to fool each other, they decided to snub the other gods and just hang out together. They turned the apples into some great Napa Valley grapes, and made a whole ton of wine. It was named “Atlas Peak” after Atlas, since Heracles felt like he already had plenty of recognition, and was happy to let Atlas have this one small thing. They drank a ton of the wine, and had a great time. They also just went ahead and dropped the heavens, which is where thunderstorms come from.

Features

2008 Atlas Peak Wines Petit Verdot, Napa Valley 750ml 2-Pack

The 2008 vintage was characterized by a beautiful and warm ripening season. Bud break was slightly later than average. Overall, the season was very mild with two brief heat waves in September which pushed the maturity along. As a result it was not as late as we thought it would be but the crop load was a little below average.

Color: Black orchid purple/red – tremendous depth of color

Nose: Perfumed and spicy with cocoa, coffee, and mission fig aromas

Palate: A substantial wine with dark berry, musk and rich oak combine into an intense beautifully structured palate. Balanced with nuanced texture and length.

Food Pairing: Carpaccio, olive-based dishes such as simple crostini with tapenade, tomato-laced dishes and skewered, roasted meats.

Winemaking: The majority of our winemaking takes place in the vineyard throughout the growing season. Once harvested the fruit is further sorted and de-stemmed into small fermenters. Our daily protocol of punch down cap management extracts the richness of the fruit and the powerful tannins. To better integrate the substantial tannin the wine undergoes an extended maceration for several weeks. After complete malolactic fermentation it racked into 80% new, 60-gallon French oak barrels, where it spent 22 months before bottling.

Atlas Peak Wines

Owner:
Accolade Wines
Founded:
1987
Location:
Napa, CA

Atlas Peak was established in 1987. Over time it became clear that Atlas Peak’s most valuable hidden resource was literally underfoot: the elevation of its vineyards. The grapes growing at high elevation, and above the natural fog line, experience much lower daytime temperatures than those on the valley floor, allowing the grapes to stay cool while gaining maximum sun exposure. As a result, growers up on the mountain can afford to harvest later and pick for flavor with less worry about over ripening and excessive alcohol. No grape develops as well in mountain conditions as Cabernet Sauvignon.

The mountain series from Atlas Peak explores the diversity of the Napa Valley region at an entirely different level. Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is known for its lush, full-bodied character with big, bold tannins, and deep, concentrated color. The Mountain Cabernet Series includes five wines sourced from four of the finest mountain appellations in Napa: Atlas Peak, Mt. Veeder, Spring Mountain District, and Howell Mountain. Our goal at Atlas Peak is to create wines that distinctly reflect their origin.
