2011 Argent Wines Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, Vlahos Ranch 750ml 4-Pack

The 2011 Argent Wines Zinfandel has brambly berry notes with a classic Dry Creek flavor profile- raspberries, boysenberries and plum with a spice component. Nice acid and a nice finish.

Our Zinfandel comes from the 2.7 acre Vlahos Ranch Block 1, located way up Chemise Road in Dry Creek Valley at an elevation of 950 feet. This vineyard is >99% Zinfandel with a very small fraction of Grenache Noir (Tablas Creek Vineyard Clone D) and Durif (Petite Sirah). The vineyard was laid out and planted in 2007 by the well-known vineyardist John Clendenen. The Vlahos Ranch Zinfandel Block has a southeast exposure and is consistently above the fog line. Typical summertime high temperatures are in the range of 85 - 95 °F and the vineyard routinely sees low temperatures of 50 °F - 55 °F. West winds of 20-30 mph are typical in the evening and night resulting in rapid cooling of the vines and leaving us with very good wine acidities. The shallow soils are a rocky, clay loam over rock. In many ways, the vineyard character is similar to the Rockpile Appellation located 10 miles to the north. Argent Wines manages the vineyard for the land owners and is striving for modest-yield, highly concentrated fruit picked ripe with a target alcohol of < 15%.

Owner and wine aficionado Rick Spielman started Argent Wines in 2008, with a vision of making idiosyncratic wines from the Dry Creek Valley area of Sonoma County. Raised in Northern California and a UC Davis graduate he always had an intense interest in wine making and wine appreciation.

By 2008 Rick realized that his focus had to be on unique small vineyards with great locations. In 2009, he found the beautiful Stryker Petite Sirah Vineyard on benchland in Alexander Valley about 5 miles away. He was very lucky to get exclusive access to this fruit. Then in 2010 he made wine from the second vintage produced from Zinfandel from the Vlahos Ranch in Dry Creek Valley. After tasting the wine, he took over vineyard management in January 2011 and now totally controls the vineyard. Argent Wines is always looking for new opportunities for quality grapes. In 2012 he found a small vineyard owned by Fred Cosentino in the Russian River Valley producing some perfect Syrah.

Our goal in the future is to slowly increase our production and to make a few barrels of Grenache Noir, Pinot Noir, and/or Syrah as the quality grapes become available. We are always looking for high-quality, small vineyards and may plant a couple of additional acres of vines at the Vlahos Ranch.
