Dark ruby and garnet core with a crimson rim. Concentrated and intense; nuances cocoa, forest floor, truffles and red currant back up dark cherry and kirsch. A slight capsicum note gives this wine its varietal thumbprint without being overbearing. Round and generous with great flavor intensity and a persistent finish, this wine is seductive and polished.

Horse Heaven Hills
Naturally bounded on the North by the Yakima Valley appellation and on the South by the Columbia River, Horse Heaven Hills was officially designated as an AVA in 2005. It's proximity to the Columbia River and a distinctive topography moderate the extreme temperatures of the area and provide steep, south-facing slopes for quick-draining loamy soils.

Alder Ridge Vineyard
First planted in 1997, Alder Ridge is one of the state's most coveted vineyards, on a rolling plain set atop a steep bluff above the Columbia River. Natural wind and air drainage protects the vines from the dramatic weather changes, both in the summer and winter. Alder Ridge is known for exceptional long hang time, with a moderating effect of the river on summer heat spikes and winter freezes, giving the Cabernet for which the vineyard is known tougher skins and firm tannins.

Fermentation: All lots were hand-sorted, destemmed and fermented separately using traditional, small-lot handling techniques; emphasis given to pressing times to ensure balanced tannins and maximum fruit expression.

A ripe and expressive style, aromas and flavors of juicy black cherry and red currants carry through the palate with full body, finishing with a persistent, almost sweet fruit finish with hints of herbal, clove-filled oak notes.

Vineyard Profile
This renowned vineyard has 27 geologically formed benches, created nearly 20,000 years ago by the Great Missoula Floods. These sun-drenched, mostly south-facing benches start at an elevation of 1.400 feet and step all the way down to the shore of the Columbia River. Microclimates abound, suiting many varieties, and the up-sweeping winds benefit the vines by controlling pests. keeping the canopy naturally thinned and contributing to well-structured tannins (by toughening grape skins). The sandy soils promote deep rooting and the river serves as a natural insulator against winter and summer extremes.

Vintage Background
The warmest vintage in a decade, 2013's growing season cooled off just in time for harvest, and picking proceeded at a normal pace starting at the end of August. Total tonnage, approximately 220,000 tons, was up easily five percent over 2012, a record for Washington State. With a warm 2013 vintage, growers spread out canopies a bit more than usual and adjusted crop sizes to achieve a good balance of acidity and phenolic ripeness. Mother Nature made picking advantageous; varieties reached ripeness at different times, allowing crews a well-phased, thoughtfully-planned harvest.
