looking for a nice restaurant in the la area that either has a nice, not ridiculously marked up wine list, or good corkage policy... it's been a while since i lived in the city... can only think of manchego for now...

any tips?

wine woot gatherings: manchego dinner, '11 cyber pub bottling, '12 cyber pub bottling, DMV #25, #26, #28, #29, #29.5, #30, NY #19, NY #20; socal #22

What parts of LA are you looking in? I remember being satisfied with fair wine lists/prices at Cafe Pinot and Fickle downtown and Papilles in Hollywood, though it's been a little while for me as well.

thanks. probably looking anywhere downtown and west... so downtown, mid wilshire, hollywood, even out to santa monica would be ok

I've never even been to LA but I was reading Wine Spectator today and they had a list of award winning restaurants, based upon their wine programs. Of over 3,800 award winners, only 73 received the Grand Award which denotes "uncompromised, passionate devotion to their wine program".

I looked for Grand Award restaurants that appeared to be in the general area you requested and have their wine prices listed as "moderate" instead of "expensive".

Here are two that I found...

Patina
141 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles
213-972-3331
Wine strengths: Bordeaux, California, Burgundy
Wine selections: 1,600 - Bottles: 14,000
Wine prices: Moderate - Corkage: $30
Cuisine: French/Californian
Menu Prices: $38-$48

Valentino
3115 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica
310-829-4313
Wine strengths: Italy, France, California
Wine selections: 2,795 - Bottles: 81,670
Wine Prices: Moderate - Corkage: $35
Cuisine: Italian
Menu prices: $30-$40

I recall a freakenomics article on said wine list restaurants. The end result was a fake restraurant with a nice wine list got their award.

I third this. There are a few places where you can also find $10 corkage. I would need to go find the list somewhere.
If you want additional company you might get a few of us out to join you too! And/or I'm sure you could convince us to open a few nice bottles if you came by one evening.

Patina is an outstanding restaurant - probably one of the top 5 traditional fine dining restaurants in the the City. However, those prices seem a bit low. I'd plan on spending $150+ for a couple; my wife and I ate there a few years ago before a play at Dorothy Chandler, and the bill was around $200 (before tip) for 2 apps, 2 entrees, cheese, coffee, and corkage (we were pressed for time so we didn't order dessert, but they did give us lovely and delicious little chocolates on the way out).

Depends what you're looking for. We had a perfectly delicious 3 course prix fixe there a couple months ago. It's not going to knock your socks off in either creativity or execution, but it's good food prepared well. If you're feeling like French bistro type food, that is. (Their lobster bisque is excellent...rich and lobstery.)

i guess we're looking for a place that would be able to serve up food to compliment top end wine, particulary burgundy... i think there may be one or more bottles from the drc family present for dinner...

ended up going to upstairs 2.
highly recommended. food exceeded my expectations, nice wine list that's very very reasonably marked up...

we coravin'd a 69 drc rc and a 78 ausone and opened a 03 corison and was only charged $25 for corkage. usually corkage is $15/btl for outside wine, i think it may be $10 for wine purchased at the winestore below....
