I bought three sets (mostly because of shipping, and figured they would make good gifts for friends we're cruising with), so I didn't feel bad sacrificing one (I wanted to see if the broken glass would cut through the plastic). I filled an empty wine bottle, and dropped it on the tile floor- nothing. So I threw it in the air onto the floor. Nothing. So I threw it down the stairs (vinyl over wood, laminate at the bottom). Nothing.
At that point I was bored and I stopped. But I'm pretty confident about these now!
Bottles - especially full bottles - are actually pretty solid and difficult to break. We often forget that bottles have been made and designed with shipping in mind.
Mythbusters did an episode that involved figuring out the force needed to break beer bottles, and even when they swung full bottles as hard as they could against a football helmet, the bottle wouldn't break (the helmet absorbed a good deal of the energy, as it is designed to do, but unless you're really trying to break a bottle, you're probably not going to).
