Small individual pots would be easier to fit on window sills, and you can buy seeds and Jiffy pellets anywhere.

Indoor herb gardens = cool.

$60, though? Probably not.

So, we're supposed to grow spices, get familiar with the different tastes, and then point them out in a future wine offering? Is this part of the Taste Training chapter in Wine.Woot 101?

Hey Thunderthighs!!! The Specs say 2" in diameter and 15" high... Ugh?? 2" in diameter is probably not accurate. Just a heads up. Thx. :-)

I found this on their site. I was wondering what the measurements were.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big is the Stack & Grow when it is assembled?

24" wide and 15" tall. Additional trays can be purchased making it 24" wide and 30" tall.
How do the trays stack together?

No tools or additional parts are required for assembly! The trays interlock by lining up pins & holes on each tray. Simple to follow instructions are included with each planter.
What is the Stack & Grow made of?

High quality UV protected polypropylene plastic. It won't stain your deck or cement like ceramic pots.
How high can the Stack & Grow

The planter has been designed to be stacked a maximum of 8 planting trays high. No additional hardware needed for stability.
Why does one tray have a closed bottom while the other trays are open?

The closed-bottom tray allows you to control the depth of soil in the center cavity, based upon where you place it in the stack. See helpful hints page.
Which plants grow best in the Stack & Grow?

There is a large variety of plants that grow well in the Stack & Grow planter. We recommend 2-4" potted flowers or plants. The Stack & Grow makes a great strawberry planter. See planting ideas page.
MAINTAIN YOUR PLANTS

Prune, pinch and deadhead your garden regularly. It will prolong the life of your plants while keeping them looking their best.
GOING OUT OF TOWN?

Water all your stackable planters well and place in a shady location to help plants from drying out while you are away. Lack of sun for a short period of time will not hurt your container garden.

I have to give it to woot. The ordering process once you have an account is incredibly simple and is definitely one of many reasons my bank account is so low all the time.

I wouldn't call saving $15 a horrible price, but I do feel like the days of Woot offering really tremendous deals are pretty much gone. Deals these days tend to be about 10-20% off what you might pay elsewhere for the same item in the same condition, and many of the items are outdated or discontinued so it's easy to get burned.

To be fair, ~23% off gross cost is nothing to scoff at. People get plenty excited over a third as much in sales tax!

I got one of these via Amazon last winter... same price. Shipping was perhaps a bit more (not available for prime). I really like the kit. The selection of herbs is great with clear, concise instructions, and the hanging stacker really saves space! It's not for someone who has to use herbs in huge supplies, but for the person who likes using fresh herbs just for certain things, this is perfect! When you don't have a lot of room, it helps to have something like that... that's why I got it.

Lucky for you, when designing the new site they decided to abandon the feature that would force you to buy things. You're free to say no.

Growing your own herbs and spices is great. I currently have an over-abundance of mint so I share with neighbors. My basil died during the winter so I'm in the process of regrowing that one from seeds again this year.

Don't use too many of the other herbs or spices so more than two or three is really overkill.

Growing tomatoes and peppers is a good alternative to herbs but they take more room to grow and wouldn't fit in a device like these.

OK - I get that, but where does the $89.90 retail come from? Seems if the company's website is selling it, and it's not being discounted, that would be the list price.

What spices do you grow? Herbs, sure, but spices? Cinnamon? Black pepper? Star anise? Cardamon? Nutmeg? Saffron?

That's very funny. A spice is an aromatic or pungent vegetable substance used to flavor food. Basil and Mint qualify for that definition.

Cinnamon is a tree bark. Why did you consider that a spice?

What would salt be? It's a seasoning too but how do you grow that?

Cool concept, but fails in price. This Herb Garden was offered before for $20. They just want us to pay an extra $40 for the planter now.

I the Herb garden was a good deal, I bought one. This, not so much.

I am also very disappointed in woot for inflating the retail price, like other sites do, to present a higher savings. That is one reason why I don't purchase from those sites.

That is just the planter. It does not come with the herb starter kit.

I pretty much think the dictionary.com definition of a spice is incorrect. It is my understanding that herbs are seasonings that come from the leaves of plants and are things like cilantro, basil, thyme, mint, etc. Spices on the other hand come from the other parts of the plant like seeds (corriander, caraway), roots (ginger), bark (cinnamon), and flowers (saffron).

As for salt, its a rock so doesn't come from a plant and it isn't a spice or herb.

I notice at the nursery most of these plants are designated "full sun". Just don't think I can find enough sunlight indoors to keep these plants healthy.

That's fair. I grow that from time to time by accident, when the cilantro bolts before I pick it.

I gave up growing cilantro, actually. It's always very droopy and bolts prematurely. I just grow a ton of basil and buy my cilantro at the Mexican market.

They qualify by that definition, but that definition is not one that anyone actually uses.

Presto pesto . . . not! I don't see how you could grow enough basil in this thing to make enough pesto to be worth the effort. Even if you grew nothing else. At which point it would be a pretty expensive bunch of basil.

I bought the previous Herb grow kit here, but it was only $20. Looking at the photos, this is exactly the same kit + the added pots. One thing I think they should add to the kit, some name stakes so you can label your herbs once their growing.

Just last week I started my herbs and they're all growing fine, now I just need some pots!
