I decided to go ahead and open that bottle since I did not know the extent of the loss of cork's sealing integrity. Removed the foil, and there was red all around the top edge the cork. Once opened it was easy to see a very visible track down the side of the cork. But a little more concerning was how far up the cork wine had traveled: pretty much all around the base of the cork. But not evenly and not of the type were the wine has had time to really wet and stain the cork as it did near the base of the cork. The staining away from the base was all on the surface. The staining came up about about a 1/3 of the way from the base of the cork and was similar in color to the streak that made it all the way to the top.
One reason I bought this wine is all reports said it would cellar for a while. But if this bottle is any indication of the rest that would probably not be a good idea. It is not that the wine was bad. There just was not much to it. There was some fruit, not much (almost nothing) in the way of any tannins and a rather short finish. It was not bad. Just not something I'd consider suitable for cellaring for several years.
It is obvious the cork leaked on this one bottle. My concern is the leakage was due to heat and not only due to an individual cork issue. On the other hand, the wine could be suffering from bottle shock. Or maybe the leak was such as to allow the wine to oxidize a bit, and this is its "second day." I'll wait 8 weeks or so and try another bottle.
I had the same experience with my delivery, cork leakage was evident and on the packaging when I opened the box. The styro packaging was not snug around the tops of the bottles, so I assume it was jostled too much in shipping. It was also very hot in Ohio and I had to have my package held at the FedEx store.
I know that Thursday is w00t's target delivery day, but I'm not around during the time-frame they deliver. FedEx policy states they must attempt delivery at least once before one can have a package held for pick-up. But, there are no facilities near me. Thirty-miles from me, but NOT NEAR me! I wish w00t would go back to UPS, or at least give us a choice of shippers. My UPS driver never had a problem signing for me and leaving the package. Of course, I tipped him well at Christmas.
After all that, I emailed service w00t and they offered a refund or replacement. I opted for replacement because I really liked the wine and i had hoped to cellar a few bottles.
