First! Hopefully, everyone is getting over their after-holiday hangovers and will feel less contentious during today's woot.

What's the drinking window for this 2008 Sauvignon Blanc? Looks like a great deal from JanKris, although I can't remember their last offering...

Wow, nice to see Texas as the only red light in a sea of white on the map. A case is too much for me right now, otherwise, I would possibly be in on this.

@mibuwolf83: The last JanKris offering was May 8th for a case of Paso Robles Picaro. I don't think the 2008 Sauv Blanc has been on WW yet...

http://wine.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=4991416

My trigger finger is getting a little twitchy though... this seems like a good deal. Are there any reviews?

Sauvignon Blancs don't usually benefit from cellaring. This one has been in the bottle three years, so I think it is time to drink this one now, though with this high acidity it should hang through the next year. AT $8.75/bottle, shipped, I think they are pricing it to move

The description says "tropical fruits, lyche, pineapple, melons, pasion fruit". That will be a nice counterpoint style to the citrusy SBs out there. The 7.1 g/L acidity will mean a beautifully tart/crisp wine. Looks like it would pair very well with summer and fall foods.

There is absolutely no room in my cellar for a case...I wish there was, this looks like a smokin deal.

I have some questions for the winemaker or anyone familiar with the winery:
1. Description on website says "The wine was made using reductive winemaking techniques" - What does reductive mean? How is it different than other techniques? Do you boil the juice down like you're making jam?? ("Reduce the fruit by boiling with sugar for three hours or until the thermometer reaches...") Just trying to learn and get this thread on an eductaion track this morning... Pardon the attempt at humor

2. I don't see any white wine younger than an '08 on the website or in cellar tracker. Are you guys not making any more whites? Or have you been selling exclusively to restaurants?

Thanks!

Regards,

Greg

Got 2 of the JanKris 5 pack red samplers back in February 2009.

It was bad.

Really bad.

What hadn't turned was barely drinkable. Most of it went straight down the drain.

Maybe JanKris has improved since then. Maybe they haven't. But I'm not gonna get burned twice by the same wine maker.

Any specifics on RS? Saw the comment about the tartness; would also like to understand the sugar profile.

It was horrible, and it's obvious in retrospect that they were intentionally selling (objectively) bad wine to us. For that reason I will never buy JanKris wine again. They must have had some technical issue (dirty bottles, stored the wine in an attic, who knows) which ruined that inherited wine they were selling back then.

However, nobody has had anything much to say, and nothing bad, about the last offer of the Picaro. So I think while this wine might not be good it probably isn't suffering from whatever happened to that earlier stuff.

[They probably just have a total denial reputation because they decided to sell it and ruin their brand instead of take the loss on it... So now you can get potentially drinkable wine at a very low price.]

I bought the Piscaro and was pleasantly surprised, easy drinking, light, and cheap wine. Good hot weather red.

I love Sav Blanc in the heat so I went in for two deals. Hopefully will be a decent drinker too.

If my sophisticated palate doesn't appreciate this one, I can always give it to the neighbors who don't know *&^%$#@ about wine.

I bought the first JanKris
"back in the day" and liked it well enough that I did their wine club for a bit (and got some really great stuff for a very reasonable wine club fee). I missed the "bad, bad, BAD" 2009 debacle, but did jump at the 2005 Picaro that was just up and the one bottle I've had so far was extremely good QPR for an $8 bottle of wine; excellent daily drinker and better than anything you'd pick up at the grocery for under $10-$12.

Back from Europe and wow....a new woot web format...not crazy about it, hopefully it grows on me.

At any rate, I do love a good Sauvignon Blanc, but not the grapefruit/grass bombs coming from the Auzzies, NZ, and Napa. This doesn't have that descriptor, but no room for a case.

I enjoyed some 2007 Domaine de la Perrière Sancerre last evening, a very good wine (especially given the plonk I was drinking in Europe!).

Just got my case of JanKris Winery 2005 Paso Robles Picaro. I would not take another chance on JanKris as well. I won't even give this stuff away; that would be embarrassing.

Seems to be quite a bit of contrary statements regarding the quality of wine coming from this winery. As someone who has purchased quite a bit of wine from woot and rarely been disappointed I have a question. Usually I rely on this forum but in a case like this I am torn. Thus the question-- does someone like WineDavid or another Woot staff member taste everything that is put up for sale here? Or does Woot just have a relationship with some of these wineries and those on the fringe of the quality scale have some winners and apparently some real losers. If the former is true and everything gets sampled before being put up for sale I would be much more inclined to take part in this offer. Someone from Woot care to comment? And I am not asking for tasting notes from such a person. Just the acknowledgement that someone thought this wine worth selling.

Whatever happened to the wine rats? It seems to me that when offering a case of a single wine, especially one from a winery with a tarnished reputation, rattage would be ideal...

Just sayin' that I would have tried it and reported my thoughts which may have helped some pull the trigger - or not.

The more appropriate question is do they get to randomly select multiple bottles from the stuff they will be shipping, or does the winery get to provide it? Because the bottle they drink could have anything in it, or just not be one of the 'affected bottles.'

With the 2/2009 debacle if you got the bad wine you KNEW you got the bad wine, no wishy-washy 'maybe my palate isn't as sensitive' type indecision. It was dreadful!

And most of us that are still here talking about it, we've bought TONS (or TONNES in one case) of WW wine. I've only gotten BAD wine twice- this and some of the Havens.

Both were wines of questionable provenance being liquidated by someone other than who made them. (And there is subsequently little doubt that the sellers did it on purpose...)

yes, the wines are tasted and the selection process is very involved.

these wines are a drink now wine that has solid QPR. but it's a low price, so factor that in.

the original JanKris issue was real and bad (and thankfully rare). what we determined was that ~ half a pallet of the designated wine was compromised when being stored by the winery. Completely ruined. if you got some of that wine (like Mother did, again sorry Mother) it was absolutely undrinkable - putrid.

it took us a long time to decide to work with jankris again. but new owners, assurances of quality control, several tastings and promise of a screaming deal ruled the day.

we stand by the decision.

Thanks WineDavid. Exactly the response I was looking for. As I said in my earlier post my disappointment with wine woot purchases have been indeed rare and in those instances more a case of probably unrealistic expectations given the price point I am usually purchasing at. In for one.

I have been waiting for SB to sappear on Woot, but based on the very mixed reviews I am going to sit on my hands. WD, thanks for clearing up the discussed issue w/ the winery, that helps, but I am going to sit this one out.

Actually waiting for Pedroncelli to put up a case of their SB....will jump on that immediately.

BTW, open 2 bottles of Pedroncelli Sangiovese on the patio Sat. nite w/ friends over grilled pork tenderloin and roasted brocolli. After allowing it to breathe for an hour I was kicking mysely in the rear for not buying two cases of the Pedroncelli mixed red back in early May. Won't make that mistake again!

I find this difficult to believe. I have made exactly two winewoot purchases and have been disappointed by both. The first was a sampler from Mosaic vineyards that was mediocre at best. The second was a 4-pack of 2008 Wellington Le Pique-Nique Dry Rosé that was absolutely horrible with a strong vinegar note. I have not been bold enough to pull the trigger since, especially after reading so many mixed reviews for the lower-priced offerings on this site.

You represent the vast minority of us here.

There is also a different aspect to wine that doesn't exist with say, TVs -- personal taste. Just because you dislike a wine doesn't make it a mediocre or a bad wine. It just means you didn't like it. As highbrow as this is going to sound, it may be better for you to stick to cheap, grocery store wine which generally has a bit more sugar which makes it more appealing to the masses.

Very kind of you. I'm in Hong Kong this week at VinExpo Asia Pacific (I know, it's a tough life) but if you call the winery and have them add your email address to your account you'll be able to order direct. Wooter's who've wooted with us get Club pricing for ever and ever. (right now you'd get 30% of 12 bottles or more on the SB and 1/2 price shipping.

QFT.

I have great confidence in the offerings here. The purchases I've made that I haven't enjoyed have not been bad wines, they just weren't my style. In particular, in my early days at wine.woot I picked up some bold oakey buttery California chardonnays that I didn't care for one bit. Other people who liked that style thought they were excellent and were astounded at the price I paid for them. As I've gotten a better handle on how to relate my preference to the winemaker info and the discussions, I haven't wound up with anything I didn't enjoy.

There have probably been a couple of situations in which I purchased something from wine.woot that might not have been much of a savings. Except when I buy from wine.woot I feel that I'm not taking the same risk that I would buying from a wine store or some other venue that might be offering that wine at that price. I can go to Trader Joe's for example and look at the selections on the shelf. Some of the selctions I know will be very good, and some will be insipid. But I won't know which are which. At wine.woot that's not an issue. I know that if it fits my taste preferences and my budget, it won't be a waste of money.

I am going to pass this one as well, but not because of the mixed reviews. Instead, I'm passing because JanKris also makes Viognier and I'm hoping they will offer that as well.

Also, I passed my Professional Engineering Exam and I went ahead and bought a half-case of Bordeaux as a present to myself. :-)

Any chance the Viognier will show up here Woot?
