Since I've spent a couple of days thinking about this, and reading other people's reactions, I guess this isn't truly a first impression, but I'll try. Except for the extremely stark whiteness (don't like that very much), it didn't look all that different at first glance. Then I discovered I had to click a button just to read the description of the offer. Then more clicks necessary to obtain information I'm used to seeing without so much effort.
I get it; it's the same as my local supermarket reorganizing the store as soon as I've memorized the location of everything I want. They want to take you to new, unexplored territory, hoping you'll see something you haven't even thought about, but now that they've shown it to you, you have to have it. I don't mind that so much as some of the others who have commented, especially on some of the other Woot sites. Of all the Woot pages, I probably spend about 90% of my time on WIne.woot, so they can pretty much do what they want with the others, and it won't affect me much.
However, there is one point I feel quite strongly about: they're missing a valuable opportunity here. As Wine.woot has gradually morphed from one deal a week to one a day, losing the labrat program in the process, as well as forcing people into a quick decision, often without the benefit of winemaker input, it has lost some of its charm for me.
With the institution of Woot+, there's a chance to get that back, if they want to. People have been lamenting the loss of informed dialogue amongst other wooters and the winemakers about the wines being offered, because they've been here one day, and gone the next. Now we again have a few days to think things over and weigh our decisions with the benefit of shared information, provided there's a convenient vehicle for that sharing. In my opinion, it's vital to have a thread attached directly to each of these offers, just as there is to the main offer, instead of sending everyone to the "World of woot wine" for a separate thread. Since most of us will be going there for our own purposes, anyway, they won't be losing any of the merchandising aspects of all that clicking. Also, there's time for labrat participants to weigh in on one of these offers, so maybe it's time to bring that program back in some form.
Now that I've dealt with that, can we please have the time stamps back?
Can we please have the ability to access another wooter's comments like we used to do? It makes it so much easier to track information.
I'm not fond of the new fonts, the additional advertising, the cross referencing to social networking sites, and especially not the Twitter comments, but after 45 years of teaching, I've developed some ability to ignore the things I don't like, so I can live with those, and most of the other changes.
I think I like separate lists of purchases, instead of having everything merged into one big list, but I'm still thinking about that one.
Just keep offering good wines at good prices, especially ones that I can't get anywhere else, and I'll keep buying.
