2010 Tobin James Merlot Made in the Shade, my first of anything from Tobin.
Rather reminds me of the thing hanging outside Kyle's door; the logo, not the wine.
Too fruity for me, and seems obviously oaked to excess, but I could see how this may appeal to some.
Is it just too young?
Don't know what to expect here..

Same logo. We like the logo just for what it looks like. SWMBO likes Tobin wines quite a bit and I like some of them on occasion, though. They're all fruit and oak. It's not too young; that's the style.

End of 2010 Podera Santa Lucia Mascherone (90% Merlot/10% PV), form La Marche in Italty. Lovely light bodied and delicious. Unfortunately not the PV-based wine it was sold as, though.
Then on to 2007 Olek-Mery Chinon. Wow. Earth and more earth, with some twigs and leaves mixed in. Just deliciousness.

It was a real beauty. Nice fruit still, beautiful nose. It went perfect with a filet. It had some power left in it as well.

I'm really sad that I don't have any more but I'll just keep my eyes open for more smokin deals on excellent wine like that bottle.

For me the last bottle, a few weeks ago, was a bit tired, but I've got over a half case left so I hope it was an exception.
Need to sample another one soon to see if it's drink-up time.
Kyle?

Working on a WineSmith '06 cab and some Point Reyes blue right now.

I thought it was really nice. Opened up after about an hour. I'm not sure it's going downhill anytime soon, but I'm not sure it'll get better.

Various volatiles are still running around an hour in making it far from smooth. That said there is a surprising concentration and jam mines to this wine. Looking forward to sipping it and seeing it evolve over the evening

Alcohol on the nose, and not much more. Thin. Disappointing.

Kyle and I were wondering if you had any TN's from our visit to the Halcon patio... I can't find mine, but that's not unusual, I was an understudy of Sparky.

Indeed! I've tasted the Esquito but I'd love notes on the '12 Prado and a comparison to '11 if you can.

2010 Bray Barbera...tastes like violets and bacon. My one complaint is that the flavors don't seem very integrated, just going in two different directions.

Last night:

2012 Halcón Alturas (barrel sample)
97% Syrah, 3% Viogner co-fermented
pH: 3.76 T.A.: 0.66 g/100mL Alcohol: 13.5%

Opened this yesterday, tasted it, and enjoyed more tonight after being stored in the fridge. The nose was a bit muted, but smelled as I expected, dark fruits, spice, not sweet at all, etc. The palate was nice fruit with some chalky tannins. Really solid structure, but kind of awkward. Tonight, this wine is showing its fruit first and it is really nice. Full and just a tiny bit more lush than the '10 and '11. This is going to be my favorite of the vintages, I'm fairly certain. I think that time in the barrel will add a bit more structure and the added time will allow it to piece together. Really excited about this one after my glass tonight.

Last few days with the mother in town:
-2010 Podere Santa Lucia Mascherone. Rimmerman sold it as a Petit Verdot-based wine, but it's 90% Merlot. A delicious 90% Merlot, but not as advertised. Semi-grumble.
-2007 Olek-Mery Chinon. Probably my favourite Garagiste buy yet. Earth and leather and earth and a hint of bell pepper. So awesome.
-Gjelina with 2008 Boillot Volnay 1er Cru les Chanlins
-Osteria Mozza with 2004 Baroncino Brunello di Montalcino (sitting next to Demi Moore and Kiefer Sutherland)
-2007 Chateau Bianca Cellar Select for happy hour. Delicious.
-2006 Buena Vista Carneros Pinot, Ramal Vineyard. Delicious for a picnic at the Getty
-2010 Harvest Moon Pinot Noir
-2001 Mazzocco Matrix (they had just changed the branding and were selling this off for a song. Wish I had bought more)
-Quady Elysium Black Muscat

Laurello Vineyards 'Rodavi' from Ohio of all places. Back label describes it as a 'Super-Tuscan' (12.5 alc). I had no idea there were any Tuscans in Ohio, let alone Super ones.

Quite a week of vino! You can drink at the Getty? Awesome. Is this the same Mazzocco that was acquired by Wilson an turned into an over-priced Zin factory in Dry Creek Valley?

Hmmm what's scary is that I even said that, being that I am a well known killer of young wines (what the heck is happening to me?) That being said it is really delicious after an hour or so of air..drink up!
