So I have my fancy dancy MacBook Pro and love it. Today I videotaped my Life Skills kiddoes reading descriptions of the monsters and set about to do the editing. I have a nice SONY Handycam. Yes, it has age but takes marvelous video. Problem: the download cables will not attach to wonderful computer! Fortunately, I still have the old one and was able to upload everything and do the edits and add some titles. I am currently loading it to a portable drive so that hopefully I will be able to use my new computer to show the video tomorrow. I may just have to resort to the old one. Just so long as it's plugged in, it should work! But I want to go to bed but this stupid thing says another 20 minutes! I guess I'll go and do ablutions.

Edit: Success on the movie front! Now to make sure that I have the proper connector for the projector at school! Oh, and it looks great on the new computer!

yes, well these are college kids or those still residing in Mom's basement. there's not a lot of disposable income there.

Kinda like that, is that how it works?

Why so quick to the Kindle Fire? I like some of the Amazon features--the cloud, etc. that the Nook doesn't have. However, the nook seems to have excellent features, more memory, etc. just no cloud-type service yet.

I've had my hands on the fire. It was nice. There's also this. Plus I don't trust book stores to not go out of business.

Edit: also keep in mind that since your Amazon books aren't all stored locally, there's no reason to worry about memory unless you're going to go crazy with apps/movies. Plus if you have Amazon Prime you get access to Amazon on Demand for movies and Tv shows with it for free AND the new lending library feature they have for a bunch of books.

Bow--I hear ya. But free=$80/yr for amazon prime.

I was ready to go with the fire, and probably will, but the nook really seems like a great option as well, and since I'm already a B&N member (we have a huge B&N bookstore about a mile from our house), it's only $25 more, and I have a physical place to go for help if needed.

Oh, "old" docs are never good when they reappear, are they? Getting it done the 30th and then maybe being ready for Christmas just seems so much more reasonable than getting it done Monday and thinking you'll be home for Thanksgiving.

Hang in there Mark. Glad your sis is helping out. Some of that wine in your locker can help you over some of the frustrations of elder care.

But do they actually help you out in the store or shrug their shoulders and then offer to send it in for repair. Cause that would kind of suck.

Cheaper than Netflix for the year and I think they'll end up with the bigger library. Plus the lending library feature could be worthwhile. Worth the 80 bucks a year I think. I don't know about cost of books on Kindle vs. Nook. Never compared. My tablet has a Kindle app so that's my default. Though, that's another good point. With WhisperSync you can start reading on the fire, then if you're somewhere you don't have the fire you just pull up the Kindle app on your iphone and you can pick up where you left off on the Fire, then when you get home, back to the Fire, where you pick up where you left off on your phone. Maybe the Nook does that also, I dont' know, but it's a nice feature I use all the time.

Also, the rumour is Amazon is building a phone. Dunno bout that one.

I'd like an app where I can scan the barcode in the store and it instantly shoots me to the Amazon page so I can price match and read reviews. Google Shopping kinda does that, but I want an Amazon specific app. I dont' think Amazon Shopper does that. anti-competitive issues maybe?

Edit: um yeah, they do have that, Amazon Price Check, nevermind, nothing to see here, just bowtie being bowtie.

I went in to look at the Nooks when I was trying to decide between it and the Kindle, and just wasn't impressed with any of the Nooks.

Also, as someone pointed out, I think you have to send it in for any service, unless you are exchanging it as defective. I doubt any of the B&N employees I've met could handle the repair.

And like bowtie, I'm not sure how much longer B&N will have stores ... look at Border's.

Ahh, I like the idea of paying for Amazon Prime and giving up Netflix. That's brilliant. I would also bet that Amazon would end up with more movies long term.

It's almost become a no brainer. You get the free shipping, the movies and tv on demand (though not the entire library, I don't think), plus the lending library for books (which seems to have a half decent selection). I'm tempted to sign up for prime even though we qualify for Mom Prime (which is shipping only) for free cause we get our diapers on Amazon.

All the talk about Kindles and Nooks is making me want one!! We got my mom the "regular" Kindle and she loves it... Me, I want more bells and whistles!!! (of course the kids will know how to operate it better than I will).

On a positive note, I was successful in finding a really nice leather couch at a store that gets estate furniture. I can't afford a new leather couch (it would cut into my wine fund) but this one is definitely a higher end piece! For the same price of the piece of crap I bought 2 years ago that is totally fallen apart.....

got to get back to getting the house ready!! and some wine!! Happy Friday!!!

She went in for the Nuclear study, and hip surgery was postponed til the 30th.

Which is just as well, as one of her fillings fell out last night at dinner. So she needs to go to the dentist on Monday or Tuesday.

One of the deciding factors in waiting was that Dad is still feeling under the weather, and she was worrying about him.

OK, techies, got a question for you...

For the most part, I'm pretty happy with my main computer. It still has fairly decent performance, would like a new monitor, but that can wait, as it does work pretty well. The only problem I'm running in to is that the main HD is pretty much full--140MB. I do have my files backed up on a secondary HD using the Windows backup program, and am running Windows Vista (I know, I know). Is there an easy way of freeing up space on my HD so the computer performance will improve? Is there an easy way to move my documents, itunes library, etc. to the secondary HD?

I'm currently installing the Seagate Dashboard Network Storage System (bought a 2TB system from CostCo), so, just in case I screw something up I hopefully won't lose it all. : )

When theres that little left it kinda sucks cause you ned 15% left to defrag and that's the easy answer.

Basically, check your temp folder, your downloads folder, your picture folder, unused programs. That kinda thing

Cleared a little space. There is a huge HP setup file that I can't delete. Speaking of HP, I'm amazed that I rarely ever print in color, but boy do I go through them when I do, or, they expire. What a joke.

Got the seagate backup to be recognized through the internet, but no, I can't find it through the home network...frustrating...

In System Tools there's also a program called disk cleanup, it'll scan the drive and let you know how large some of the temp folders are, and you can select what you want to delete.

Other option you might want to consider is upgrading to a SSD, which is something I might do if I find a good deal during black friday sales. It's supposed to be a good way to make your computer feel much more responsive without going a full upgrade path.

140MB?????? MB?????? When did you buy it? In 1990??

Really, if you are happy with the old system, best is to buy a new hard drive to replace the old one. This also allows you to keep the old drive as a backup.

Basically, put the new drive in place of your 2nd drive. Use a disk cloning software (like Acronis True Image Home 2012) to clone your C: drive to the new drive.

Then shut down, pop the old drive out, pop the new drive in place of it, and then put your old 2nd drive back in.

It should boot off the new drive.

How large is your 2nd drive? Once you get the network drive working, you can always use that for data files, if it is large enough.

As to the connection issue, you might need to temporarily disable your AV's firewall to let the software connect out to Seagate.

SSD is a good way to go, but you have limited disk storage on most of them. As long as you keep only the OS on it, and put all your data files on a 2nd drive, then it's fine.
