Ok, in for a case. Couldn't resist at the price, and I figure if it isn't a favorite I'll just throw a party! Excited based on the reviews though.

I have a wine "newbie" question. Why is this type of grape (Cab Franc) considered a blending grape? What are the attributes that allow it to not only be a good 'binder' for merlots and cab savs, but also allow it to be a varietal that I can drink solo?

Why do they recommend shipping to a business address?

I really think that because the wine has to be signed for they figure a business is usually open when delivered and someone can sign for it. If you miss the delivery at home it causes all sorts of problems trying to get the wine picked up or redelivered the next day. I know because yesterday I spend much of the day waiting for a wine shipment and felt that I could not leave for fear of missing it. Fortunately it didn't come too late in the day.

Because of the certainty of someone being there to receive it. The package requires an adult signature, so it can't be simply left on the doorstep, nor can it be received by a child. So the chances of making a successful delivery are greater with a business address.

That said, if your personal situation is such that receiving a package at your home address isn't likely to create a problem. there's no issue with shipping to your house.

yea, it's about getting the (21 +) signature on the first delivery attempt.

Very good question. From what I know and have learned, there are some varietals (Cab Franc, Petite Verdot, Petite Sirah, Mouvedre, etc.) that don't show well solo, or so some people (used to) think. That being said, there are a large number of us here who are PSychos. However, PS was used, up until fairly recently, s a "body-adding" grape only. A member of this community loves CF (his blog is called the cab franco files), even though CF is primarily a minority potion of Bordeauxs. One of the woot cellars wines was predominately mouvedre; and after some bottle time, it was quite lovely.

So, as wine makers get braver, and wine drinkers become more educated, the market for "interesting" wines is growing. And hopefully will continue to do so. Sometimes, these wine experiments fail (obviously), but I think there is always something to be learned, even if you didn't like the wine.

Keep asking newbie questions. We all started somewhere and these forums are a treasure trove of information, thanks to the winery participation and the generally wine-erudite members (Sparky not included).

Many thanks for all of this information. I truly do appreciate it. I've been drinking wine (more seriously) for about 1.5 years, and I'm still trying to understand the complexities of it. Understanding tid bits of information, like you have provided, aids me in that education. There is a great deal to learn! If you know of any good pointers or sites, let me know. I'm all ears!

And thanks Wine.Woot for the "Lab Rat" concept, it helps a lot!

$16 before tax at my local Total Wine (Atlanta). This is a good deal if you are still on the fence.

Read the below thread, go to local W.W. gatherings, ask questions, and drink more! (For tasting purposes, obviously. )

Hmmmm. Salami Swami predicts a Summerland Trio ( Rhone Blend). Too bad their PS is sold out.

Edit: 49% Syrah, 21% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre blend. (aka GSM)

and now I should probably pick up some of this lovely wine. I've been sitting on the fence all weekend about it. Finances vs a good deal vs too much wine already. Ah, the heck with it, I can drink more while watching the US Open.

Ooops .... I meant Bodegas Paso Robles. Spanish varietals. Forgot he might go up against Nadal of Spain as #2 seed.

Similar story, FredEx reported a label being printed Sept 8, expected delivery was today (Sept 15). Checking on the FedEx site though, nothing has shipped. What gives?

Informal lab rat report here.

My shipment arrived yesterday. We had some with dinner last night.

I enjoyed it very much. Strong aromas of berries and leather. Deep garnet color, and strong legs.

Open and fruity up front, I found it ready to drink without decanting or aeration. The flavor continued solidly through the finish. No heat and I thought it very well-balanced.

We had it with grilled T-bone steak with a dry rub made of freshly cracked pepper, freshly ground cumin, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and sugar, applied liberally after the steaks were turned. The wine held up extremely well with the steak. A very full-bodied cab franc.

As an everyday drinker I thought this was a great value; certainly better than almost anything I've ever picked up a supermarket for less than $10. I would probably have gone in for more when this appeared in the woot-off yesterday morning had my shipment arrived before the offer.

Mine showed up on the 14th. There's a good chance I got it so early because I live in portland, and we've had ridiculously cold weather all of a sudden for the season (our summer lasted about three weeks and then, apparently, committed suicide).

I opened my first bottle tonight; I enjoyed it (aerated pours, no decanter), a little more vanilla than I'm usually fond of but not enough to overpower it, decent fruit. I was about to call it fair to decent until I double checked the price; at $9.25/bottle, it's pretty damned good. So not jumping up and down about it, but I definitely feel like I got my money's worth, if not moreso.

One question for someone else who ordered this, as someone unfamiliar with the style--is this typical of a Cabernet Franc? If not, how is it different?

My previous experiences with cab franc are pretty limited, but we do greatly enjoy the cab franc produced by Facelli Winery here in Washington.

In comparison with other cab francs I've had this one is bolder and more forward. Cesare noted that in his lab rat report, and I certainly agree.

I have not received mine here in Illinois yet or had the tracking info updated. But I don't think it is a big deal. This summer, the delivery dates have been between 9 to 14 days after the posting of the "Shipment information sent to FedEx" in the tracking info from fedex.

This one posted on 8 Sept. So it would not be out of the ordinary if the delivery date ends up as 22 Sept.

I also ordered this Hahn Estates 2007 Cab Franc and have not received it. Fed Ex shows and tracking # and thats it. Any suggestions? I am new to Woot! and not sure.
