Agree. The app is better than the Kindle itself. (Only issue is that it automatically named my device. Since it is my wife's Kindle account that we use, so we can share books, the Touchpad is in her name. And I can't see how to rename it.)

I got the 32GB, so it was $150. Still a great deal.

Really? You've used a newer Kindle? I couldn't stand the short battery life and 10x weight disadvantage of reading with the iPad.

Not to mention eInk is much easier on the eyes...

I have a newer Kindle. Agree that the eInk is easier on the eyes, but Touchpad screen is not that bad. I like the page turning, and lack of screen flicker that the Touchpad has. And it is even heavier than the iPad, so I will have to see what happens when I read more than a few pages. It would take a little longer for the weight to be an issue. So you probably have a good point there.

I was tempted by the B&N Color Nook, but their page turning wasn't good. Plus that it would be harder to read in sunlight, unlike the Kindle. And since one of the reasons I wanted it was to read on the beach, it eliminated itself.

Should get a tablet soon, but keep waiting for that Notion Ink Adam ... which I may give up on for one of the Android based units. It might be out, but I wanted to wait to see how it does.

You'd probably rather have one of these, although it might be worth keeping an eye out for a better price.

I FINALLY left school at 5 PM today. We had a high temp of 89 degrees and the humidity was over 55 %. It was unbearable in my room, but I had to get everything ready for the kiddos on Tuesday. Whoever designed windows that push outward so that the "wind" cannot get through the window and into the room ought to be shot! These do have screens though. Our old windows were 7 foot sliders with no screens, but at least we could breathe and get a cross breeze!

Good call. I really like that bottle and producer. Well-priced, too. Normally somewhere in the mid-20's, but one place has it on sale for $11 right now, which is an out-and-out steal, maybe even a better deal than the new Cameron Hughes PS looks like at $11.70/bottle shipped.

Can I say how I hate you for bringing that Aaron PS to D&D? Cause now I have to run down to Hi-Time in Costa Mesa to buy it. They have his '08 for $29 and his '07 Swell (splash of Zin & Syrah) for $18.

Along with the '08 Crusher for $13!

I'm an enabler. Or a dealer. Or both! Aaron's one of the few wine clubs I'm in (that and Turley... I occasionally order some Scholium, but, like Turley, it's usually cheaper on winebid!). But please, join Aaron's club... and tell him that it's all my fault :-)

His Swell Rose is awesome. I have 3 cases set aside for the wedding. And I'm either going to be serving the Heretic (if I can get a good volume at that price!) or the Cameron Hughes (bought 2 cases) too... But the Crusher is a hell of a backup as well.

So.

I have had an interesting couple of weeks...

I traveled to Germany early last week for a business trip. Checked into the hotel, pulled out my laptop to get to email and stuff and...dead.

It wouldn't even boot up to the BIOS. I tried reseating the one memory card I could easily reach, but nothing. The screen would light up, in an uneven white haze, but that was it. So, no computer. For the entire trip.

I could get to one of my work email accounts through my smartphone, plus surf the web, but I couldn't access my PassWordSafe (it's on an IronKey USB stick, and I had nothing to plug it into), so I could't log into any web sites, including Woot. Glad they had placed me on the unlimited foreign data plan.

Then, on my way back I was trapped in Frankurt for 24 hours I hadn't planned on. We had boarded the airplane, which was due to take off at 2, but there was a problem with the APU, and they finally gave up and told us to come back next morning and they'd try to take off at 10. They, however, did put us up in a hotel for the night and fed us dinner and breakfast (it was a mechanical issue, which means they owe us. The last time that happened to me (same flight, but ~3 years ago), it was a weather related delay, and we were on our own). They basically escorted the lot of us through the airport, looking for a immigration booth that was open, and on to the bus that took us to the hotel. While waiting for the buss to pick us up, I got a text message from united that they would be taking of at 2:40, not 10:00. Oh, and no checked luggage was given back to us, so I ended up having to rinse my one shirt out in the bathroom sink with no stopper. And, remember, no computer, either.

So, I get home, and start to set up my replacement work computer, along with a personal notebook I just hadn't got around to setting up. Turns out the password on the replacement work computer had expired, so I had to give it to the IT department to reset.

Got it reset, and was setting it up. See, I was having to catch up on the work from the previous week I hadn't gotten to, setting up the replacement computer, transferring files (the hard disk from the old computer was working), doing the stuff for this week that I needed to do, get ready for my next trip next week, and basically not getting much sleep.

Yesterday, they cancelled my trip next week (to Korea), and decided I needed to go to San Diego instead. So, on top of all that, I needed to get my Travel Authorization filled out, submitted, and approved, and get my tickets booked. And, Monday is a holiday and I fly out Tuesday. Plus, it's a different kind of prep, so all my previous prep for next week was down the drain.

And, to top it off, the replacement computer was acting really funny (hanging during windows updates, etc.) so they just took it away from me today and are reinstalling the OS and software; it should be ready early Tuesday before I fly. And of course, I will not have time to recopy my files back on to it.

So, I just now have time to go through the two week backlog here on wine.woot. Fortunately, my personal netbook isn't acting funny (other than a "this copy of Windows is not Genuine" scare I got a few hours ago; fortunately I found a tip on the web that made that go away legitimately). I'll probably be commenting on stuff that's that old, but hey, better late then never. I think.

Gonna be interesting to see what they offer them for.

I've heard this is to flush out the supply chain for the parts for the device; all the suppliers were mighty upset they were given zero warning. HP makes a run to finish up the parts backlog, and sells them off.

Someone estimated the BoM cost of the devices is close to $300 (the screen alone costs close to $70) so HP is taking a bath on this. OTOH, they at least get something out of them, rather than just trashing the parts.

It just sounds like something Woot might have been interested in.

Bummer. I hate to say it, but did you try leaving the battery out? Because when those go dead, sometimes the laptop won't work unless you leave it out and just run on the cord. Which defeats the portability, but hey, it runs. And you can always buy a new battery.

And I think the SanDisk Cruzer USB has a feature that allows you to copy your data from one system and use it on another system without copying it to the hard drive. Won't help now, but maybe next time.

Good luck on the travels. Are you in SD on next Saturday or flying home before then?

Edit: And don't get me started on August. Worst month ever.

Oh, I took the battery out several times. It was full; the status light on it was showing full, if nothing else. Plus, the screen was lighting up; it just wasn't showing anything.

Choir eternal, and all that.

And, I'm talking about Gigs of data. More than 100GB, actually. Most of which I already had backed up, but I still have to get it copied to the new system.

The company name is GitHub. They have a variety of octocats that they use as logos if you dig deep enough and I'm probably violating some copyright of theirs, but I will gladly tell anyone who asks that it is theirs. They do web hosting, particularly open source hosting using the Git repository.
