I was interested in this until I read the comment about choc covered cherries. I love chocolate and wine, especially port. I hate chocolate covered cherries. Are these similar in taste ?

Huh. I kept the port ones around for at least 8 mos before I finished off the last 3 or 4 during a cleaning spree... and they were still fine. YMMV. They certainly won't get any better with age, though!

I think they are refering to consistency more than taste, ya know, liquid.

Congrats to me! This is my first Wine.Woot purchase. By the sounds of it, these things are amazing, so I thought I'd give them a try. The girlfriend, my parents, and her parents will most likely enjoy these. I'll have to try a couple too of course.

I got these in 2007 and split the collection into Christmas gifts--all were given rave reviews. And that was at $39.99 +$5 shipping, so this is a great deal. Glad I got in before they sold out.

Oh, and not to add fuel to the hfcs fire, but some people do have a fructose/hfcs dietary intolerance, so it's a fair question outside of the debate.

Edit: The truffles made me go black! (and I'll never go back...) :-) Whee!

How long do you think they will last... would like to give in March and May as gifts.
What's the take on placing them in the fridge for a short time?

radcoregirl wrote:Hmm. I know this is not relevant to the current conversation, but I figured the good people at wine.woot would be able to help me. My mother recently gave me a bottle of 1989 Pierre Jouet Brut champagne...
Any Suggestions on what I should do with it, such as save it, drink it, or just get rid of it?

Radcoregirl, Below is a response from Perrier-Jouët regarding your 1989 Brut. Supports the general consensus to open this up and enjoy now. Hopefully you can get some foie gras! The 5/10 rule is very sound advice as well. IMO

(from Frédérique at Perrier-Jouët)

Dear Madam,

We thank you for your message and the interest brought towards our Company.

Further to your request for information, we are pleased to confirm that you
may enjoy this bottle if it has been kept in good conditions of storage,
i.e. laid down, in the darkness and at a constant temperature and if you
like old champagnes.
However this cuvée would probably have some developed aromas and flavours
and the gold colour would be darker.
It could be served very fresh and paired with a foie gras.

Please note that we recommend to keep a non vintage champagne for 5 years
and a vintage one for about 10 years. Passed this time, champagne is
changing, getting more mature fragrances.

For your information, please note that the current vintage is 1999.

Should you need further information do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours faithfully,

We stored ours in the fridge from day 1 and they lasted 6 weeks (when they were all gone). Based on the last one, they would have been fine for at least another month.

Can wine.woot ship to APO/FPO addresses? I know normal woot can, but I don't see the option here. I don't see any reason these can't be sent overseas since they are not in glass bottles or require a signature upon receipt?

edit: i tried switching my address to "armed forces europe" in my account, but when I went to buy it, my address switched to "alabama". Not quite the same.

I would really like to be able to get these overseas. I don't think my parents would be able to keep them until I got home this summer...

Please spare yourself the disappointment in buying these. The inside is nothing like you think it would be. It's pure liquid, nothing sweet about it. Not even good ports or cabernets, the insides are disgusting. We tried one from each box before throwing out each box.

Notes taken, esp coming from a 4yr woot vet.
Most here have favorable views. Maybe the "sweetness" isn't such a desirable/required thing with these truffles... per those who have bought, and those deciding to buy.
Anyway, I'm still on the fence(not because of the sweet factor), but because of my so-called budget of buying fine wines.
~although this is a great deal- esp Valentines Day coming up~

edit: Egads, here's hoping my SO doesn't see this deal. She'd be disappointed if I don't order.

So I decided to open up my box of port-filled truffles tonight. When you crack the cellophane wrapping off the box, you get the sweet, sweet scent of dark chocolate escaping to flood your senses. Open up the top, and there's 9 beautiful grapenuts of chocolate sitting there waiting to be eaten. Select one... take a sniffy-sniff - gorgeous dark chocolate. You can smell it's a quality chocolate, probably about 65% dark.

I will attempt one truffle of each method - decapitation and pop-the-whole-thing. And since I'm impatient, pop-the-whole-thing is first up.

They're about an inch in diameter, so it's not a big deal to pop them. Pop and bite, and the port comes flowing out. It's sweet, mostly from the chocolate, and tastes like raspberry and cherry. As the chocolate melts, the flavor combination is just rich and delicious.

Ok, decapitation... where's the napkin...

Bite off the top of the chocolate and savor the dark chocolate... yum. Drink the port. Yeah, it's a little plain. Still raspberry and cherry, maybe a touch of smokiness. Not nearly as sweet, so definitely the sweetness comes from the chocolate. Finish off the chocolate - rich, smooth, melty... It's good, but I definitely prefer the all-at-once method instead. You get a fuller, happier flavor.

Agreed, the wine inside isn't exactly your top-notch wine, but it doesn't need to be. The chocolate is definitely quality enough, and it's a solid treat. And oh yeah, 2g of fiber per truffle Now THAT is a delicious way to get your daily fiber!

Many thanks for a detailed perspective.
Are these of a previous offering(from woot)? Or did you "somehow" get these recently(from woot)?
I'm seriously considering this deal(mainly for the SOs' in my life).
Btw- Go RedWings. If not, then I'll go BlackHawks... my second fav.
Oh, and the Cards in the NFL- just cause Curt Warner and the underdog thang... although I've always liked/respected the Steelers(another blue collar team).
