Speaking of the Tri, I just continued with some Tri3 opened a couple of days ago and recapped with Ar. Quite a bit of pressure build up in the bottle, seemingly from secondary ferm. Seems just a touch effervescent now. Any others notice this? Just the higher RS kicking in and allowing additional fermentation?

2007 VJB Mendocino Barbera. Delicious. Started off slightly musty (which I like) and has turned into a wonderful nose and mouthful of cherry and earth.

2004 Foggo wines Grenache.

This was the g/f and I's Favorite winemaker when we toured McLaren vale last year. His wines are superb values on the order of wellington. I have tracked down every bottle of foggo wine I could in the US and this bottle was showing beautifully. Typical raspberry Grenache fruit but no hint of alcohol heat. There was significant secondary herbal characteristics and it paired beautifully with a sweet potato, chard, goat cheese frittata.

Had SA pumpkin spice ale with Mexican food last night. Not a good choice.

1995 Ridge Lytton Springs Zin

Thursday night is as good as any! Lets just say I will be searching winebid for as many of these as I can find.

2006 White Oak Merlot. Not bad with the bone-in rib eye, beef lentil soup, carmelized brussel sprouts and other roasted veggies and potatoes.

Most people, even Zin lovers, maybe especially Zin lovers, think that's way too old for Zinfandel. You and I know they're wrong, at least some of the time.

I have not had too many other aged zins but this bottle and a 97 Ridge Geyserville I had at a party a couple of months ago are just spectaular. This bottle and the 97 are hard to explain other than they have beautiful aged characteristics but seem so fresh and young.

I will be ageing many of my zins in the future.

Tonight I will be drinking and undoubtedly lovely array of wines at jmdavidson's Chicago WOOT gathering!!!

Really a nice wine at sub $20. A killer buy at $13.
Dark brooding purple, nose has plenty of fruit, mostly raspberries. On the tongue it shines with lots of fruit but is wonderfully balanced. I did not notice the higher alcohol. On the finish the cab. Franc dominates and has that typical vegetal flavor that some love and some hate.

I really liked this wine and would purchase it again.

2009 Tyler Pinot Noir santa Barbara

1970 Chateau Montrose

Second experience with an aged Bordeaux, this one was pretty excellent (scientific term )

Cork showed seepage all the way through, but still in good shape, fill was still really high in the neck. Decanted about 20 minutes before the first sip, and got better over the 1.5 hours we drank it.

Still amazed a 42 year old wine is still drinkable, let alone even good and interesting.

I stood this one up for about two weeks, used a cork pull for the cork, and decanted with a flashlight underneath. Worked perfectly. 80% of the bottle was clear, only 20% left in the bottle when I saw the sediment with the flashlight underneath.

Great experience, now I need to try more aged Bordeaux...

Yeah, via my father-in-law. He gives us the shipment. We take it and generally open the bottles for parties and such.

Wine 1: 2006 St James Winery Norton
Alabama (my alma mater) was playing Missouri (wife's school), and this was a gift from her father. I like Norton, and while I've had good bottles that pair well with food, this was decidedly not one of those. Flat, raisined, meh.

Wine 2: NV Elegie Cote Rotie
Missouri game was ugly, so Beth decided to work in the kitchen instead of watching the game. She made a merguez and lentil "cassoulet" and asked for a better bottle of wine.
The Cote Rotie was a Garagiste $26 mystery wine that I took a flyer on a few years ago. Producer and vintage hidden, the CT reviews are all over the place. Minerally, smokey, meaty - it was a great bottle of wine, that went well with our dinner. As the evening progressed, the wine continued to evolve, but never did you get "fruit". Mmmm. Coin was flipped to see who got last glass.

My lovely wife opened the quaffmor which she enjoyed. Didn't really get much grass but loads of citrus. Finish is very acidic as well.

Good not great, but is priced well.
