FYI - try the laundry bag that is usually in the closet. That's what we use to get ice when we need to refill our cooler before leaving the hotel.

anoted wrote:So to clarify....

These are colourful waterproof plastic bags box shaped with a flat bottom that are large enough to fit a bottle of wine

And their purpose is that you put a bottle of wine (or whatever) in the bag with ice to keep the drink cool/cool the drink. Until the ice melts and you have a bottle of wine (or whatever) in a bag of water....

Am I understanding this product correctly?

Your understanding is exactly correct. I bought these in a previous woot deal and expected that they would have freezable fluid between the walls. Was quite disappointed that they are just plastic bags that you fill with ice/water to keep the bottle cold.

Didn't even think of how long it might take Woot to ship it.

BTW, has anyone used one? When you pull the bottle out, does all the ice collapse to the bottom making it impossible to reinsert the bottle? I guess it's no different than a bucket.

Yes. Yes it does.

offline999 wrote:I had the same question (also in a non-snarky way). From the description I was getting the feeling that this was something you could put in the freezer ahead of time, which would then keep your wine chilled. We've got some great gel-filled rings that slide over wine bottles for this purpose and the idea of an entire bag that did this had me about to pull the trigger.
It doesn't appear that these bags possess any sort of insulating qualities at all, just looks like a layer of thick plastic, so in the respect it can't really replace an ice bucket, which is insulated so the ice doesn't melt so quickly.
Alas, my wine.woot cherry remains intact...

Where does one find gel-filled rings that slide over wine bottles?

I have gotten a couple just for voting on the deals. Admittedly it was just by accident while using a phone, but I used them nonetheless.

I also meant to say on the summer shipping - I think you guys do have it down to an art. All my wines turned up at work 2 days ago - right during the 15 degree dip in temperatures here in the Bay Area - perfect timing - nice work!!

I also figured it must be an art - as not even the website said they had even shipped yet - mystical

hello, Bottle On Ice here!
yes it is a sturdy durable impermeable bag.
it was designed to stand up straight without support when filled up with ice water and a bottle. the product is designed for repeated use and easy fold/unfolding.
we thought it'd be a fresh take on the traditional ice bucket!

yes indeed! the bags can act as a fun temporary vase too (for events, weddings, etc)
we actually put a few fun examples of alternative uses for the product on our Bottle On Ice Facebook page.

Hello,
we are sorry you were disappointed.
the bags do not freeze, indeed they're designed for use with ice and water.
we wanted a more resistant and thicker product than the "thinner" freezable bags.
Still, the bags allow for some fun uses like:
filling them up with cold Ocean water when on a yacht, boat or just on the beach (no need for ice), to chill any bottle.

hello,
yes we agree, it's very hard to put the bottle back in if there is only ice: that's why we recommend always putting equal parts water & ice so the going in and out is easy.
Also: we actually printed a "guide" onto the side of the bag with water and ice levels for optimal enjoyment.
cheers!

I bought a set of these a little while back and love them. They fold flat for easy storing and I now have a great ice bucket for the patio, porch, poolside, etc. The easy fold/store is also nice for bringing to parties and vacations. It is a simple design, but very handy!

Dear BottleonIce,

I know you did not hire me for product development, but you should, because I am awesome. You really should consider adding a "bottle sleeve" with this bag. What I am referring to is just another really thin plastic bag that you can synch tightly around the bottle itself before putting it in the ice-bath. That way we wouldn't have to ruin the labels on our bottles just to use the bag.

You can thank me later.

Sincerely,
Potential Consumer

You'd think "specs" would include measurements. Then again, that's probably why they ended up on woot! as a threefer.

Dear North316:
we thank you now rather than later!
we love your idea and acknowledge you certainly must be a fine wine connoisseur who knows his stuff to understand labels and other fine things.
we will look into it after us small people get done packing the shipments!
and whenever we can hire we will!

It is all in the laws of thermodynamics. Freeze-able bags are the least efficient in cooling a bottle because the least surface area of the bag touches the least surface area of the bottle.

Next is ice. Cute little cubes, round or square, you still have an inefficient cooling since you still have a small surface to surface area conduction.

Best is ice water. Read the Bottle on Ice instructions and you will understand. This will chill a bottle of bubbly in 8 minutes. Huge surface area to surface area contact.

I sell these for much more at my business and they really work, as well as anything, if you JUST READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!

No, you are wrong. These are NOT made to be filled with ice, which is an inefficient conductor, but with Ice and Water, which is the most efficient way to quickly chill a bottle of wine, beer or bubbly.

FYI, freezing any product and expecting it to chill a bottle of wine is the least efficient.

By the way, Mythbusters proved this if you don't want to take my word regarding simple physics and the laws of thermodynamics...

Where the laws of thermodynamics don't apply! Gel rings don't cool bottles efficiently. This product does when one follows the instructions. Surface area to surface area contact is the key which means ice water, not ice, not freezable bags, or gel rings. Physics people!!!
