Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (4)

Just Another Manic Mondavi

Oh, those Mondavis, too modest to plaster their name all over the place.

But misapprehend ye not: Emblem is a Michael Mondavi jam, with his son and head winemaker Rob and daughter Dina pitching in to carry the family legacy forward another generation. Michael, of course, ran his dad Robert's legendary Napa winery for ten years before launching Michael Mondavi Family Estate, whence Emblem issues forth.

It's not all about the pedigree, of course. The dry 2008 growing season gave this Cabernet concentrated yet nuanced flavors of cherry, dark berry, toasted vanilla, and coffee that pair well with grilled meats and strong cheeses. Strictly speaking, you don't need four generations of winemaking tradition to craft a Cab this superb - but it sure doesn't hurt.
