Oh snap, please go away very quickly so I will not be tempted to buy you Mr. Wellington.

already at 10 years. . .how much of a drinking window is left?

Is this a fabulous deal? They are so old. Must they be drunk right away? Please forgive my "drinking window" ignorance. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Though these aren't yet listing on his website (in the library section) most other items on there are $45-50 per bottle, so I would expect the same retail price for these. This is Wellington, so at 10 years it likely has 5-10 more to go.

CellarTracker says the reserve can go to 2015, but the regular Syrah is past its prime.

YMMV.

Wow, the average scores from CT are not even close to justifying the price.

The latest comment on the 2001 indicates it might be rolling over into vinegar by now (which in that instance could have been caused by the bad cork, but who knows...they all have to go sometime).

if the 2002 had been the reserve as well, we'd be a lot closer to parity.

OK, stop it, now. I've done really well for the past couple of months, but the one-two punch of Zeppelin and Wellington is simply more than I can resist. What's next, Twisted Oak? (hint, hint...)

Provenance, provenance, provenance!
I wouldn't put much stake into that last CT comment... he mentions buying on WineBid. While a great site, it always means questionable provenance. The dried cork probably meant that the seller didn't store the bottle properly.

I have two accounts- this 'anonymous' username for commenting, as well as a 'purchasing' account which is my real name. Apologies for the white box on the left.

Also, in the interest of full disclosure- I'm ITB, selling wine for a living. None of my wines have ever been featured on Woot though, so don't fear the shilling.

Hopefully Peter will be on the boards. I would question an individual users storage, but stored by Peter I'd think would be above reproach. Still, good to hear it directly.
VERY tempted, this will give me a much better idea how my current stores may age. For that alone I'm leaning as PW is nearly always an auto-buy.

Seriously? Do people not think before they type?

The average of what CT scores? There is ONE score noted for both wines combined, so you are saying the average opinion of ONE person does not justify the price? You would be much better off saying that the lack of information on the wine does not justify the price, than blindly looking a CT rating without looking at the source.

Both these wines have held up very well. That's why we kept some this long. They are mature and don't stand to gain much from further aging (although RPM might beg to differ). I'd drink them within the next year or two, but if you really have a taste for older wines they'll probably be enjoyable for a few more years.

Indeed. That's why I added the caveat of "YMMV."

Although, I wouldn't put too much hope in a winemaker showing during a woot-off. It happens, but not often.

The 2006 PW Victory did make an appearance in Febuary of this year....maybe we'll see it again today or tomorrow. That's where I'd put my "PW-reserved" money at.

Peter, do you recall what vinyard(s) the 2002 syrah was sourced from?

And where is that port you were supposed to working out a deal on? hah

Not in this offer, but I received a bottle of the 2002 Reserve Syrah (I believe) with my wine club membership. I just drank it a few months ago and it was sublime. No notes but I do remember that the various subtleties were impressive, and I would say it had a couple years left in it.

Yup, in for a dual woot.
Thanks Peter!

Not enough 2006 Victory left for even a wootoff. Toby is opening a bottle of the 2002 Syrah as I type. Back in 5 mins. or so with a real-time description.

Now, if only they'd bring back the "Vinito del Finito".

My wife dislikes reds in general, but the VdF became her all-time favorite wine last Fall.

That stuff is gone now and was a Woot Cellars offering, so likely a one-time thing.

Come back please Peter. I am waiting to hear what the result is before pushing the button. It is hard for me to buy wine for 2 reasons right now.

1. Wine festival is in 4 days.
2. super hot days have arrive early in the high desert.

However it is hard to pass on your wine, not to mention a Syrah.

Color: Still dark, purplish hue with a garnet rim (darker and more purple thanbrick color is).
Aromas: More spice and floral than fruity. Licorice, and rose petal. Still has some cherry - blueberry like fruit. Definitely some caramel / brown sugar, but no trace of aldehydes (no sherry like aromas).
Palate: Smooth entry and mid-palate. Tannins not yet fully resolved (just a hint of astringency). Fleshy all the way through the finish - not drying out yet. Showing a hint of heat on the finish.
IMHO this is showing nice aspects of an aged wine. It's not a 20-25 year old grand cru Burgundy or Hermitage experience, but I wouldn't expect that.

Oops, double posted.

Having tasted some of Peter's old Syrah in the last Tour I know he certainly makes it to last this long or longer. Even though it's a big premium on the age, it's probably worth the price. Decisions, decisions...

Duke is bottled every August, released late September, sold out in November. We're just releasing our first ever Duchess (white blend) this week. We can't afford to sell these on w00t, so Don't ask!

Happy to buy something that I don't have to think about "should I open this yet?" Add Peter's participation and standing with this crowd, and the question becomes, "why wouldn't I buy this?"
