It's not been summer anywhere on this planet for the past 2 weeks, and just above freezing (since Woot doesn't ship anywhere that uses the metric system) is a very good temperature for shipping wine, though you might end up needing to filter out some tartrate crystals.

That said if any of the CT bunch need a bottle or two, let me know, I don't need a full triple order!

liverman wrote:In Germany, a Riesling with this residual sugar level would be a spätlese or auslese wine with 8-10% alcohol (or less).

I mixed some terminology in the above statement and wanted to point it out to those just starting to understand Riesling terminology.

The terms "spätlese" and "auslese" do not directly designate the residual sugar (sugar remaining after the winemaking is complete). They are terms that indicate the minimum ripeness of the grapes used to make the wine by measuring the sugar level in the unfermented grape juice or must (ordered in increasing levels of ripeness):
- Kabinett
- Spätlese (late harvest)
- Auslese (select harvest)
These levels are achieved by leaving the grapes on the vine for longer periods of time. See this picture from Dr. Loosen Vineyards.

If the conditions are correct, berries can be infected by a naturally occurring mold (Botrytis cinerea) which causes the water to evaporate, thereby concetrating sugar, acid and minerals in the shrivelled berries. This infection does not occur to all berries or even every year, so they are usuall reserved to make only the highest quality auslese wines levls avove auslese:
- Beerenauslese (berry selected harvest) or BA
- Trockenbeerenauslese (dried berry selected harvest) or TBA
Pictures of Riesling infected with Botrytis.

That initial sugar can either turn into alcohol or residual sugar - the winemaker chooses the balance with the winemaking techniques. The resulting wine is termed dry (trocken), medium dry (halbtrocken), medium sweet (halbsüss) or sweet (süss) depending on the amount of sugar remaining.

Dr Loosen has a great website with more articles, videos and links where you can learn more about Riesling.

I hope this is useful to those of you just starting to experience this varietal.

Regards,

Greg

Would anybody in the Twin Cities be interested in splitting this?

Ouch- we are full up on wines, in fact there are still two cases awaiting storage.

I guess it's time to drop the F-bomb into the mix for the summer. I'm in!

Apparently, there are beaucoups Woot Cellars offerings in the offing ... this can ONLY be a good thing.

This one's an odds-on favorite to be a winner for the sweet riesling folks; others have been very, very worthwhile, too.

Got my fingers crossed for some dry rieslings; some crisp, herbal Sauvigons blancs; maybe even a nice, dry rose or two, eh whot?

Summertime and the living is gooooood, of not exactly easy.

Anyone in the north Atlanta area up for a split? I simply do not have the room for five bottles. 2 or 3 is even pushing but I really want to try this.

This is one I will be giving my FedEX and UPS delivery guys to enjoy with their wives. They continue to call me when they are enroute to my place, so I gotta keep them happy.

WineDavid watches the temperatures in the various regions and manages the shipments even though we're not technically in summer shipping mode ($7).

There's a recent thread discussing shipping and WD popped in to answer.

not sure if anyone's answered this, but, the triacipedis 2010 was actually from the same company. I believe it was classified as a dry reisling though. I loved it. I think if you liked that, you couldn't go wrong here, unless you're REALLY sensetive to a little extra sweetness. If this is sweeter, I don't think it would be by much

2010 Tri wasn't dry, nor a riesling. It was almost equal parts Riesling/Chard/SB, and like half the residual sugar of this- which is still off-dry.

Not having tasted this, I would expect this to exhibit more of the floral and stone fruit notes (apricot, peach, etc.) and have that nice crisp sweet/acid thing going on, but have less of the buttery/citrus/pineappleness.

And of course be a bit sweeter tasting...

I've been on the fence on buying this wine, since I have to clue what Riesling tastes like or am not an aficionado. Yet I like the label, so...

F-Bomb this!!! I'm in for one.

I let life (you know, work, family, and other things that dare draw me away from wine.woot) get in the way and forgot about the F-Bomb until this morning. Otherwise, I would have gone in with you on the Atlanta split...maybe next time.

Mine is also still in Reno, and I'm hoping that was by design. Originally I think it said it was supposed to be delivered tomorrow. Now it says Friday. I'm in Chicago where it's been upper 80's and 90's for a few days now and Reno is 15 degrees cooler. I don't mind it taking a few days in order to chill in an air conditioned warehouse over the weekend. Eagerly waiting!!!

Same here. Shows on tracking as in Reno for the entire long weeked. Hope it is having fun there. ;)
It is possible it is in transit from Reno to the next stop - Fedex does not update until it arrives at a stop. We shall see.

My bottles arrived today. Since I was foolhardy(awesome?) enough to go in for the full amount my total number of bottles ordered was 15. They got shipped as two different packages, one of five and one of ten. Is this going to be part of the new WineWoot shipping experience as well? When there are more than 12 bottles available to buy at once they will be shipped out in two sets?

Offers are typically limited to a case so Wine.woot probably does not have boxes for more than a case.

That makes sense. The more I thought about it the more I came to the conclusion that some kind of splitting up had to be made.

I'm generally not a white kind of guy, but this stuff is sublime. Is there any way to get more? I suspect not. Can anyone recommend a commercially available Riesling that would be similar?
