Nothing on CT for this vintage yet.

Comparing past vintages...
'08 - no notes
'07 - no notes
'05 - 86 (based on 2 notes)
'04 - 86 (based on 3 notes)
'03 - 87 (based on 5 notes)
'02 - 65 (based on 2 wildly divergent notes)

So, basically, not a lot out there on this one.

I don't remember if it was a merlot, but I've had this brand before at $10 a pop from the grocery store and wasn't impressed. I didn't take any notes, but I remember being disappointed. Just my 2 cents.

It seems to be about a $10 wine based on my google search results. If you can find it locally, probably won't be a huge price difference between this and local..

Nice, easy drinking wine. The next cheapest price I found for six of this vintage is $86.89 shipped.

I feel like Don Sebastiani & Sons is to Sonoma as Hahn family winery is to the central coast. And I've never had any of their wines. Can anyone tell me if that's a fair assessment?

They haven't registered to sell in our state so heck with 'em.

Seems a fairly good deal price-wise, but even with a PS infusion, Merlot's still Merlot. I'd probably have passed anyway.

I've bought there Cab a few times just because of the name. But since they are one of the few offerings in the history of WOOT that doesn't ship to Virgina, screw (kappa) them.

...or Screw Phi Tappa Kegga!

Don Sebastiani & Sons is the maker of the super-popular orange Crusher wine which sold out quickly when it was offered on wine.woot. 500 woots in 13.5 hours.

I had to go all black market to get some from a wooter in FL. I didn't get in on it here before it was gone, but it did ship to OH whereas this current SKN offer does not?

They also had a rosé Pinot Noir wine that was sold here under the Crusher brand name. They upped the ante on that deal and sold an astonishing 704 woots over 24 hours.

Interesting note about the orange wine - a few months before it became a wine.woot overnight sensation, there was a similar offer from winemaker Darick Towbridge.

The Old World Winery Pinot Gris is a skin-contacted white, resulting in an "orange" wine. It only sold 80 woots but was offered a second time after the Crusher sales went through the roof and advertised as an "orange" wine, resulting in 177 woots sold. A nice bump from the first time out but still pales in comparison to the Crusher sales.

Regardless of what you call it, the OWW Pinot Gris is a unique and enjoyable wine. I hope to see Darick back with some more offerings from Old World Winery just as I hope to see another vintage of the Don Sebatiani & Sons orange Crusher in the near future!

In the meantime, enjoy the SKN.... those of you that can get it!

Wallet is saved by lack of shipping to Ohio.

Interesting wine though with 8% PS and half aged in stainless, something I don't really recall seeing in many reds. What's the idea behind both of these?

Also just curious what the drinking window would be on this as well as if there is any R/S?

I'm sure greg will be chiming in as he usually does.

It has been awhile since I've seen one not have Wisconsin as a shipping option.

I was excited to see this, I actually like this one quite a bit. However, it's been over a year since I ordered from wine.woot and I just noticed they're not shipping to North Carolina now? Is that only for certain wines or it is a forever thing? Sorry for the ignorance.

I poop while I Woot.

Under "Don & Sons" they put out a $14 pinot noir (on the east coast) at Whole Foods that is a big favorite in my house. Actually, half the guests rave and the other half thinks it exaggerates the florals too much. For all it's big fruity aroma, it's still dry enough, and not too hot with alcohol to distinguish itself from entry level, which is impressive at that price point.

This merlot seems like it could be a cut above party wine, and if I'm lucky could serve as summer dinner wine with big flavors like BBQ. In for a case.

Depends on if the winery can ship to the state, not woot.
It's because most states hate freedom and are in love with big shots in the booze distribution business..

Each winery has to have an individual license for each state and each state's requirements are different. In OH, there is a limit to the number of barrels produced in determining which wineries are eligible to ship here. I'm guessing that there has either been a change in the production level of DS & Sons which now disqualifies them from shipping to OH (hope not!) or else this wine is technically considered to be from a different producer than the Crusher wines which did ship to OH.

Perhaps a winery rep could enlighten us....

Given the short ship-to list, I would guess the later. This may be a sub-label or separate label/legal entity, in which a separate license is probably needed. Still not a good justification for not spending the $25 for the Ohio license.

Available to rat, etc.

Very tempted simply because of the price point. I still have a little of the Toolbox merlot left and I did enjoy that wine at a similar price. Anyone able to compare the two?

It is time for Woot to put a sticky at the top of every deal discussion page that states that the ability to ship wine to your state is dependent on the winery's certificate.

Yup. Hailing from WI also. Don Sebastiani had a license here (last Dec) but I guess they didn't renew? I purchased that Big Orange when it was up.

List of states from that 2011 sale: (* indicates not on 2012 list)

Arizona
California
Colorado
Connecticut*
District Of Columbia*
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Illinois
Iowa
Kansas*
Louisiana*
Maine*
Michigan*
Minnesota
Missouri
Nebraska*
Nevada*
New Hampshire
New Mexico
New York
North Carolina*
North Dakota
Ohio*
Oregon
South Carolina
Tennessee*
Texas
Vermont*
Virginia*
Washington
West Virginia
Wisconsin*
Wyoming

It's too bad they didn't renew -- I would probably have purchased this and the used automobile parts offer. Hopefully they get it figured out before the 2011 Orange Crusher.

Even better would be (for logged-in users) a little label next to the "I want one" button that says whether your most recent shipping address is or is not in one of the allowed states.

Of course, there might already be a label that pops up for disallowed states, but I've never seen it because apparently everybody ships to NY...

Yep it's complicated and varies by state. For Ohio we exceed the annual 250,000 gallons produced annually (104,167 cases) and can't sell on this state. Same rule applies for NJ.

We're registering in ME, MD, MI, NV, NC, TN, VA and WI so we can sell direct.

Some states like GA and LA wehere we sell through distributors we can't also sell direct through Woot.

Thanks for trying our wines - SKLN Merlot is pretty tasty - you'll be happy with it.

We love Kansas - it's that legal thing getting in the way. We produce over the amount legally allowed and thus can't sell direct to you. Sorry.

Why can't wooters just read the list of states on the "todays woot" page? That's what I do every morning when I check the days offering. It's pretty self explanitory.

I'd like to know more about the wine instead of the grippers on the shipping. Has anyone tried this? I'm tempted but there's not a lot to go on.

Thanks for the reply...perhaps that also explains why I was sure I've seen s/k/n in stores in Kansas? You can sell through a retailer via distributor but not direct?

blindly clicked buy on this and google told me I made a good decision. Second wine.woot. with the first being the Gazzi Syrah from a wootoff like 3 months ago, have 1 bottle left of that and I will be sad to see it all pour down my throat.

I'm going to have to agree, just a little winery input might have pushed me over the fence...I can almost hear crickets on this offering.
