@gardwine
Thinking of doing a wine trip to Wash State this fall...any suggestions on "must visit" vineyards and/or tasting rooms? We did Paso Robles last year and Willamette the year prior and couldn't have been happier with both. Now it's time for us to see what Washington is made of! Thanks in advance!

There is going to be perceptable sweetness with each of these wines, but there is a tartness to balance the sweetness so they should not be cloying. Think of the balance between tart and sweet in a citrus juice (though this wine will not taste like citrus).

The pH is a bit on the high side compared to most reislings so the mouthfeel may be softer than with a wine that has a pH around 3.0.

I think the pairings are good - a little sweetness really helps as a foil for spicy asian foods.

The problem with labeling wines in the US (particularly an issue with Rieslings since this noble grape has such dynamic range in the hands of the winemaker) is that there is no regulation about what constitutes "dry". In the EU, for example, the residual sugar must be below 4 g/L to be labeled dry or may be up to 9 g/L if there is suitable acid to balance it. The dry riesling here meets the EU criteria for "dry" but doe not meet the voluntary IRF criteria for "dry" due to the high pH.

Regards,

Greg

I sent an email to the Service address, but perhaps Gardwine has an answer. I was able to order wine before and have it sent to Vermont, but when trying to order the case from Gard, Vermont is not in the drop down for the states.

Is there a problem with the form, or is it something else?

Thanks!

That's a great question! There are lots of great "must visits" here in Washington. There are arguably at least 4+ major wine areas you could visit, none of which could be done in the same day. Do you know where you're planning to go? Walla Walla? Yakima Valley? Lake Chelan? Woodinville? If you email me at wine@gardvintners.com with a little more info and what type of wines you're interested in, I'd be happy to give a few suggestions.

Unfortunately, the trouble with Vermont is that, from what we know, FedEx is the only shipper allowed to ship wine there. We only use UPS, therefore had to eliminate Vermont from the list. Sorry about that!

I was under the impression that Woot uses Fed Ex for all of their shipments. Is this actually being shipped directly by the winery, not via Wine Country Connect like most orders are shipped? Is this due to being located in Washington?

Nice mixed case for the warming weather. Excellent winery and they included the Pinot Gris which is rapidly becoming my favorite white varietal. And all that for 8.75 a bottle shipped...very good deal.

Yes, Gard is doing the shipping directly from Washington on this one. FedEx isn't a viable shipping option for us unfortunately, which is why we use UPS - thus, no Vermont shipments.

We were looking at Lake Chelan actually. We like to spend at least 5 days so as to be able to visit as many places as possible. Any places come to mind that would accommodate guests at the vineyard like a bed & breakfast or guest house?

Oh no! I might not be able to re-direct to my local FedEx Office then!

I think I have similar functionality with UPS My Choice, though...

Approval given, purchase made. Dave or John, let me know if either of you would be interested in this. I'm willing to part with at least one set, maybe two if either of you were interested and didn't want to go for a full case.

Did I catch this correctly, that this will be shipped UPS and not FedEx?

Huge logistical issue for me if correct...

Here in San Diego area, a redirect can only occur after a failed delivery attempt, and then there is an $11 (iirc) charge and a drive to the distribution center that is quite some distance away, rather than the FedEx office that is on the way home, and open until 21:00, not 17:00 like UPS. I don't even get off early enough to make a UPS pickup...

I am primarily a reds drinker and haven't liked many whites in my time. I actually really enjoyed Copa Del Rey 2008 Chilean Chardonnay from 3/8/2011. Does anyone know how this compares? The chard was light, buttery, a little fruity and sweet. Thanks!!!

I don't know if you'll see many direct similarities, but I have a feeling if you liked that Chardonnay, you'll definitely like our Freyja. Also, at our tasting rooms in Woodinville & Ellensburg we get a lot of comments from "reds only" folks that they are surprised to love our Dry Riesling!

minor technical bug: when you click on "I want one!" it (rightly) says that you'll be getting 3 of each of the 4 kinds. then, after you click on the "this info is correct" button it now says you'll be getting *1* of each of the 4 kinds.

maybe someone can fix that. it did make me do a double-take.

I like Riesling. We went wine tasting in the Finger Lakes region in Oct. Looking forward to sipping and comparing yours. They sound delicious.

With the great winery participation, summer coming faster than a speeding California bullet train, awesome price, and an annoying stupid big yellow bouncy "BUY IT NOW" button, I had to do it!

PS - Congrats to Gard Vintners for what in all likelihood will be a sellout on your first wine.woot appearance!!

Your participation is an exemplary example of what makes wine.woot one of the best places to buy wine on the Internet, and how a winery can be successful selling wine on the wine.woot! Now I just hope this is going to be good wine

Using your comparison to the bullet train project I would have to refer to this as an endless spring since this is a project that will never be completed in its original scope.

Edit: I should add that in the EU the ones that fall into the IRF medium sweet category could be labeled medium dry or halbtrocken. This seems about right to me IMHO: halbtrocken usually means medium sweet (and trocken usually is medium dry, although there are some great exceptions that actually are dry.)

Browsing my daily email, I found this on sweetness and fermentation from our friend Lucas Meeker.

What? California bureaucrats can't complete a project similar to it's original scope of work? Next you'll tell me that BART will never make it around the bay! Preposterous I say!

Definitely a tongue and cheek comment, sometimes I have a very dry sense of humor. Hopefully the Gård Vintners whites aren't quite as dry, it might make me pucker up
