BODEGAS M WINES - 2008 Tempranillo - Tinto de Paso

Tempranillo is one of the classic, noble red wine varieties of the world; as important a grape variety as Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir. The wines are made in a Spanish, artisanal method using pre-fermentation maceration at cool temperatures and gentle, hand punch downs of the fermenting grapes. The newly fermented wine is then aged for 18 months in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels. A key to the Bodegas M Tempranillo is the skillful blending of Graciano into the wine. This is the Spanish sigilo (secret). And in combination with the nearly perfect conditions in Paso Robles yields a rich, densely structured wine with an incredible fruit palate.

This wine is ruby in the center with garnet edges. Aromas of red and black cherry and blueberries give way to soft cardoman and geranium petal notes. A broad, soft attack in the mouth is buoyed by great mid palate structure. Fresh plum, cherry, and dark fruit flavors are underpinned by anise and violet pastis, and linger long with a cherry pie finish!

...we previously offered the '08 on Woot; the winery offered up the last of the '06 (a few dozen cases) for us...

I opened a bottle last week, and have to say it's drinking just fine, right now. A good, dark-fruit foundation with some sweet baking spice notes. Good mouth-feel and balance.

A ñice temprañillo from Paso. Ñice price too.

All I found on the winery site was info about the '08. This offer is for the '06.

I know nothing about this winery or the wines...anyone have any experience with either?? Has anyone who bought in November tasted theirs yet??

I'm sure there is not a ton of difference, but that is 2008, while this offer is for 2006.

Tempranillo is the dominant grape in wines from Spain's Rioja region. If you've had rioja, you've had tempranillo.

I think of Tempranillo like this: If Syrah and Pinot Noir got together during their vacation in Spain and made a family of little grapes... Those little grapes would be Tempranillo.

The 2006 is the first wine we made at Bodegas M. It's still a baby at six years old. Tastes like a real Spanish red.

Did the '08 get the same barrel treatment as the '06? I notice that your blending with graciano. Proportions? Why djd you go with that pairing instead of grenache?

At under 4 years, I'd consider a '08 Spanish tempranillo (e.g., Rioja) to be too young for the dinner table :-) without decanting for a couple of hours. How is yours drinking now? What do you think the ideal drinking window is?

Tempranillo soaks it up like a sponge. Expensive to make,but the wine just loves it. '06 and '08 were made in a similar fashion: all hand punch downs with a little Graciano added.

I love wines at almost every stage of their lives. (Except maybe a young Nebbiolo.) I do agree with your idea of decanting young Tempranillos.
