As this Syrah is Mt Veeder fruit, I wonder how it compares with the Moon Mountain Syrah which is also Mt Veeder fruit? Impressions have been VERY favorable for it (Moon Mountain).

I don't think he is going to respond to the emails tonight. At least he hasn't responded to mine yet and I sent it 3 minutes after he posted the address. He'll probably have to double-check his inventory tomorrow to see how many orders he can fill.

We killed a bottle of this that we got off WTSO (sorry wine.woot....) just a couple of weeks ago

I didn't get a chance to write down specific tasting notes but i would agree w/ Mike that the 07 is young and big, but very good. It could use a little down time before cracking open, or at least decant it for a decent amount before throwing it down the hatch. We did notice that some air really helped round it out. good stuff.

I think they need to start putting out a wine Barrels of Crud! What do you think? Who's with me on this?

liverman

There are certainly a lot of positive remarks about the winemaker here {tip of the hat to Mike}.

I do note that Mike blended these wines as they were in the barrel when he assumed control of Tallulah in '09:
http://wine.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=4785809...so not a 100% Mike Drash wine.

However, I mailed Mike to see if has any of that GSM left

I am on the fence about the current offer - I'll decide after breakfast.

Regards,

Greg

Good morning to all! Looks like I shouldn't have gone to bed...my e-mail is blown up with inquiries about the GSM! Cool.

I am offering the initial offering on Wine.Woot (minus the Del Rio) @ $90/half case or full case @ $180. The woot off price was a once in a lifetime offer...Tallulah needs a new pair of shoes.

I'll respond to e-mails this morning, thanks!

Update on the GSM. I've sold out the GSM. If I responded to you by e-mail, then you are good to go, just need your particulars.

For what it is worth, I prefer the Bald Mountain over the GSM right now.

Did I mention it won the coveted Golden Glass award in San Francisco? We received the top award for sustainable growers.

Most of us have a dream of becoming a rock star, actress, or famous athlete. I would like to be mentioned in the same breath as Jamet. It is one of those wines that was an "ah ha" moment. It was the 1999 vintage. Still remember the aromas of roasted meats, bacon fat, graphite, blackberries, spice, and cassis.

I model my Syrah winemaking after theirs, very little new oak and 40 to 50% whole clusters, no fining or filtering.

Thanks for your participation Mike. I loved your Del Rio Syrah from the last offering. Could you compare/contrast that excellent wine to today's?

(Besides the "spice and bacon fat"...)

Is it broke or just fractured?

First time reply on Woot, several purchases (sorry about the length).

I knew Tallulah was going to hit today from previous posts and opened my last bottle of GSM last night in anticipation. I got to the party a little late today and missed your generous GSM offer and was waffling about purchasing the Syrah. The Del Rio Syrah was good, but the GSM was great. Also, I don't have a lot of room left in my wine fridge and my wallet is kinda picky about the wines I buy.

After watching your feedback and reading your back story, I jumped off the fence and bought the Bald Mountain for 3 reasons:

1) You honored your previous price on Woot to move the remaining GSM, which I find refreshing (savvy marketing, but ethically cool too!).

2) You're from Memphis originally-- my hometown in a previous lifetime... living in Florida now. I've always found fellow Tennesseans to be trustworthy... SO,

1) + 2) = 3) If you think the Bald Mountain is better right now than the GSM, I actually believe you.

Fence pole-vaulted. Wine purchased.

I will be enjoying the last of the GSM this afternoon with a gourmet cheeseburger in anticipation of the coming Syrah alongside grilled Rosemary Lamb Chops.

Can't wait, and thanks for the wine!

@ Mike: thx for your participation it is always refreshing when a winery/winemaker not only participates but is down to earth, honest, and approachable. Although I am not a big fan of Napa (not the wines but culture) and partial to Sonoma, I will be in on one not only b/c wife and I LOVED the MSG (yeah, Mouvedere was the higher percentage lol) but b/c of your participation. Heck, I will make it a point to visit you when i am in Sonoma next year!

Question: I noticed this Syrah was in barrels for 37 months...does this mellow out the alcohol? Please elaborate if you can as i am trying to learn.

Thanks!

The Del Rio is more linear in it's focus, more mineral qualities and red fruit. Where the Bald Mt at its best is expansive, voluminous and spicy. It is a rare site planted to the perfect clone...

I started my career in Sonoma, always have a soft spot for it...need to make Pinot Noir and move out to the Sonoma Coast, one day.

The extended barrel aging can actually lower the alcohol in a high humid environment. In a dry barrel room the opposite can happen.

Look me up the next time you are in town.

Hey, everyone, to sweeten the pot. I'll add a Magnum of the 2009 Bald Mountain Syrah for anyone who buys 9 bottles of the 2006 Bald Mt Syrah. Whose in?

These will ship separately from the woot offer directly from me at the winery.

Cheers!

Mike

Born and raised in Memphis. Left after high school in '79, went to UT Knoxville, worked in broadcasting in Chattanooga and made my way to Orlando in the early '90s. Still have a major soft spot for Tennessee though. Thanks for asking. Clay
