“In the entire world there are only a few sounds that bring joy to all but the most jaded. One is the murmur of a kitten purring. Another is the thwack of a well-pitched baseball hitting a perfectly swung bat. And the third is the pop of a cork being pulled from a bottle of wine.” —George Taber

$76 from the website. A 52% discount excluding shipping! Seems like a good deal. Anybody tried these before?

The Scheid wine club price would be $78.80, including shipping. They are sold out of the merlot, and the syrah won a gold medal. I'm in for one.

My problem is that this name - being German with the final 'd' pronounced as a 't' - sounds like "The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)". Can I really drink "The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) wine"?

I may be very, very tired, but how exactly does 49/76=.48?

Yea, I think someone failed at math there. It would be 35% or so I think... Still not bad, but definitely not half price.

In for one. Wine rack is getting a little empty.

I tried Scheid at a tasting in Monterey last year. I thought it was ok but not great. We took 2 bottles home with us (the tasting was free then). I'm not in for any more but that's just me.

This offer sounds interesting. Two questions:

1. What is the cellaring window on these? (I have quite a bit of bottle stock because of too many indulgences on WW over the last couple of months)

2. Any specific tasting notes from anyone who has tried these specific wines before? Will be greatly appreciated and help me decide whether to pull the trigger.

Thank you.

Hi Paul ... Heidi Scheid with Scheid Vineyards here. The three reds in this offer are 2007 vintage and were bottled in 2009. The Cabernet is just entering its prime drinking window and will continue to age nicely for the next 2 - 4 years. The Merlot is also hitting its prime and another 2 - 3 years is no problem. The Syrah is beautiful right now and I'm sure will still be lovely in 3 years ... but I tend to like the Syrah when the fruit is prominent and really jammy and juicy, so I'd drink this one in the next 1 - 2 years.

As for the tasting notes, you can go on our web site at www.scheidwines.com and in "Vin's Wine Shop", you can click on the full wine notes for each wine.

Hope that helps and thanks for asking!

For 17 bucks a bottle, you can't beat it! I joined the Scheid Wine Club a couple of years ago after stopping by their tasting room in Monterey. I think the wines are great value, and my friends have been impressed with the wines as well.

(And in case you're tempted to think I'm a tourist who was taken by the local wines from Ca-lee-for-ny-A, I lived in N. Cal. for 10 years, and have belonged to other wine clubs as well.)

It appears from the photo that these are twist offs. Can you confirm the type of closure? Thanks.

Hi Heidi,

This is one of the rare domestic offerings on wine.woot that doesn't ship to Ohio. Is it because Scheid produces over 250,000 gallons of wine per year?

There was a previous limit of 150,000 gallons but it was upped to 250k in 2008. If Scheid falls somewhere in between, maybe you could revisit the idea of getting a license for Ohio!

I hope this doesn't led to a cork vs screw debate. There are too many of those.

Yes, we use the Stelvin Luxe+ closure. It's a top-of-the-line screw cap that shows no visible threads on the outside so it looks elegant but has the ease and convenience (not to mention the 0% risk of cork taint) of a screw cap.

And this is the reason I love the screw CAP. However you do loose a bit of that Ohhh moment with the pop of a cork. And it is kind of hand to keep a screw cap to make crafts with later on.

Oh how we would love to be able to ship wine to Ohio! We only produce about 7,000 cases under our Scheid Vineyards label but here's the prob. Under our bonded winery permit, we make a large quantity of wine for other wineries. So even though our label is quite small, our overall wine production is large. Totally stinks, because we have lots of friends and family in Ohio (Al Scheid, founder of Scheid Vineyards, is from Bridgeport Ohio) and no way to get wine to them.

Hmmmm, screw cap craft projects. I'm sure we could think of something! Although it's not going to be a bulletin board or a trivet

I'm on the fence here, Big Cab fan, like a hardy Merlot, Syrah has me worried, is it light?

Nope, not light. Quite full-bodied as a matter of fact. It's a blend from 3 of our estate vineyards. About half is from our cooler climate vineyards in northern Monterey County. The cooler climate offers super depth and concentration ... almost "inky". The warmer estate vineyard to the south brings more liveliness and fleshy fruit. Put 'em together and voila!

This deal just serves to remind me how much I wish I could buy from wine woot.

For Schied Vineyards: is there a reason you can't ship to Maine? My understanding is that any one supplier (once licensed) may direct-ship up to 12 cases per year to a Maine resident.

Mill was first sucker, that says a bit. I see rmm shares some bottles in common I also like. Anyone else had a sip? Still need a push...

love Scheid wines - I haven't had one yet that I haven't liked! their Grenache is my favorite, the cab is lovely and the other two listed here are wonderful. you can't go wrong here. I'm wooting, glad I checked before they went away!
