And, the reviewers of those are saying the ones at Costco are very chewy, not like these.

First I apologize to not adding to the conversation of the current woot. But I just wanted to quickly say how awesome Woot really is. I was expecting a delivery of wine yesterday and instead received two. When I was told there were two boxes I thought, "That's weird, I figured they would have sent both orders in the same box as they normally do when I'm in for two or more of the same deal". When I opened the boxes I realized Woot did ship as they normally would. The other box was a correction to an error they had made on an earlier wine order of mine. I did not even realize it had been made but they fixed it anyway. Just wanted to say thanks Woot.

I wonder how these compare to the absolutely scrumptious salted caramels that Crate and Barrel carry this time of year. Those are the absolute best I have ever eaten....already bought some this year....Yummy!

I have heard great things about these caramels, so I am happy to be in for 2. Some for me, some to share for the holidays.

I love Woot, but my wallet is hurting from how often I have been loving them lately.

Please don't post anything as tempting tomorrow... maybe put some more wine up since I live in PA and can't buy any of it. (stupid PA laws)

However, if you have a Costco membership they sell these things in either 32 ounce or 48 ounce plastic containers for $10

Yes, I said you can get a similar thing at Costco for $10. For $30 up close to having three times as much chocolate

NOT THAT'S IMPORTANT!!!

That might be a regional thing. My local Costco doesn't offer these.

craiggery wrote:can someone please explain to me the deal with salt on chocolate? i seem to be seeing more of this recently and i think it's nasty but apparently it has become very popular.

i did see the little "sweet and salty" thing in the write-up but that doesn't really explain anything

I'll explain it all science-like. Your tongue has roughly five flavor receptors--sweet, bitter, savory (AKA umami), salty, and sour. Different taste buds contain different receptors. Think of flavors like the differently-shaped wooden blocks we all used to play with as children. The receptors are like the correspondingly-shaped holes that the particular blocks fit into. It just so happens that the flavor of saltiness fits into the salty receptor AND the bitter receptor.

When you add a dash of salt to anything you are cooking or making, it actually prevents the uptake of the sensation of bitterness. In this case, the taste of chocolate becomes tongue-gasmic because the salt blocks the reception of the bitter taste molecules in the first place, or at least heavily dampens it.

You will basically experience new taste sensations--try a bite of dark-ish chocolate without any salt on it. Drink a little water to clear your palate. Now try a bite of that chocolate with a grain or two of sea salt on top. Have a bland dish or are those vegetables a little too bitter? Add a dash or two of salt. The broccoli I bake in the oven with olive oil, garlic powder and sea salt flat out VANISHES at the parties I make them for--even when there are cookies and such on the same table.

The salt makes a world of difference. In fact, the side of the chocolate the salt is on (top or bottom relative to your tongue) affects the taste sensation as well--it determines what "information" hits your tongue first.

Regarding the Costco caramels in a tub for $10......
If it is a gift you are seeking...these might not make the best impression! From being tossed in a tub the caramels are likely going to be scratched and the salt will probably be resting at the bottom of your tub rather than nicely sprinkled on top of the caramels.

This 2lb box offered at this price exclusively for Woot! comes nicely layered and cupped perfect for a gift or for individual consumption...whatever you prefer

Not to mention I happen to know first hand that these are the best caramels you will ever have!

So is the caramel in these a soft, creamy like caramel or the harder, more chewy type (I'm a big fan of the latter)?

Definately not a hard caramel nor is it "runny" it falls right in between, the perfect balance!

Okay... I have not been around the WOOT world for long.. So could someone tell me what all the rave about "Balsamic" is? I'm very intrigued since so many people have mentioned it.

And after contemplating all day (and getting a dark chocolate covered caramel from a local chocolate store and realizing that this is a good deal..) I think I'm going to go for this one..

You know, I'm a big fan of chewy caramels, too, and I bought these last time wondering if I'd like them. I have to say, they are creamy, but delicious. My experience with harder caramels is that they tend to be enrobed in a lesser quality chocolate, and I could really tell this was better chocolate than most boxed, retail chocolates (RS, for example) and even better than what my local chocolatier of choice uses.

That said, if you want them a bit firmer, put a few in the fridge for 10 minutes. That's what I did. (Don't store them there.)

Now, if they would only offer dark chocolate vanilla butter creams! I checked out their web site but the shipping cost was prohibitive, especially when I can get good ones locally.

I've placed an order for these. The local ones I've tried are firmer, but the taste and quality of the chocolate and salt don't match up compared to these.

I also got these and they were super good. Anyone wondering - go for it. I cannot think of a single criticism. Caramel is perfect consistency, right amount of chocolate, salt makes it better, and one (or two) will satisfy.

Are the ones at Costco in the PDX area made by your company?

I know many of you are in the same boat I am - going other places as Christmas approaches. I sent in an email to woot to ask about shipping times, this is the response I got:

"Wine.Woot orders typically take 2-3 weeks for delivery, but it often comes sooner. We're not quite sure when it would arrive, but we'll send you a tracking number when it ships out."

In other words, kind of a crapshoot. I'll be leaving the 22nd, so fingers crossed they get here by then!

Wow, what timing. I was so sad I only ordered one box last time, and I couldn't find anything comparable locally. Yet so great was my desire for salty-sweet caramel after these made a convert out of me, that I just yesterday decided to try and make my own. It... didn't turn out so well. To put it mildly.

So thanks, wine.woot and the Candy Basket, for saving me from my mediocre, burnt caramel by delivering unto us these delicious treats!

I still have some of the great balsamic left, but I'll be hard-pressed to make these last, especially with chocoholic friends and holiday get-togethers coming up.

OK, you people have talked me into it. It's not often that a non-wine item gets such glowing praise around here, and when it does (Brandini, the caramels, and of course the balsamic) it's for mighty good reason. In for 2!
