Kent, Esoterica red, Forte ... I threw my 3 best SIWBM pitches and you hit 3 auto-buy home-runs!

I kicked myself back when I only ordered 1 set of the 2004 single varietal experiments ... I won't make that same mistake again with the fully blended product. In for 3.

Any update on MD shipping?

Eeek... two purchases, only Day 1 of gift week. However, I have dried mushrooms (after a many month wait), I have truffle butter (sent at the speed of sound), I still have a bottle of the well loved balsamic stored away, so... Wine David, how will you tempt me now?! Do your best!! I look forward to it--my AmEx does not.

In for 1. I don't have any not port in my cellar. It all left me! (pun intended).

In for two. It's port season (read: cold outside, want to be warm inside) for me, and Kent seems to make solid stuff. At under $18/0.5L shipped, it will walk all over* the $30/0.375L stuff from Portugal, no question in my mind.

I wonder from what particular distillery their barrels and/or brandy come. Sounds like it could be a fun 2nd and 3rd dimension of provenance/terroir . . .

* pun intended!

richardhod wrote:No, the quotation you posted was written by an starving pilgrim! Vintage port IS ruby port. It's the very best kind of ruby port. Both are red. The opposite of Tawny port, which is brown.

This will be a kind of ruby port, but better than the A Day of Thanksgiving (1951) you'd find in your local store. Not made with 3-5 varietals as you'd find in Portugal, but KR does know his onions. And, more to the point, his grapes too!

From the description:

This wine is a classic "vintage port" type of port (ie., not ruby).

Ruby and Tawny are both non-vintage types of port. In Portugal, only the best years are declared Vintages, from which producers will make Vintage Port. The US has no such law (AFAIK), so you could in theory make vintage port every year.

Vintage port is tricky to describe. It's not nearly as sweet (even with roughly the same residual sugar) as a Ruby, and lacks the caramel/raisin flavors of a tawny (especially while young - but young with VP is all relative. Had a 94 Warre's last night that was pretty young).

The best way I can put it is that it tastes more like dry red wine than the others types - more herbal, earthy flavors, although fruit is certainly still present.

OK, I've really been happy with several KR purchases in the past, and I'm sure this is a very nice "port". My question is: Should this be considered an after-dinner wine? If not, what would you pair it with?

This on top of the Woot Cellars offering could be 2 buys in one day after almost exactly a YEAR without (last purchase was the Corison Cab 2-pack during last year's gift week).

This might be a stupid question,(I know it shows my ignorance about port wine)but what kind of alcohol is used to "fortify" this wine? or port in general?

The whole idea of Port wine is that it grows on the mountainsides in Porto, Portugal. The grapes are sweeter than others due to receiving more sunlight all day long. You can't make port without the climate, mountains, and sunlight that they receive in Portugal. I've tasted port wines up and down the Douro River and I've tasted American "port". Pardon my language, but the American "port" is garbage compared to what you drink in Portugal.

Although if you've never had the real deal you might like American "knock-offs". To each their own.

For those new to port, here's what I (think I) know about it, as a regular port-drinker and buyer:

There are really four (common) types of port:

Ruby
Tawny
Vintage
Late-bottled vintage

Each of these types can be made with red grapes or white grapes; white port is swill (cue flame war), so the rest of this post is exclusively about red port.

All port is fortified with a neutral alcohol before formentation is complete. That leaves much more sugar unfermented (thus the sweetness) and increases the alcohol content significantly (usually to 20%). Ports are then stored, either in barrels or bottles, for at least a few years, before being (bottled if necessary and) sold.

Ruby ports are the simplest, made almost always from a blend of grapes (possibly from different years), with the goal of having a consistent flavor year after year. Ruby ports are aged in bottles (or non-wood casks), so they tend to be sweeter and syrupier than other ports. Ruby ports can be drunk immediately, or stored for a few years.

Tawny ports are the other end of the spectrum - aged in wooden casks for many years (10-40 is common), so they take on similar notes to whiskeys, and are usually not syrupy at all. Tawnys are also usually made from a blend of grapes (possibly from different years). Tawny ports can be drunk immediately, or stored for a few years.

Most people prefer rubys or tawnys, but not usually both.

Vintage ports are more like regular wine; they come from a single grape and a single year (thus "vintage"), and are stored in wooden casks for a maximum of two (or three?) years. Usually vintage ports are only "declared" and bottled when the grower/shipper expects that year to be a great one (~3 times a decade), so it is a bit of a gamble on the grower's part, but usually a good thing for the consumer. They are more like ruby ports than tawny.

Late bottled vintage (LBV) ports are like vintage ports, but they are stored in the casks for an extra year or two. They take on more whiskey-like character, but still have a little bit of the syrupy flavor associated with ruby ports.

Choosing a vintage (or LBV) port is a lot like choosing any red wine - what you get depends enormously on the region, the winery, the weather/year, the choices made by the winery, and the age of the wine. Vintage port is an entire wine class of its own, so it is hard to give advice about a particular year/label without knowing the details of the weather in that region that year, and without tasting it, and without putting some trust in the winery With that said, vintage port is almost always a great port.

P.S. - some vintage ports can (and should) be drunk immediately; some should be aged in the bottles for decades. It's hard to know without advice from the winery and/or an expert in the region and weather for that year. (Which I'm not.)

F it. I'm in. $105 today after $15 in coupons ain't too shabby, if you ask me.

By the way, both Corrado and the doc are on my s&*# list. The single varietal experiments were absolutely fantastic and I wish so badly that I had maxed out. (And I've had real Porto, as well. KR's are different, but certainly are nothing close to garbage.)

B) The triangle next to my name is purple whereas yours is white. The triangle is for participation on deals.woot with the various colors meaning the level of participation (purple being just below black which is the highest level). The second coupon code came from one of the admins on deals.woot for my participation.

OR

C) Blame Corrado.

I enjoy your wines Kent but I dont want to buy in if I cant get simple questions answered. On that note, maybe a good idea for Woot to put certain notes within the stats and write up that us Wooters seem to ask every time. Or would that take away from some of the fun?
