Anyone know much about VoIP for a small business? We're moving to a so looking into new options since there's also a large charge to move our current system, and we should save money every month. We really don't know anything about it though. Basically we just need broadband, new sip phones, and a hosting company?

Yes and no. You need to make sure the broadband you get will be enough to handle your internet needs as well as phone needs. Normal DSL will not work. I'm not sure if FiOS would either.

I believe that most of the time, you need to get a T1 line, which can range from $212 to $1200 per month.

Sometimes you can get a split T-1 line, so the cost is less.

My autistic student has changed drastically since the beginning of school. The honeymoon period is over! The great news (sarc font) is that the mom is saying that he is behaving this way because everybody is picking on him. Um, no. He's the one picking on others and making threatening comments. The father is a lawyer. I am soooo thrilled!

sounds just like my kid. Its honestly no wonder he has no friends. He's kind of an chilling zephyr to everyone but its always everyone else's fault. In this particular incident though it was the other kid. I'm willing to bet in the past they've both been guilty of it though.

Doc O, glad you are feeling better.

Bhod, sorry about the past week, both the bug in your house and all that happened with K. Good job on self restraint with the other kid.

Sanity, props to naughtiness and being productive at work and at home. I remember arriving one year in Vegas and there being a lot of snow coming down. We were staying at the Westward Ho at the time, so that dates it. Actually it was back in the mid 90s come to think of it. Barely legal. Hardeehar har.

I am in week 3 of the respiratory plague that has hit our nursing staff. Finally just down to coughing jags every other day or so. So much better than week 1. Sad that I missed 3 days of work because of this beast. Damned viri. And of course Joel is still just fine.

Cable?? I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

"For general browsing, hundreds of users are easily able to share a T1 line comfortably."

"T1 is a fully digital signal giving the same speed up and down as it is a symmetrical signal. Cable and other broadband is asymmetrical because most people do more downloading than uploading."

So basically, Yes Cable is faster downloading, but T-1's are better for using the Internet for VOIP. Otherwise you get lag. You also are limited speed-wise when there are others on the cable. Plus, if you need a static IP address (Web Server, etc.), you need a T-1 line.

The other issue is how mission critical is access to the Internet? Because a T-1 line usually has a contract associated with it, and they fix it very fast. Cable (and the phone companies) can take forever to get out to fix (unless you have a specific business contract with them that spells out service and many don't have that).

This explains it better. A little old, but most of it is still valid.

I currently have FiOS, and have around 43.5 Mbps Download but only 29 Mbps Upload speeds. No problems yet (knock on wood!), but when I had DSL, a problem took out my Internet for almost a week. Which businesses can't afford.

Uff da! Oh Sparky, how could I forget about you with all of your parental stuffs. Hopefully mom's hip will go great. And hope you get your dad thru the endoscopy deal. I was fortunate in that my mom LOVED the procedures where she got twilight meds.

True story: mom was in with one of here zillion same day things she had in her later years. I was waiting in her same day room for her to come back. All of a sudden I hear a mess of people laughing in the hallway. I go to peak at the commotion. It is my mom being wheeled back from the OR. She is singing "Side by side" and was at the "We ain't got a barrell of money" part of the song. When she saw me she said "I feel soooooo wonderful". She liked her concious sedation that one did.

Anyway, with all that is going on around here virus wise, I'm glad this is a cyber pub.

Generally not for VoIP, you would do a split T for circuit switched voice+intaarwebs. I unfortunately know nothing from the buying-as-a-customer side...

Some, but not all. It's true that you get smaller upload speeds, and that will affect any communications such as VOIP or Video Conferencing (as well as any Web Servers a business has).

And any web surfing, email, etc. by employees will affect it as well.
