Wine Woot? really? An indoor herb garden? So sad that these guys didn't actually do their job.

"Parsley, sage, marjoram, and thyme"? They're never going to get to Scarborough Fair that way.

Maybe if we grow the herbs from the kit we can use them to compare aromas with Cabernet Franc and other varietals that offer 'green' nuances...

I like to talk about wine, but I'd rather drink it.

Oooooh, I want one! Will this live longer than my wine.woot bonsais?

In all seriousness, will these grow larger than the cute little greenhouse and have to be transplanted? 'Cause that's a lot more work.

Are the seeds packaged for 2011 or 2012?

In all seriousness this could be pretty cool, it includes a really nice assortment of herbs for some great fresh dishes and salads.

Den might be the way to go for me, as I have a cat that LOVES to eat plants

I see him eating his way through the 12 days of herb heaven in one sitting

Every time I try to grow herbs inside, those little fruit flies show up. Kind of annoying and gross. Anybody know how to keep them away?

It says right in the description that they "can" be transplanted...which, if you know anything about plants, means yes, transplanting in required if you want a renewable resource.

I try not to be a Wine Woot downer, especially on the one day a week the offering is not alcohol, but you can go to almost any one-stop-shopping grocery store and buy all of this for less money. A Jiffy starter bucket with lid and a full set of soil pellets will run you about 15 bucks (a quick online search found one that has 72 pods in it for that price, or a 24 pod windowsill kit for 8 dollars), and you can buy packets of herb seeds for less than a dollar a piece.

And yes, you will have to transplant these to another vessel at some point, the size of which depends on the herb (thyme you probably wouldn't have to get anything onerous, but if you were to grow dill, you'd need something that could hold a Jack & The Beanstalk sized growth).

Oh, I have this kit. I have been planning on putting the plants in the topsy turvy strawberry thingie I got from my last Bountiful Overflowing Cornucopia Planning... I haven't done it so far. Most of the seeds need to be soaked and I've been too lazy to do that. I tried doing it without the soaking, but the seeds didn't sprout.

Yes, the little greenhouse is just for sprouting. It comes with these little peat pucks that expand when you add water. They are fine for sprouting but you have to plant them to get plants.

Yes, actually. I live in FL, fruit fly heaven, and lightly misting your herbs with a mix of water, Dawn (or other commercial dishsoap -- not the organic stuff) and cayenne pepper will keep the flies away, and it rinses right off when you want to USE the herbs. You don't use much soap or pepper. Just a couple drops of each per bottle. (And I cook this way, too. LOL.)

I don't get this one. I have the same stuff already which I use to start tomato seeds before putting them outside. This just looks like that stuff but with different seeds. What do you do with them once they're too big for the 5" roof? I guess you just stick them in pots and see if they'll continue growing.

This isn't a greenhouse though. Of course, for $20, you aren't going to get a greenhouse.

I have four cats! And Two Roombas.

I have had terrible luck with these. They got about 2 inches tall, then died. There's nothing sadder than trying to salvage herbs off of a 2 inch tall plant before it dies.

I've also heard that keeping a carnivorous plant nearby will help too. Never tried it though, most of those plants need to be watered constantly, and I have enough trouble keeping my drought-tolerant succulents alive....

A light spray of white vinegar and water also works. You can also clean the countertops with vinegar because the flies HATE it. You can find this mixture sold as "Organic Degreaser" or just make it yourself - acetic acid is vinegar...

Edited to say: I thought I saw these seeds described as organic, but now I can't find where I read it. Likely an assumption on my part, but if they are, tempting, very tempting. Something for my AeroGarden, maybe.

I believe this is the company (they have multiple subcompanies) that I bought a manual wheatgrass juicer kit and a reishi mushroom from some months ago. I left a message with a question and they got right back to me. No bad memories come to mind on the delivery process. Seemed like good peeps.

I haven't had a chance to gear up (har har) the grinder yet, I should familiarize myself with it soon, before the Apocalypse / zombie-alien invasion / tsunami / herd takedown. The reishi is tottering along despite my haphazard cultivation technique.

Just make sure you use white vinegar and not apple cider vinegar. Fruit Flies LOVE apple cider vinegar which is what I used to kill them. If you have a fruit fly problem, set out a bowl of apple cider vinegar mixed with dish soap (the organic stuff works to I have found). The vinegar will lure them in and the dish soap will kill them. Change the contents of the bowl after 24 hours and all of your flies should be gone in two days.

I'm a chef, so in all fairness I don't see how this product needs to be in wine.woot.com. This is something they should have placed in the home area. Unless you're making your own wine at home using herb infusion, then I could see the correlation. Just my 2 cents.

put 1 part liquid dish soap and 10 parts water in a spray bottle and spray your plants. The soap will dry out the fruit flies and kill them. You can also leave out a wine bottle with one inch of wine in the bottom. The flies can get in, but have trouble getting out.

If you spray, be sure to rinse plants before consuming.

They love wine too! I read that putting open wine near the plants will draw them in. I did try it, and it seems to work.

The "cute little greenhouse" is just for sprouting. It lets you put the seeds in the pellets, and grow them into a few small stalks, which you would then transplant into a window box or individual pots. I don't personally use them, since you can just throw seeds onto dirt and they will grow, but it's nice if you're doing everything all controlled like.

You will have to transfer these into larger vessels with your own potting soil after probably 3-4 weeks.

If you do get the kit, make sure to get a LARGE pot for the thyme, that grows huge. And deeper pots mean larger plants. I've found the "upsidedown" strawberry planters to be great for herbs.

I ordered this, I know that it would probably be less expensive to buy the peat pellets and the seed packages separately but its worth it to me to have the little greenhouse thing and in depth instructions.
My kitty likes to knock over and dig out my plants when they are still very small. So I figure with this if I can get them past the seedling stage since the greenhouse box is covered it will be worth it.
