I still haven't opened any from the last offer. For those who have tasted these, is there any consensus on the 2008 vs the 2007?

These are the wines you want. Just be aware that these need time to breathe if you open them. Around 10 years they can go into a dumb phase for 10 to 15 years. But they come out of it wonderfully!!


Someone shared this link last time on Decanting Syrah and Petite Sirah. And yes, they are two different varietals.

This is an absolute must-buy. An amazing wine from a wonderful winemaker and a great guy to boot.

We're as lucky to have kent as we are to have his awesome wine. If this doesn't sell out by noon I will be shocked and appalled.

I'd contribute to the sellout if my October wine purchasing wasn't completely out of hand... the 2007 got some really high marks from the tasting publications. 2008 was a great vintage for Napa, but always seems to be overshadowed by 2007. If any Boulder w.wooters want to share this please speak up!

Haven't had this vintage, but I'm sure it's as tasty as the prior editions. Looking forward to trying it well before its time and then laying the rest down for a long long sleep.

There were some of this vintage in the last wooting of Kent's Petite Sirah. (wootmonkeys, note spelling).

I have a question for "y'all". How old, or young, do you drink your PSes? I want to keep some, but I know PS tells us there's a dumb period for these. These are drinking beautifully now (well the 07s are), but Kent says they will also keep a long log time. I'm thinking of keeping a few for 20 years...

IIRC, any PS drunk before 4 or 5 years is infanticide (to PetiteSirah). Also I seem to recall Kent indicating PS can enter it's dumb phase anywhere from 10 to 15 years or so, and it can last around 10 years.

So if you open one early, it's going to need a lot of decanting to open up properly.

But PS will correct me, if I have it too early.

Seriously, as Sparky & PS have said, this is an auto-buy. I LOVE this stuff & KR is one of our favorite & regular in-house knowledge droppers. Good wine from good people!

I bought this in the previous offer (two '07 and one 08). I opened an 07 and it was very good despite my mistake of opening it in a restaurant and otherwise mishandling it. I resolved to let the other two bottles reach adolescence, and moved them down to the "patience is rewarded" section of my storage.

I drank an 08 back after the last offer, and thinking back on it, I'm pretty sure it was closed tight. I enjoyed it, but remember thinking it was very subtle. How long of a decant for these would be recommended to drink in the near term? I'm not sure I'll be able to hold them for 20 years. . .

Ordered the 07 & 08 last time around. They were FANTASTIC after a quick pass through the venturi.

I'm in for 2 this time around, although I'll definitely set most aside for later.

Kent Rasmussen's original PS on here was what got me to love a good PS.

While I typically say, "Can't wait to try it!" With this one I can and will wait.

Auto buy. I might get in trouble at home because I bought 4 bottles of KR pinot at Costco yesterday. If you live in the LA area it is at the Hawthorne Costco.

How would you describe your esoterica line of wines compared to your KR brand? Are these "non-mainstream" wines that you like to experiment/play with to see what you come up with?

Not sure if I should already know the answer to this, but am interested in your perspective.

No MD = two thumbs down...wine.woot is such a tease right now with about every other to every third being offered here.

I can't handle the pressure... just got the 2007 Jean Edwards Cellars Syrah delivery (yeah I know this one's a Petite Sirah), and SWMBO is begging for a white... O, the pull of that big gold button...

I recently opened a bottle of 2001 Concannon Vineyard Petite Sirah Reserve that had been properly cellared since it's release, and it was sublime. I was surprised how well it had aged.

I've yet to get a good definition of what a red wine is going through in this "dumb" phase???

I had to get some. It's my first purchase here - just joined. I hope it's as good as it sounds.

Time to start playing Tetris with the cellar again. Got some more bottles coming in now!

What's the consensus about opening one within the next few months (say...if you've got family stuff over the holidays)? I can let two bottles sit for years, but that third may need to get opened.

That sounds about right. My belief atm is that ideally you drink it at nine or ten years old, then until it enters dumb period (I've heard 10, 12 years, not 15 but variance might make it possible, and I'd never contradict Kent!), you then hold it til it's 20, or 25, after its (roughly) 10-12 years of dumbness. Then I presume you have another 10 or 15 years to drink it!

The earlier you open it, the more you'll need to decant, of course!
