troiani31 wrote:You are correct in that one side of the hole will be deeper than the other side and just doesn’t look right as I have looked into this before. The curve in the stave is a slight one and does not encourage the candle to burn unevenly.

The thing is, I think people are looking at a dual purpose - a candle holder and a port glass/shot holder. The angled bottoms would tend to cause your glass to tip and spill, which would be ABadThing(tm).

It just so violates my Alton Brown uni-tasker sensibilities to only use it for candles.

That said, it's nothing a hand drill and a 2-inch Forstner bit from your local hardware store can't fix.

So when the candles are lit it gets longer?

So let me get this straight. You want to drink an intoxicating beverage, all the while balancing glasses of the highly flammable liquid alongside lit candles.

Sorry, but that's entirely too wimpy if you're not on a skateboard.

Unfortunately, you do not have it straight.

One use at a time. My envisioned multi-purposing of this device is for beverages OR candles. Not both at the same time.

chardonay wrote:I am so on the fence for this. I bought the Lazy Susan Barrel Lid when it was on wine.woot and it was hideous! It was repaired with some kind of caulking and then stained, the wood slats were uneven, it was unusable. Now I look at this and think, hmmm.. kinda cool.. but what if it's just as bad as the other was. Will be just another thing I had to have and now sits in the garage, collecting dust, for my husband to swear at.

Hello:

Sorry to hear about your experience with the Lazy Susan but I wanted to let you know that I was not the manufacture of that item. I do make them but they have not been on Wine.woot as of yet.....If you end up purchasing the candle holder, I think you will be pleased with it.

Thank you and let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Geckotek wrote:I wonder if you got the same one I get in '09? I love that one except that the lined tealights I have from Ikea don't fit in the bored out holes. I haven't tried non-lined tealights as it sounds like a bad idea anyway. I rarely light it, it's serves as more of a table piece.

That being said, I bought that one as a gift and loved it so much I ended up keeping it. Thinking I'll buy 2 this time, one to keep and one to give.

Yes, that's the one I have. I only buy naked tea lights (I avoid plastic as much as possible), but they do indeed fit snugly, so I'm sure lined tea lights wouldn't fit. While having to dig out the melted wax is less-than-ideal, it's not THAT big of a deal, and I've still been very happy with my candleholder.

How dark is the wood yours is made from, may I ask? Does it have any markings like the one shown in the current offering? Mine is dark reddish wood, sort of a dark cherry/light mahogany colour, with no markings.

Please, do show us what YOU can craft out of wood that would otherwise be discarded.

If the holes were bored in a manner that allowed the votives to be placed "level" I'd buy this thing. After realizing that the votives follow the curve of the stave I'm turning away and not looking back.

I'll second (or third or fourth) that. I'd be in for one if they were level. The candles resting at an angle is an aesthetic turn-off. Makes much more sense for them to all be parallel to the surface the stave rests on.

So like...I didn't see any answer to the question mentioned earlier....*hic*

Is this ready now or will it have to age a while yet?

I have purchased one of these in a smaller size and gave it as an engagement gift to family members who share my interest in wine. It was a big hit with them and everyone else attending.

Hey, WD, seems like we're due for some sparkling wine.

Easter's near.
Mothers Day is coming up.
Graduation season is close at hand.

Something a bit special but at a great price. Perhaps something like a trio of Mumm Napa Renouveau, Brut Reserve, and the 2004 Blanc de Blanc Barrel Reserve ???

And then....Independence Day and summer party season follows....inspired by the red, white, and blue offering of a past wine.woot Independence day offer, how about an assortment of some Mumm Napa Cuvee M Red, Cuvee M (blue label), and Brut Prestige Extended Triage ??? At the right price, I could be in for 3 sets of 3 or even a case.

So just a couple suggestions for two separate offerings. Don't mean to just focus on Mumm Napa as Iron Horse, Domaine Chandon, and some other sparklers offered here have been delightful. (I think Reboot was the only one that disappointed.) Oh, yes, the various S. Anderson sparklers offered long ago (2006?) had an elegance. Gee, I'd like to see some of those again.

20 bucks for a piece of driftwood with some candles glued to it?

Pass.

I purchased 1 for us and 2 for gifts. The one thing I noticed first off is, except for the center candle, the others are not level because of the radius of the plank, so the candles are going to look oddly positioned and possibly the wax will spill out into the votives. On top of that, they're all very shallow indents, 1/16" (maybe 3/32").

The diameter of the tea light holder holes is 2". I purchased a 2" Forstner bit and deepened each by about a 1/2" and leveled each one. It's perfect now. Why the didn't they think of that or take the time to do it, I don't know. Seems pretty simple. But, I like it now. It's unique.
