Anybody have any thoughts/experience with the Longoria pinot on Lot18? The producer seems legit and w/ the voucher madness the wines come out to about $20...

It is well to remember that there are five reasons for drinking: the arrival of a friend; one's present or future thirst; the excellence of the wine; or any other reason.

A few days ago it was truly insane as one could seemingly buy an unlimited amount of the vouchers from BuyWithMe, but they've now capped it at one voucher per city. You can still accomplish the "unlimited vouchers" deal by creating multiple BuyWithMe accounts.

Thanks. I'll start signing up forthwith. I saw everybody talking about these vouchers in the old thread, but I didn't have the patience to completely follow the discussion. Better late than never!

Cinderella Wine (CW) is a subsidiary company of Wine Library. CW took woot's product-a-day scheme, like a lot of these sites have, and offers two wines per day at noon and 9 pm EST. Usually, the offers are pretty nice.

They won't give you the $25 credit until they ship her order. If you click the "Invite Friends" link at the top right, you'll get to a page that shows the history and status of your various invites. It should say she has ordered something and that they'll credit you $25 when it ships towards the bottom half of the page.

Haha. I agree with you, bud. I hate I missed out on the Juslyn cabs a few weeks back.

If you guys want to see past lot18 offers and salivate over what we all missed, you can do so from their facebook page. It appears their actual website doesn't have a link for past deals.

I'm slightly tempted on the Epiphany PS, but I burn through PS so slowly, and I already have the Esoterica PS ordered from Woot, so I'll probably hold off.

The Wine Spies has an interesting one today. It's the Hook & Ladder 2008 RRV Cab Franc single vineyard.

H&L Cab Franc $20 a bottle

If you buy six bottles and use CABSPY you get free shipping.

H&L has been making the rounds on the deal sites, but I haven't seen this wine pop up yet. I'd like to try one of these, but I'm pretty sure The Wine Spies hate us Texans and won't ship here.

In this case, I went with what I know rather than trying something new (which is what I usually do). I've never had a DeLille wine but have heard good things about them. The RY is definitely *not* a Napa-like wine in that the style is not that of a "cult cabernet." Having tasted my way through a lot of wineries in Alexander Valley I think it's a pretty good representation of the place. I wouldn't be surprised to hear someone say the same thing about the Chaleur Estate wine from DeLille either, though. I typically found an herbal/minty undertone in Alexander Valley cabs that gave the fruit a "coolness" that I haven't often experienced in wines from Napa, or elsewhere in Sonoma for that matter. Don't get me wrong, the few Scion vintages I've had the opportunity to taste (03, 04, 05) have all been loaded with fruit, but they show enough restraint and elegance that it's not just another fruit bomb.

So what would I choose? Both, if I had the money. Forced into a choice between the two, I'll take the Scion because I like the Robert Young house style and Alexander Valley cabs in general.

If you're interested in Alexander Valley, another winery to check out that focuses on cabernet that has a long history growing grapes (but a relatively short history making wine) is Hawkes.

It is well to remember that there are five reasons for drinking: the arrival of a friend; one's present or future thirst; the excellence of the wine; or any other reason.

The last CT reviewer thought this wine (2006)still had 3-5 years to go for cellaring. Do you think this could be correct?

I think I'll be hanging on to a 2004 that I have for another 3-5 years before drinking. I haven't had the 2006 yet, but if it's true to the house style and the vintage (I think 2006 cali cabs have tended to be a little more backwards and closed for business in youth than either 2005 or 2007, but there are plenty of people out there who know more about that than I...) then I would hold them for at least several years and they should last for 10 to 15. The Scion I had most recently was an 04 and I thought it had 5 or 6 years until it peaked and then maybe another 5 or 6 after that of pleasurable drinking. I just ordered a set of the Lot18 Scions and I'm going to try to keep my hands off of them for at least a year before checking in. I'm definitely planning on holding at least one for quite a long time.

One thought that just occurred to me that I don't often act on is looking at older vintages of a given wine on CT and seeing if there are any more recent reviews of them. That would give you an idea of how a wine tends to age.

Edit: I just followed my own advice. Looked over the notes going back to the 2000 vintage and all of the wines had recent notes that were indicative of wines that are long-lived. Doesn't mean the 2006 wouldn't be enjoyable now with some decanting, but it's a good sign that it'll be even more enjoyable down the road a ways. By the way, I have no financial stake in the sale of Robert Young wines, but perhaps I should submit my last few posts to them and see if I can get a marketing job there...

SAXWIZERD45, I appreciate your candor. As a guy nearing 60, I hate to think of cellaring for 5 years before I open up something I want to drink now. Also, SWMBO does not get why I keep ordering wines that we should drink years from now. New wine racks keep going up in the basement and she keeps talking SIWBM.

I think it's unlikely that they don't know what's going on, particularly after the multiple vouchers per order issue experienced a week or two ago.

My guess is that they've got a high estimate of long-term customer value (in the $1k range), and paying $500 now to acquire particularly-interested customers doesn't scare them. That or the economics of the voucher program from their perspective has elements to it that we're missing.

The CT reviews for the 2005, 2006, and 2007 sold me.

Couple caveats:

1. The winery apparently dropped the retail price on this wine starting with the 2007.

2. These look like highly-extracted, Parkerised wines.

But yeah, I still got 4 bottles for $50, shipped. I'm going to be sad when I run out credits...

When you check CT, as well as the price check option, you'll notice they refer to 375 bottles, not 750's. Yet, lot18 does not distinguish the size. So, I gotta wonder what size they are selling.

Let it be known that on this, the 1st day of March, 2011, in the year of our lord, I went in on the Fess Parker AND DeLille Syrah just to rid myself of the Lot18 Tell-Tale Credits which have been pounding a sinister beat under the floorboards of my soul. Now, with a surplus of 20+ wines overflowing from my 52 bottle capacity fridge*, I hereby put an end to this Lot18 voucher madness that has plagued me as of late. Lot18 and Wine.Woot be damned--from this day forth, a wine-buying moratorium shall be imposed, not just by myself, but by God and the heavens and the universe beyond and all the laws that govern it! Enough is enough! It's time to start drinking! That being said, it wouldn't be the end of the world if some more Truchard Tempranillo were to pop up on Woot. Hint, hint...

* - For those interested, Mr. Visani, known for embellishing his endowments, actually holds a mere 44 bottles.

A thorough search of the net for lot18 and $40, $50, $55, $60 or $80 turned up nothing valuable in the past 24 hours.

Le Sigh~

Though I kinka agree with those who are glad... so many good deals make it hard to say no. I now am down to $160 in credits plus a $60 voucher I have yet to use (Probably will couple it with an invite to get an extra $25 out of the deal)

I'll either be waiting for good words about the delille syrah or for another wine equivalent to the Justlyn/Delille cab deals.

I too am now overflowing my 28/12/12 wine fridges(Which are holding 28/15/15 so not every one lies) and with the inbound wines I will be overflowing my extra case box as well.

Too much wine, what a horific problem!

These wines look fairly well reviewed from the limited CT notes. The cheapest wine is $12.50 a bottle after this discount, so it seems worth a shot.
