Expensive spices in clear containers. I'm worried about the sunlight damaging the spices. Any thoughts?

Last time these were $40 plus shipping! This is much more reasonable at $15 off. V tempted. How long will these spices last if kept well in the average room temperature?

This can be mounted with some ingenuity, so long as you don't mind drilling into your cabinets. It is not designed for mounting, but the wire metal is very solid.

I'd also like to know an expiration date prior to buying...

What's it going to be then, eh?

This one came up in December as well.

From that thread, bruce gives a better size reference, which is something I wanted.

Each lid has a clear sticker with the name of the spice in black print. Mine have stayed on, but I'd imagine they would peel off easy enough if you wanted to repurpose a spice container you did not usually use.

Bought mine last sale, love it. Spices are labeled on top. Only complaint is they are a tad evil to refill.

The sets I purchased as gifts last year did not have an expiration date that I can remember, but spices usually last 2-3 years. They don't really "go bad," they just get weaker as they age - meaning you have to use more of them.

I bought these the last time they were offered. The spices are quite fresh and should last for a year. My girls saw it and they both tried to walk out with it. I'm thinking about getting them their own. the rack is very nice and doesn't take up much room. All the tubes are labeled on the lid so you can get just what you are looking for.

i love the set of these i bought last year. they fit perfectly in the cupboard above the stove when i slide the stand in lengthwise.

the herbs are packed pretty tightly, so you'll want to get used to tapping the plastic vial to loosen the contents before pouring to measure. that way you'll keep from dumping a stuck pile into your measuring spoons!

You can use a paper funnel. Get some parchment paper and roll it into a cone, tap the spices in and the higher sides will catch anything that might spill over. The spices shouldn't stick to the parchment either.

Do the tubes have shaker holes?

No shaker holes. You don't want air or humidity to get to your spices.

"When I said “nice rack,” I was just trying to say that your Alexander 30 Tube Spice Rack is nice! I swear!"

"(12:02 AM, today) clarkbhm wants to mount it."

Just what is in these tubes, anyhow?

nvaine

I got this in December (and I'm not pleased with the higher price I paid...) It's a very cool rack, acrylic tubes, some neat spices and blends. A friend who thinks my house is entirely too geeky really liked it. But...

The spices are not exactly fresh. They're not dead yet, but if you're looking for powerful flavor and scent you're going to be disappointed. Refilling the tubes can be a bit of a challenge.

It has no built-in mounting holes or straps, but it shouldn't be impossible to rig something up.

Much well worth the investment -- if you use them as you are wont, an expiration will not be necessary, however, if you require an expiry, it should roughly be a year from packing for the loose and ground herbs/spices, and up to two years for the whole varieties...

Yep, sunlight would bleach the spices and would probably have an effect on the flavors and odors. Don't store it in direct sunlight. The same is true if you have spices in colored bottles, since the heat would damage them.

Almost worth it just for the empty tubes.

I couldn't not go in for one. I wanted it the first 2 times I saw it, but at this price, a buck a spice when I was already low on spices, and a nice - and neat - way to store them I couldn't resist. Nothing worse than a cabinet FULL TO THE BRIM of spices to the point where you turn the lazy susan and they all fall down in the back where you can't reach!

Pass. I don't like spices in clear tubes, and I found some really great canisters at World Spice Merchants up here in Seattle that are much better at not only saving space, but storing larger amounts of spices.

Got these last time they were offered - worth the extra few bucks I paid for it. Gave it to Mom for Christmas and she loves it. The spices seem relatively fresh (Alton Brown still wouldn't approve) and the stand is moderately attractive. Good product.

Also, the "Herb Mix" is heavenly. Wish I knew what was in there.

It can age the spice prematurely, but these are small enough that if you cook regularly with them, you can use up the spice before that becomes an issue.

I have to argue on the freshness. They were OKAY, but a bit on the weak side. Of course, I like spicey foods...

Do these have round or flat bottoms? If they're round, that would be a little inconvenient, as you couldn't set them down without screwing the cap back on or putting them back in the rack.

Does anyone have a line on some nice spice mills? I have no way to grind some of these.

Bought these last year here and am thrilled with the quality of the spices. Very fresh and fragrant. The bottom are flat but cannot stand well on their own. There is approximately 1/4 worth of spice in each tube.

No dill? No marjoram? What an odd choice of "spices". Many of these are spice mixtures. I guess when I think spice rack I think of only spices with no mixes.
