The Cab has 5 years left on it, and though "improvement" is subjective, stands to gain the most with another year or two in bottle. I would drink the Merlot and the Zin within the next 2-3 years. Very briefly: I would say the Cab is more "elegant", good intensity of blackberry/cassis fruit, slightly more tart, not quite as heavy in body. Of the three wines, the Merlot is probably the most similar to the previous vintage. The Zin is bigger and a tad riper than the 2003, and has a bit more "concentration" or intensity of fruit."

(7:10 PM) SonomaBouliste replies, "Happy to do so as a fellow vegetarian. I'll have to stay general since we have no way of knowing exactly what the mystery wine will be. All these wines have good acid and enough flavor intensity to pair well with rich hearty foods, so where does that leave us vegetarians as far as sourcing umami? Eggplant Parmesan, ratatouille, grilled portabellos, lentil or bean based stews, almost anything with cheese or cheese alone, and yes, certainly most pizza and pasta."

(8/12/2008 10:41 PM) SonomaBouliste has a reply, "2002 was marked by very challenging weather during harvest, including some 100 degree + heat spikes that in some cases caused sugar levels to go through the roof before the grapes were otherwise ripe. I don't remember much about 2003 - it was right before my hip replacement and I was in considerable pain, I'm told weather was average. 2004 was a dream, a lot like 2001 - an early start and then very even weather. As far as the Merlot goes, I think it shows more consistency and similarity year to year than any of our other wines. I'd probably give a slight nod to the 2004. Even though our Merlot is a serious wine it doesn't have a history of lasting as long as one might expect."

They were VERY careful to keep us away from the "relabeling" center, which was keeping his daughter busy earning back to school clothes cash. Peter threatened to have me run over by a forklift if I got to nosy. Thanks for the great tour, Peter. Looking forward to having a go at my guess. I think I'm a leg up, having had the opportunity to try so many of your wines today to refresh my palate without having to open one of each of your varietals I have in my collection!"

I was really hoping to make it through August without a purchase. Last week was tough enough, week before just as difficult. You finally broke me. Luckily I've already wired the closing costs on the house and knew I could get this one. :-)
