And it appears they have a birthday bash/party (4th annual upcoming) in April in NYC. No date yet, but that's what they've done each year.

For you 100 percenters, I found some wines at Wine Exchange (www.winex.com) today that might help you: a 100% Corvina and a 100% Arinto, both for $9.99.

So I started tracking this recently, and I have already found two varietals that aren't on the application form without even trying - Souzão & Négrette.

Am I just not aware of other names for these grapes and they are actually listed, or am I correct to add them in? What other additional ones have folks come across?

I had to add Souzão in as well on my app. And I am suprised that Négrette isn't on the app, since it is on the DeLong's variatel listings.

But anything you aren't sure of, do a quick google search to see if it known as a different name, and add it to the list if it's not on it.

About 13 of my 100+ weren't on the list either. I totaled 104 when I sent it in.

I cross-referenced varietal names with the Wine Lover's Companion to make sure that I didn't double (or triple) count varietals that have more than one name (and yet somehow added Monastrell even though they have Grenache listed - D'oh!). If the Companion is not available to you, try the "grapes" link at www.winegeeks.com, or Wikipedia.

The list the Century Club provides on their website lumps Zinfandel and Primitivo together, yet I've seen wine labels that list them as separate grapes in a blend. I also remember some discussion here on the topic a while back, and I think the consensus then was that while they may have a shared lineage, genetic testing had proven they were different grapes.

Any thoughts? Can I list them separately on the form and take credit for 2 varietals (after I consume a recently purchased 100% Primitivo-labeled bottle)?

I'm currently at 69, although that's probably overstated since I've added 14 to the end of the list that I haven't completed due-diligence on (to make sure I'm not double-counting an alternative-named grape). For example, I just recently learned that Mourvedre = Monastrell = Mataro. I suspect that Muscat Ottonel = Orange Muscat, but I haven't confirmed it. And what the heck is Symphony (in Scott Harvey's One Last Kiss White)?

Symphony is a separate grape. have not seen it under other names. Very light white. I made some Symphony and it was great cold on the patio before dinner.

According to the Wine Lover's Companion, Orange Muscat is a separate variety of Muscat, and Muscat Ottonel (aka Muskotaly) is thought to be a cross between an unknown strain of Muscat and Chasselas.

According to this article, they (Zin and Primo) are genetic twins.

According to the wikipedia article:

Primitivo was brought to California in 1968, and ampelographers declared it identical to Zinfandel in 1972.

So they should be considered the same ....

I had a bottle of Amarone last week. When I looked it up, it is a Corvina blend, and I got three new varietals. Currently at about 95, and just got a special order bottle of Charbono to add that varietal.

Depends. I sent mine in to them in November, but it got lost, so I didn't get mine until late January. I think they usually take 2 weeks or so.

And no wooters from Ohio, but check their site out, as they have groups all over.

OK - after all the recent discussion about the Century Club here, I had to go download the app & see what my current total was (confident in the diversity of my taste and cellar...)

This is a lot harder than it sounds! I went through lists of tastings I've been to, cellartracker records, etc. and came up stuck at 65.

It appears I'm going to have to spend a lot more time in the "Misc" section of the wine shops for a while.

I hope to join you Century Wooters sometime soon - save a spot for me in the club.

We will. Also you should keep your eye out for woot gatherings. We've had a few with specific eyes out for interesting varietals.

131 and counting (and each verified as its own varietal, no repeats b/c of different regional names) after this weekend.

Still no info from them on my application. So I just sent a follow-up e-mail with a copy of the application. They really should acknowledge receipt of the message at least.
