I don't think so. The raspberry bottle looks much more slender than the other two. It is the same height, but just thinner. I think the picture does it justice.

Mead (IPA: /ˈmiːd/) is a fermented alcoholic beverage made of honey, water, and yeast. Meadhing (ˈmɛ.ðɪŋ) is the practice of brewing honey. Mead is also colloquially known as "honey wine".

Can we get some wineries in here that will ship to NJ??? My Woot Wine stash has dwindled and I would love to stock up again. Every week I get excited to see the new woot wine... then I scroll down to see no NJ on the list. I don't even mind the tediously long delivery times because they haven't been that long.

When this was in the woot-off about a year ago now (this very trio), the mead came with mulling spices and instructions. I'd imagine that was standard and will be included with this bunch. The winemaker can verify.

Warm mulled mead is very tasty, particularly on a cold winter night. Not that we've been having many of those lately on the east coast.

hl, I'm pretty sure that this is available at Total Wine and I know it's at the PA state stores. Stay here in the forums and read what labrats and the winemaker have to say. If it's agreeable, get thee to ye local wine shoppe and buy it there. Come back and tell us that you've done so.

That's what they call a "soft sale." It doesn't add to wine.woot's bottom line directly, but it does let the winemaker know that being here affects product sales positively and his/her participation is just as important as the offering itself.

Bought this during a woot-off, I think. Still have one of the meads and one of the raspberries. I'm afraid of the raspberry one. I've had terrible luck with fruit wines before.

Anyway, on to the Mead. Doing this completely from memory. I'll say it's interesting. It is not a fine wine by any stretch, and I suppose it is quite sweet, but here's the important part: if you know what a sweet wine tastes like (think a syrupy riesling) your mind will attribute the sweetness to the wine, and the flavor of the honey will come through, but oddly won't taste sweet. I remember two flavors: sweet (okay) wine, and non-sweet honey. It's interesting, and well worth a shot if you find it somewhere. If it's cheaper to pick up a single bottle locally than buy this woot, go that way. But as far as experience goes, I'm glad I tried the mead, though I suppose I'm not a huge fan.

Of course, I'm no expert, either at tasting or remembering, so this could be so far off the mark it's a euro (monetary humor!).

But trying things is half the enjoyment of wine, I suppose. I'd rather have 60 different wines with 75% of them being not-good, than 60 identical wines that are good.

I loved the Raspberry and would've bought this if it came with 2 Raspberry, 1 Mead. I didn't find it too syrupy sweet, actually rather lighter then I thought it would be.

I drank one of the bottles of Mead warm, mulled with the spices they sent and it was wonderful, so much so I wish I had done this with the first bottle too.

Not gonna lie but I saw this and had a flashback to my shower...

One of my co-workers got my wife and I a nice set of glasses and then gave us the proverbial wine bag. I was thinking "Wow how good has this got to be!"

To my amazement, it was a bottle of Apple Wine from Amish Country down south. I have never tasted anything more repulsive in my life....

Keep the apples in cider and my Thanksgiving Pie - not fermented and in a bottle!

Dare I say the same about the raspberries?

Respectfully..... I'm out for the week.

I can always hope that next week WD has a great offering for my 34th this Friday.

thatguy314 wrote:Barley wine is for the most part a completely different beast. It's really just a very strong beer that uses champaign yeast to get to a higher alcohol content.

From what I know a lot of dryer meads use champaign yeast, and barleywine is achieved by taking a high gravity beer that has been partially fermented and as the beer yeast starts to die you toss in some champaign yeast which are less tolerant of starting gravity but have a higher alcohol tolerance.

I've never thought of barley wines being sweet as a rule (in fact I'd say a well balanced one often isn't particularly sweet--you balance the sugars you put in with the amount of alcohol you expect to produce), but they have a dry, sour, "grapey" flavor that I often associate with champaign often dry champaign) though many tend to have some residual sweetness...

That's a version of a Barleywine, but it doesn't have to be so. I just bottled mine lat night (hit around 11%). OG was around 1.100. The recipe I used called for a normal ale yeast and it actually did a great job, fermenting down to a FG of 1.026 (expected was 1.024 - 1.036). There's no real 'sweet' to it, but the fact that there is some unfermentable sugars left behind with the high alcohol does balance nicely against the very hoppy character.

The reality of any sweet carbonated beverage is that someone's done some mucking around with the process. A mead WANTS to be dry (as does a hard cider). Sweetening is accomplished by killing off the live yeast cells and then either adding sugars directly or by diluting with unfermented juices (i.e. off-dry/sweet hard ciders).

The best meads & ciders I've had have been more like an Extra Dry sparkling wine and less like a Fresca.

So glad to hear someone else feels this way. When NC got high grav beer, I thought most of it tasted like liquid sugar coated donkey butt. You can simply tell when a brewer (I'm sure meaders can fall into this category too) is trying too hard to force alcohol production in a high tolerance yeast, and fails. The residual sugars coupled with the high gravity makes for, imho, a product that exists simply to get people messed up, instead of taking advantage of the specific flavour characteristics. My experience with this is almost solely beers and ciders. I feel I know the brewer is doing this when the beer name is something along the lines of "6 Feet Under Ale" or "Have One And Drive Stout." These names are fictitious, but you get the idea...

To: Loweel and other interested Mead fans

CHAUCER'S MEAD is produced with a 10.5% alcohol level. Hence, it is meant to be consumed within one year of purchase. If the alcohol level was higher, we would expect it to keep it fresh honey flavors for longer.

Yes, it is from a different batch from the last offering. We hope you will enjoy this bottling. One thing that Mead lovers will note is that as the wine ages the fresh honey flavor becomes more of a bready, yeasty profile. Some may enjoy that flavor sensation, some may not.
