Derby #10: City Without Words

Ah, the city. It started with the Mesopotamians and never looked back. Now most humans live in a world of stoplights and sidewalks, of storefronts and garbage trucks, cheek-by-jowl with millions of their closest friends. Not even the seductive quietude of suburbia could manage to kill off the city ideal - urbanity is hotter than ever and it's not going away. This week we're looking for designs that celebrate and criticize city living, that point out the striking or poignant or funny details in the urban environment, and that deal with subject matter unique to the city. Please don't try submitting a picture of a pizza or a pair of socks on the grounds that people in cities eat pizza and wear socks. Off-topic: a tree. On-topic: a tree growing through a sidewalk. Get the idea? Also, we will reject any re-submission from a past Derby unless significant changes have been made to it. And one more limitation: no words, or letters, or text of any kind. Let's try walking without crutches this time.

What about a manhole cover? Some of those can be pretty unique and intricate.

Ms. Girl, I see someone already did a manhole cover. Pretty clever, too.

Sigh.

Gee, it has been awhile. Ace use to be the keeper of the photos with PWA. Over time I've seen most of the misfits.
Wow, it really has been awhile....you newer guys don't even know who was who!

In the beginning I would ask for one picture a week. That was all I could handle.
Now I've met 3 people.

Didn't we have a dodgeball of what do you think the wooters look like?

Yeah, I have an image of you based on age and fireman. A firehouse in Brooklyn put my second floor on. From that I have decided all firemen are crazy and way stronger than they look!
I confirmed that they are all crazy when my brother in law and his best friend fell off my roof.
Maybe 20 something feet to the ground.
I saw the bodies fall past my window.
They thought it was funny! Who the heck thinks falling off a roof is funny????

The only thing my b i l told me before they showed up was.....NO Beer!
Offer coffee, food, anything except beer!

Yeah, I sort of think I would know Poof if I saw her. I bet she doesn't look anything like that.
It took hours to get use to KT. She sent a photo (which didn't show her face) with long curly hair. The person who showed up had short blond hair!
It was KT, she wiped out a napkin and started a graph of who is who and who might be someone else (this was back in the Toon- has -it- out- for- me- I- need- another- identity phase)

It took a long time, but thinking about it , I don't worry about what people look like anymore. But this is 2 years later!

WE LURV YOU TOO! Dork!!!

I just got a jury duty notice. Now I have to tell mom she needs to change a Dr appt. Not that she has anything wrong.
It is call in jury duty. If I make her change it, I won't have to go in at all.
If she leaves it, I'll get called in for sure!

Thanks for the votes and kind words, Dr. J and Mr. Zero. I couldn't think of anything good this contest, so in desperation I drew what they talked about in the theme announcement.

I thought of an idea over the weekend, but I couldn't figure out how to render it without it getting too complicated. I sketched a layout on paper and Mrs. 1 didn't like it. It was a down-the-street scene, shows a couple of bars, with a couple of guys being thrown out the (ground-story) windows. In the foreground would be a yellow caution traffic sign showing the same thing. Title: "CAUTION: Defenestration Zone."

window removal zone? opening removal zone? hmm. I can see her reservations.

I had a beautiful idea without enough time to make it- I found a picture of Mesa Verde from 1879, when it was first discovered and before it had been trashed, and the image is out of copyright because the guy died so long ago. I worked a lot on drawing the buildings in 4 colors, I think. It is still not finished, but could end up a thing of beauty. Its now too late to enter without it being a loss, and I'm going to save it for a future entry somewhere. I have also been working on a halloween entry, but also not finished.

here's a peek, though:

Perhaps a man and a woman, dressed in tux and wedding dress both talking on the cell phone, or something of that like.

Still single, can't imagine why.

Do you think it loses its 'pop' with light blue?

edit: I need to use a shirt color I can use for a color that's part of the design- so I can add yellow and a tennis ball to the treat kittie.
